  • Prisoners in a Cave: Imagine people chained in a dark cave, only able to see shadows on the wall. These shadows are all they know.
  • Shadows as Particulars: The shadows represent the imperfect copies in our world.
  • Outside the Cave: If a prisoner is freed and sees the outside world, he sees the real objects and the sun. This represents the Forms, especially the Form of the Good (the sun).
