Gates of Hell - Turkmenistan

The Gates of Hell, also known as the Darvaza gas crater, is a surreal and otherworldly natural wonder located in Turkmenistan's Karakum Desert

The story of the Gates of Hell begins in 1971, when Soviet geologists were drilling for gas in the Karakum Desert. During the drilling process, the ground collapsed, creating a massive crater that released a large amount of natural gas. In order to prevent the spread of the gas, the scientists decided to set it on fire, hoping that it would burn off in a few days. More than 50 years later, it continues to burn, creating a fiery and mesmerizing spectacle.
