Midterm elections are held on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November. 

In the months leading up to the midterm elections, some states hold primaries to sift candidates so that there is just one person from each party running on election day.

About 60 percent of the voting population vote in a presidential election and 40 percent do so in a midterm election.
