From Billions to Millions

Despite today's large population of 8 billion, over half of all humans who ever lived (about 60 billion) did so before 100 CE. This counterintuitive fact is explained by historically high birth rates coupled with extremely high infant and child mortality rates, resulting in smaller but more frequently replaced populations.
