Elon has always dreamed big. Plus, he eventually achieved many dreams people claimed he never could. From throwing massive parties to pay his way through his education at the University of Pennsylvania, to plans to create one of the first online banks. Elon has always been an innovator.

Elon Musk: An Introduction

Elon Musk’s motivations do not lie with money. He cares for humanity more than he cares about money.
<ul>
<li>These characteristics have allowed Elon to create two separate sustainable technology companies, Tesla Motors and SolarCity, that are each worth billions of dollars. Sustainability is a highly competitive industry, and without Elon’s internal drive, he probably would have failed.</li>
<li>He also has more elaborate plans for saving humanity. He states that his main goal in life is to save the human race. He wants to provide people with the opportunity to relocate to Mars before Earth is destroyed by climate change and asteroids.</li>
</ul>

Driven by the Idea of Saving Humanity

Elon Musk does not let worries consume him but instead uses them as motivation to get things done. However, this motivation can sometimes be overwhelming.
<ul>
<li>He has also become well known for setting unrealistic goals for his companies and unrealistic expectations of his employees. Subsequently, several previous employees have provided examples of the unbearable workloads and his verbal abuse.</li>
<li>Despite this, he is still respected by his employees. His clear sense of mission helps motivate them to follow his lead. They see he is successful in almost all his pursuits. He also demands unrealistic expectations of himself.</li>

Paranoid-Like Focus

<li>Growing up in South Africa, Elon had very few friends.</li>
<li>After his parents separated, Elon decided to live with his father. However, this decision led to a problematic young life for Elon. The Musk family has been unwilling to elaborate on how he behaved. Still, they are willing to describe him as an unpleasant man to be around.</li>
<li>As well to a difficult life at home, Elon was also bullied by his classmates because he was more intelligent than most of them. On some occasions, Elon would receive such a severe beating from the bullies that he couldn’t attend school for a week.</li>
</ul>

A Difficult Childhood

<ul>
<li>To escape from his complicated relationship with his father and the turmoils of school, Elon retreated into reading and studying. </li>
<li>Elon had the remarkable ability to memorize information photographically. Hence, he was able to read two encyclopedias and remember everything. </li>
<li>However, out of all books, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy was the one that had the most significant impact on him. Specifically, the book taught him that answering a question is easy, but asking the right question is much more challenging.</li>

Saved By Books

This ethos of looking to ask the right questions led to Elon Musk considering how he could expand and improve human civilization from a young age.
For example, by high school, he already had strong opinions on solar power, moving to other planets, paperless banking, and space rockets. On top of this, during this time, Elon started to learn more about entrepreneurship. He created his own video game, Blastar, which he sold for $500 when he was just 12 years old.

Asking The Right Questions

<li>In the 1980s, when Elon Musk was reaching college age, military service was mandatory in South Africa. However, Elon had no interest in the military. So, he decided to leave the country.</li>
<li>The US was his dream destination, but he instead opted for Canada as a starting point.</li>
<li>Elon’s first year in Canada did not go exactly to plan. He struggled for money, as he drifted between odd jobs, and he struggled to find a real home. Instead, he was moving from relative to relative for short periods at a time.</li>
</ul>

The 80s: South Africa To Canada

Elon created his first company in 1995, straight out of college. He and his brother founded the Global Link Information Network. This company would later be renamed Zip2.
<ul>
<li>The USP of this company was that they guided businesses that are struggling to understand how to set up and use the internet. Although this idea would eventually make Elon and his brother millions of dollars, they were not immediately successful. As the internet was a completely new concept, several businesses did not yet understand the value of putting their business online.</li>
<li>Elon and his brother struggled to gain traction with their new startup until a venture capital firm was impressed by Elon’s energy and drive. Mohr Davidow Ventures decided to invest in the start-up after meeting Elon. They hired Rich Sorkin as CEO of the company, moving Elon further down the business.</li>
</ul>

Musk’s First Start-Up

<li>Zip2 saw a considerable growth opportunity when, in February 1999, PC-maker Compaq Computer offered $307 million in cash for the company. </li>
<li>Elon did not even have to think about selling his share. He already had several other projects in mind, and this money would help make those dreams a reality. Instead of sitting on the sidelines, Elon wanted to become a CEO who was heavily involved in the company’s decision making.</li>
</ul>

The Compaq Takeover

<ul>
<li>After selling Zip2, Elon Musk had started to develop a strong reputation. Hence, he was able to partner with Barclays for his next business venture, X.com. At this time, people were still very wary of the internet. People were not even willing to buy books online, as they worried about using their bank details on the internet.</li>
<li>However, Elon opened one of the first online banks, X.com, and managed to increase people’s confidence in online banking through his innovative approach.</li>
<li>X.com’s executives asked the company board if they could demote Musk as CEO. The executives succeeded, and Musk became an advisor. </li>
<li>In July 2002, the company was sold to eBay for $1.5 billion. From this, Musk received $250 million. </li>
</ul>

Elon Musk has always had a passion for space travel. Just before PayPal was sold, Elon moved from near Silicon Valley to Los Angeles. He was fed up with Silicon Valley and wanted a new adventure.
This adventure was space travel. He moved just around the corner from the US space industry hub, where they were considering the possibility of putting life on Mars. To investigate this possibility, the Mars Society was sending mice into orbit. Although Elon was interested in this idea, he believed they could go one step further. He preferred the idea of just sending the mice straight to Mars.

Investigating Life on Mars

Before Tesla, electric cars were available but were not mainstream. Wealthy individuals would always opt for a Jaguar or Ferrari over buying an electric car. However, Tesla changed the game. They provided powerful and stylish electric cars. Elon Musk made electric cars cool.
Tesla had slow growth at first but has now become one of the world’s most successful companies. Tesla’s Model S is the most influential of Tesla’s cars, with its release in 2012 changing the way we interact with cars.

Tesla Inspired an Electric Car Future

Elon Musk unveiled the Hyperloop in 2013. The Hyperloop is a large scale pneumatic tube. These are the same tubes used to send mail around offices. However, Elon has taken this idea and applied it on a grand scale. Large versions of these tubes will be used to transport people and their cars within pods.
The innovative approach that Hyperloop adopts allows the pods to travel as fast as 800 miles per hour. If adopted on a large scale, people will travel from LA to San Francisco in just 30 minutes.

The Premise: Pitching a startup idea or a company to investors using the Pitch Deck.One slide, in particular, is given the same feedback by a venture capitalist across a bunch of founders: Competition.Why competitor slides are often less than ideal is because founders are experts of their companies and users (or at least they should be), but often are not experts in their competitors. But they spend the same amount of time structuring this slide as every other slide.

The Problem With A Slide In The Pitch Deck

The headline of the competitor slide is how your company has meaningful, defendable differentiation. We sometimes call this the moat, which needs to follow at least three principles:<ul><li>Prove that your company has defendable differences from competitors.</li><li>Prove why these are THE differentiators that’ll make your company a winner.</li><li>Prove you are accurately portraying the information above.</li></ul>

The Ideal Competitor Slide

The first principle is easy. You need to provide how your company is different from everyone else. Most companies can get this far. This comes primarily in a mix of two flavours:(1) How our solution is different (unique insight) or (2) How our execution is different (<a href="https://www.ycombinator.com/library/6e-how-to-evaluate-startup-ideas">unfair advantage</a>).Recommendation: Go beyond the easy step.

The First Principle

<ul><li>Founders lose credibility because they purposely or inadvertently downplay their competitors.</li><li>Spend the time thinking deeply about your unique insights and unfair advantages. It’s very possible you don’t have it. This step will not only help you raise, but also increase your chances of building a successful startup.</li><li>Think and communicate in terms of trade-offs. Your competitors are not dumb. Why did they choose one model over another? What are the trade-offs? And why did you choose this trade-off that positions you to win. It needs to relate back to your core messages.</li></ul>

Advice To Follow

<ul><li>Founders "straw-man" competitors, replacing the product of competitors with more convenient ones from which to differentiate.</li><li>Excluding real competitors, and only share competitors that are easy to differentiate.</li><li>This happens when they are living in denial, and even claim that they don't have any competitors, which is always an illusion.</li></ul>

The Most Common Problem Slide in Your Pitch Deck

If you're chasing the startup dragon, one of the most important decisions to make will be choosing the right co-founder(s). Here are some extremely valuable lessons that I wish I would've known years ago: Co-founder dating and finding success by partnering with the right people.

Co-Founder Dating

<ul><li>Increase awareness and attract more potential co-founders.</li><li>Reach out to your existing network.</li><li>LinkedIn, former colleagues, existing advisors, etc.</li><li>Join related communities - the more niche the better - and engage with people.</li><li>Explore accelerator, incubator, and startup programs.</li><li>Consideration.</li></ul>

Awareness

<ul><li>Open up your DMs and prep your calendars.</li><li>The main goal of this phase is to get a feel for each other and to ensure that you're aligned on what I refer to as hard constraints.</li><li>A hard constraint is a factor which is a must-have for you to work together.</li><li>Soft constraints are factors which are nice to have but not deal breakers.</li></ul>

Consideration

Only want to partner with co-founders who have a strong intrinsic motivation to work on the same problem, space, and target audience. Ask the following questions:<ul><li>How much equity are you both expecting?</li><li>Are you looking to raise VC or bootstrap? </li><li>What's your timeline? What are your expectations on full-time vs part-time? </li><li>Are you open to joining an accelerator / incubator? </li><li>What type of company do you want to build in 5 years?</li><li>Would this person make a great employee or an advisor or co-founder, etc.?</li><li>Does this person have a solid understanding of how the game works?</li></ul>

Alignment: Vision And Expectations

<ul><li>You need to trust this person to have your back no matter what.</li><li>Would I be excited to hang out with this person outside of work?</li><li>Does this person have an ego? Is this person genuinely interested in getting to know you? Is there a conflict of interest?</li></ul>

Vibe, Trust, and Culture Fit

<ul><li>Soft constraints that are not deal-breakers.</li><li>complementary skillsets.</li><li>good background on paper.</li><li>solid network access to funding.</li><li>geographical location.</li></ul>Don’t deviate too far from these broad strokes.Remember that joining hands as co-founders is an important decision.

Nice To Have In The Deal

<ul><li>Put together and share some initial thoughts & research ahead of time.</li><li>Immediately stand out from any other networking meetings they're having.</li><li>Set the tone upfront that you know what you're talking about, that you care about this space, and that you value their time.</li></ul>

Pro Tips

The main goal of this phase is to get a feel for how well you work together in practice, what your respective roles might end up being, and whether you like spending time with this person.Scoping out a few time-boxed project ideas will give you a sense of the other person's proactiveness. You can ask yourself:Is this person proactive or are you leading the way?

Collaboration

<ul><li>The final stage of the co-founder dating process is actually joining together as partners.</li><li>You make a commitment to building a company together.</li></ul>Are you confident that you can trust them to have your back when nobody else does?If you can answer this question in the positive then you can take a leap of faith and make a go of things together.

Your new colleagues will view you as someone who knows nothing about the business. Spend time learning about the company and its culture.Find out: How does the company make revenue? What products does it sell? How do the products work? What are the quarterly and yearly goals? What metrics are used to measure the company’s success and substantiate its growth? Where is the company headed in the next three to five years?

2. Dig deep into the business.

While building relationships and learning about the company, also ask questions about how others perceive your job to understand their expectations of you, your role, and your overall function.Often, in a Company every one of your stakeholders have a different expectation of your role, and one leader had no idea how he viewed your role or how you could use your skills to bring value to his organization.You would have to spend time aligning everyone on what your role is and isn’t so you could meet their expectations.

3. Understand how others perceive your job.

Understand dependencies and cross-functional workflows to determine who needs something from you and what you depend on to be able to provide it.Who are you providing work output to, and how do your cross-functional stakeholders use it?Ask your manager who are the top 10 cross-functional people your team interacts with.Then, spend time understanding how they view the workflows between the functions and what they need from your role to be successful. Understand the timing of workflows so you can meet deadlines and provide the most value with your work.

4. Learn dependencies.

People take jobs and want to feel connected instantly, but that doesn’t always happen. It’s hard to onboard in any new company and can be even harder to onboard remotely.Give yourself grace to move through the <a href="https://www.ekrfoundation.org/5-stages-of-grief/change-curve/">Kübler-Ross change curve </a>— at first you’ll be excited, then shocked at what may be different or harder in the new job, and then in denial that it’s that different, which can quickly turn into frustration.Each person moves through the curve at a different pace, so be patient, breathe, and try to find one person to connect with if you’re not already paired with a mentor.

5. Give yourself time.

The best way to work through all of these steps is to listen more than you speak and phrase every thought in the form of a question. For example, if you’re in a meeting and you have a great idea, you could say, “I think we should do this.”Instead, phrase your input in the form of a question, like, “I’m curious, have we tried to do this?” If you’re wrong because it failed in the past, you’ll be educated on history and viewed as someone trying to learn. If it has never been tried before and could work, your curiosity makes you a hero.

In the age of rapidly accelerating companies based on competition, your potential top talent could be coming out of the local universities. Choose an ecosystem that is graduating a diverse talent base that is critical to your company’s success. Recruit some of this talent as paid interns and recruit them to be your future employees.

Education

Every entrepreneurial ecosystem needs investors. Study a potential region and look at the numbers such as capital invested, diversity of investments and overall growth trendline. Also, look to the type of investor that may be specializing in an area that your startup is heading.

Investors

Not a lot of founders look at this metric but again it could be critical to your startup’s ultimate success. If you are raising capital, you might need a burn rate or runway to attain your overall objectives. While you may want to be in Silicon Valley, all of the right ecosystem resources might be in Salt Lake City where the cost of living is lower and the potential burn rate is much longer.

When you start a company and want to do really well, you need to work super-hard.
Working hard means working every waking hour. If someone else is working 50 hours and you're working a hundred, you'll get twice as much done in the course of a year.

Work really hard

Your product or service has to be really great. Unless it's an untapped market, your product or service needs to be much better than your competitors.
It can't be a little bit better; it has to be a lot better. Consumers will always buy the trusted brand - unless there is a huge difference.

Ensure whatever you're doing is a great product or service

If you're creating a company of it you're joining a company, it is vital to attract great people. 
So, either join an amazing group that you respect or if you're building a company, gather great people. The success of the company will depend on how talented and hardworking that group is and the degree to which they are focused cohesively in a good direction.

Attract great people

Many companies spend money on things that don't really make the product better, For example, Tesla never spent money on advertising but instead puts all the money into R&D and manufacturing and design.
Consider if your efforts are resulting in a better product or service. If not, stop those efforts.

Focus on signal over noise

As you get older, your obligations increase. Once you have a family, you start taking risks not just for yourself but for your family as well. Then it gets much harder to do things that might not work out.
Now is the time to take risks. Do something bold. You won't regret it.

The startup organisation is one of the greatest ways to make the world a better place. You can unlock human potential if you organise a group of people in a startup with the right equity incentive. Yet, many startups still don't succeed because they lack the right timing.

The startup

<ol><li>Timing accounted for 42 percent of the difference between success and failure.</li><li>Team and execution came second</li><li>The uniqueness of the idea came third.</li><li>The business model and funding are the least important. If you're underfunded at first but then gain traction, is very easy to get intense funding.</li></ol>

Timing is the most important

<ol><li>The idea. However, the idea is not everything. </li><li>The team and execution. Mike Tyson once said, "Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face." Much about a team's execution is the ability to adapt and to get punched in the face by the customer.</li><li>The business model.</li><li>Funding. Some companies with intense funding don't succeed.</li><li>Timing. The idea is too early, and the world is not ready for it.</li></ol>

Factors that  contribute to start-up success

Aside from a good business model, a good idea and excellent execution, timing determines if a company succeeds or fails.<ul><li>Airbnb. People thought that no one would rent out a space in their home to a stranger. But the company came out during the recession when people needed extra money.</li><li>Z.com (1999-2003) was an online entertainment company with a great idea. But broadband penetration was too low, and it was too hard to watch video content online.  In 2005,  Adobe Flash solved the codec problem, and broadband penetration reached 50 % in America, perfect for YouTube to start and become a success.</li></ul>

When we think of tech, we often think of cities. When we think of the countryside,  it's a place that's lacking tech and digital media literacy. <ul><li>Yet there are places like the pearl-producing towns of Zhejiang and places in rural Indiana, where online pearl parties flourish.</li><li>Rural families manufacture for online lifestyle brands in the US.</li><li>Influencers in rural China make live stream videos of themselves eating chilli peppers, picking tea or hunting bamboo rats.</li><li>There are pockets of e-commerce that are sourced from rural manufacturers in China, made by families. </li></ul>

We see the rural as backward

On a larger scale, rural areas are connected through global market forces. For example, soybeans grown in Brazil are shipped to industrial hog farms in southern China. Alibaba, the internet giant, is partnering with farms to use AI and computer vision to create highly optimized pigs to scale up pork production.

Larger scale innovation

Large farms see their work as inputs, outputs, land value and land ownership. Small farmers frame their work as one of ecology and stewardship. Their land is a place of relations. The tech that we imagine to be solutions, such as online coding classes for farmers or factory work in cities, are framed as one-way relationships, with tech supposedly benefiting rural areas. But when we see things like AI farming pigs at scale or small farmers turning their land into pearl ponds, it is not because tech found a solution. It is because small farmers can't compete on a global scale.

What happens when tech and the countryside intersect

Much of the technology revolves around our consumption and entertainment in the cities. But the most thoughtful innovation is happening in places outside of Silicon Valley or San Francisco.  Tech alone is not always the solution. In Yangguang, a rice-farming village, the local agricultural bureau encouraged farmers to implement chemical fertilisers, pesticides, and industrial farm machinery. The modern protocols led to a decline in soil quality. The villagers turned this around with organic farming. While tech did help the village steward their land, the people, not tech, steered the decisions.

The people, not tech, should steer decisions

The approach that is without boundaries and ambitions to scale reminds us of the humility and innovation, the ability to change political and social structures. Tech should be seen as affecting a set of relations, ecologies and environments. In the village, innovation is an ecosystem that doesn't scale across thousands of users but across the spectrum of time, regenerating the soil and community ties from season to season.

Scaling across time

Some of the most thoughtful innovation is happening in the world's rural communities.  This talk advocates for a new view of the countryside. It is not places lacking in tech but centres of humble innovation that emphasize community and sustainability.

"To see and understand the countryside is a crucial part of moving towards a more livable future for everyone," says coder, artist and organizer Xiaowei R. Wang. They've observed that some of the most careful, thoughtful innovation is happening in the world's rural communities, like Chinese chicken farmers using biometrics tracking and blockchain to improve supply chain transparency. In this talk, they advocate for a new perspective on the countryside: not as places lacking in tech or digital media literacy but as centers of humble innovation that emphasize community and sustainability.

Why entrepreneurship flourishes in the countryside

Unfortunately, the power of the idea itself isn't enough. Even combining the idea and working insane hours to make it a reality isn't enough. The biggest problem with the creative mind is that oftentimes, it's too off the scale.The creative mind tends to flock and surround itself with others who can see the vision (or at least can imagine it well enough). While this reinforces the power of the idea and can even make the quality of the idea better through collaboration and brainstorming, it has the unintended effect of isolating people who "don't get it" as either dumb or lacking vision.

Powerful ideas aren't enough to build a business

The reality is that most of the people who get written off as not understanding the big picture would probably be supporters of the idea . The problem isn't the people, the problem is in the way that the creative vision is communicated.Most of the time, because the creative person gets so wrapped up in their own world, they forget how to translate what they see into a version that the average person can understand. Because the vision never gets translated into a way that the average person can understand, it never gets momentum.

Don't write people off as being 'unable' to understand your vision

More often, they're a couple of small changes, communicated extremely well, and showcased in a way that the highest number of people can understand without having to think too hard. So the next time your brilliant idea -- whether it be a pitch for a company, a new product, or a movement -- isn't getting traction, don't think that it's because everyone else doesn't "get it." Focus on how you can communicate and show the idea visually to people in a better way.
