Activity:

  •  Read the complete paper. 
  • Ignore details such as proofs or equations. 
  • Take some notes at the margins of the paper and write down the key points.
  • Look at any type of illustration in the paper like tables and figures and see if you can spot any mistakes or discrepancies.

At the end of the second pass it can happen that you still don’t understand what you’ve just read. Maybe this is not your field of expertise or you are lacking background information. Write down what you didn't get and fill the knowledge gap later.

1: Create a Study Matrix

Use this Study Matrix tool to help you fight the vagueness in your mind about what to do first. 

In the A box write all the topics that you're unfamiliar with ( The ones you'll want to focus first).

In the B box write down the topics you know but that do need revision.

In the C box write the topics that you know pretty well.

You can use the D box for random notes ( Tips, exams etc.)

1. Identify the subject. Write down everything you know about the topic. Each time you run into new sources of information, add them to the note.

2. Teach it to a child. Write plain and simple so even a child can understand what you're talking about.

3. Identify your knowledge gaps.  What are you missing? What don’t you know? 

4. Organize + simplify + Tell a story. Piece together your notes and begin to spin a tale using concise and simple explanations.
