  • In the 19th century, the outdoor picnic spread to the United States but remained an innocent pursuit of the middle classes.
  • Outdoor picnics were less well received elsewhere. In France, the legacy of the revolutionary egalitarianism opened the indoor picnic up to lower classes. By the mid- 19th century, even members of the working classes were starting to adopt the practice.
  • When outdoor picnics eventually gained traction in France, they were regarded with suspicion. They were not seen as innocent and wholesome, but as decadent and wicked.
