Our species has made homes in all sorts of areas of the world. Whether it’s the freezing arctic or the arid outback, people are just about everywhere. How did we get so good at surviving? Our capacity to develop culture, which we can thank our evolution for.

Lesson 3:  Our Ability To Evolve And Create Cultures

Looking at culture from the lens of human development, it’s simply the information that people pass to each other that influences behavior. Through natural selection, we have genes that allow us to develop societies.

One example of this is the length of our lives, which gives us enough opportunities to pass information to the next generation. The need we have to conform and mimic one another is another development that helps us perpetuate important survival mechanisms.

Even ideas themselves go through a sort of natural selection. We only pass down the best solutions that keep us the healthiest and happiest. Like genetic mutations and survival of the fittest, the weaker habits get left behind in favor of more useful ones.

Who would I recommend the Blueprint to?

Although this is fascinating, it doesn’t identify the reason why civilization is so vital. Think about Europeans who ventured out into the world throughout history. The dangers of not knowing the environment could easily get them killed. If they instead looked to the local cultures for information about how to survive, on the other hand, they could make it even in harsh conditions.

There is evidence that friendship is common across almost all societies. And most of these cultures even see it in the same light of trust, mutual aid, and affection. We also often see individuals being vulnerable in front of their peers. I’ve got a friend that teases me, for example, but I know that he means well.

It’s pretty obvious that everyone in the world considers kissing a regular occurrence between romantic partners, right? This is what the author thought, but what he discovered after looking into it surprised him.  In Mozambique, Africa, the Tsonga people don’t kiss. They think it’s strange that two people would share saliva and germs. An oddity like this raises the question, what characteristics are common in sexual relationships for every culture? Unsurprisingly, the answer is <a href="http://fourminutebooks.com/all-about-love-summary/">love </a>.

Scientifically, we can define love as the deep emotional connection between partners that surpass sexual desires.
