Say Out Loud: I Didn't Say She Stole The Book
Sometimes just putting the emphasis on a different word transforms the whole meaning of a statement.
I didn’t say she stole the book.
- With the emphasis on “I”. It wasn’t me who said it.
- Now put the stress on, “didn’t.” I never made that remark.
- Now put the emphasis on “say.” She might have, but I didn't open my mouth.
- The focus on the word she makes it clear that the listener only misunderstood who you were accusing.
- Focussing on “stole,” I didn’t say she stole the book. She may have borrowed it.
- Focussing on " the book", it could have been something else.
