<ul><li>One's ego differs depending on the way one was brought up, the place where one grew up, the country, etc.</li><li>Ego to a healthy degree can help in achieving goals and generally things we want to gain.</li><li>However, ego makes us selfish, not thinking of others, and also makes us vulnerable to manipulation, as we will seek ways that satisfy our ego.</li></ul>If someone: 1. Is 'absorbed' in who they are 2. They have a need to share their opinion but not listen to others 3. They are emotionally attached to their beliefs. Then ego speaks.

1. Ego

Psychological projection: Projection of ideas or feelings onto something or someone.You see the world from your perspective, not as it really is. When you see someone, you don't see them as they really are, how they actually behave. We know very little about others in reality. When you see someone, you know very little about them.Carl Jung said, We have 3 personalities: 1. How we present ourselves to others. 2. Our character that we don't know we have. 3. The real you. The whole real us.

2. Projection

<ul><li>People live in a world of their own, or bubbles. They don't think alike.</li><li>People's way of thinking benefits them, or at least they think it does. For example, he thinks smoking is good for him because of stress, but it's actually bad for him.</li><li>People live in bubbles; that's why they are obsessed with their ideas/opinions. They think that this is the reality</li></ul>How to get rid of it: 1. You have to reduce the Ego.2. You have to learn other perspectives.3. You don't have to defend everything; it's just your perspective, not the truth.

3. People Live In Bubbles

Humans are social animals. People need a sense of belonging because they feel safe. The need to belong is very strong. That's why many people can be manipulated through group thinking (e.g. the Charles Manson case) because they don't want to be rejected by the group. However, the intense need to belong can lead you; <ul><li>to think less objectively and affect you negatively.</li><li> You also become more easily vulnerable to manipulation and losing yourself. </li></ul>-This doesn't mean that you shouldn't step out of your comfort zone, but be careful not to be too eager to fit in.

4. The Need For Belonging

The scarcity mindset is the frame of mind where something is not enough, in short supply, or there are not many opportunities. <ul><li>This scarcity mentality will be elevated in countries where the most 'valuable' things exist. </li><li>If you understand someone who has this way of thinking, you can also understand why they do what they do, e.g., 'There is not much time' or 'there are not many opportunities' </li><li>Marketing is using that mindset, e.g., Black Friday deals, we have to get them before they are gone! </li></ul>More generally, you can see the scarcity mentality in small things that others do and in yourself.

5.Scarsity Mindset

Essentially, self-sabotage is when you sabotage yourself from achieving a particular goal, usually because of fear of failure.<ul><li>Self-sabotage is common; if you don't stop it, it will be like going in circles.</li><li>Most people don't realize they are self-sabotaging.</li></ul>To overcome it; 1. you need to see and envision what you want to be (with a realistic purpose).2.Then you need to think about how you are going to achieve it.3. Try to adopt it as a part of yourself.4. You have to step out of your comfort zone.In what ways do you prevent yourself from achieving a goal? How can you change that?

The Understanding People Series 1 (1.-7.)

The two main characters, Rustin “Rust” Cohle, and Marty Hart, represent two worldviews which are antithetical to each other.

The two main characters

Marty is a fairly typical “every-man”. Marty describes himself in the first episode as “just a regular type dude…”. He attends church, prays before meals, has a wife and kids, but he’s also involved in an affair. Marty represents the sort of man that’s common in America- he believes that his life has purpose and value, and he believes in good and evil, even if he can’t always follow his own guidelines. Marty claims to believe in a greater purpose in life, he is a moral hypocrite, unable to act on what he claims to believe.

Marty Hart

Rust lives alone, in a bare-bones house that just serves as a place to sleep. Rust describes himself as a pessimist- he does not believe in any kind of objective morality or purpose in life. There is no God, and there are no objective rules. Rust, however, follows his philosophy adamantly. Through Marty and Rust’s discussions, True Detective presents a number of interesting philosophical concepts and also takes Rust on a journey of belief as his worldviews change.

''I'd consider myself a realist, alright? But in philosophical terms I'm what's called a pessimist”.

Rusts Worldview at the beginning of the season

“In eternity, where there is no time, nothing can grow. Nothing can become. Nothing changes. So Death created time to grow the things that it would kill. And you are reborn, but into the same life that you've always been born into."

Pessimism is a negative mindset that expects unfavorable outcomes. It's like believing that life has no purpose, similar to nihilism. Pessimism takes this further and claims that progress is an illusion- everything is actually getting worse. 19th century philosopher, Arthur Schopenhauer, was a well-known pessimist.

Key concepts about pessimism:
<ul>
	<li>Pessimists tend to focus on the negative aspects of life.</li>
	<li>A common test is the "half empty or half full" glass, where pessimists see it as half empty.</li>
	<li>Pessimism has had an impact on different ways of thinking throughout history.</li>
</ul>

Pessimism

Nihilism is the belief that all values are baseless and that nothing can be known or communicated. It is often associated with extreme pessimism and radical skepticism that condemns existence. A true nihilist would believe in nothing, have no loyalties, and no purpose other than, perhaps, an impulse to destroy. While few philosophers would claim to be nihilists, nihilism is most often associated with Friedrich Nietzsche.

Nihilism

Existentialism is a philosophy that focuses on the human experience and questions the meaning of existence. Jean-Paul Sartre, one of the key figures in existentialism, believed that even if God exists, life would still lack inherent meaning. This perspective suggests that individuals must create their own meaning in a universe that may seem fundamentally bleak.
Rust embodies these existentialist ideas, emphasizing the belief that life is characterized by suffering and lacks inherent purpose, even in the presence of a higher power.

Existentialism

Besides Rust’s philosophical pessimism, he also holds to a school of thought known as anti-natalism. Anti-natalism is the view;<ul><li>that humans should stop procreating, because bringing a human life into the world is ethically wrong (many nihilists create a system of ethics which focuses on reducing suffering in the world.)</li><li>natalists also argue that no one enters the world consensually, but is thrust into the world without having a say in it. </li></ul> Following his pessimistic outlook to it’s natural conclusion, Rust connects with the anti-natalist view.

nti-natalism

Rust is referring to a concept Nietzsche introduced, known as the Eternal Recurrence of the Same. Nietzsche addresses this concept in both The Gay Science and Thus Spoke Zarathustra. The idea of the Eternal Recurrence of the Same is that, as Rust describes, the universe repeats itself infinitely, over and over again, eternally. Each of our lives has been, is being, and will be lived out again infinitely many times, exactly the same as it did last time.

The idea of the Eternal Recurrence

At the end of the season, after a near death experience, Rust describes having a sort of out-of-body experience where he encountered the love of his dead daughter and father. This experience radically changes Rust’s worldview. He now seems to be;<ul><li>optimist</li><li>a sort of pantheist / God is everywhere</li><li>things are getting better, not worse. (The light wins in the end)</li><li> "Nothing but this love" - he believes that the dead exist in a disembodied way near us. (referring to his daughter and his father). </li></ul>

The philosophy behind True Detective season 1 

"Even though the characters are bunnies, they act like real people, except they look like bunnies. But what brings them all together is teamwork.At first, the group doesn't seem very close, but by the end of the book, they're tight. It's because when you're in a group, you really get to know everyone's true colors. For a group to bond, each member needs to realize that everyone's skills are crucial for everyone's survival, just like our characters do.And the most important part is that when you're in a group, you grow with it. You focus on improving together and let go of selfishness.

The importance of teamwork and self-development within it.

Who wants to hear about brave deeds when he’s ashamed of his own, and who likes an open, honest tale from someone he’s deceiving?”

Each rabbit warren that our heroes come across appear to provide insights into a particular societal structure, whether it be from the past or present times. <ul><li>Sandleford Warren</li><li>Efrafa</li><li>Watership Down Warren</li><li>Warren of Snares</li></ul>

Rabbits and today's society.

Sandleford Warren is run like a monarchy, with the chief rabbit overseeing all of the warren's operations. There is a set class system with limited mobility. Rabbits in the higher ranks are allowed to bully the lower-ranking members of their society without repercussions. It also seems to be a 'society' which, in order to face a danger, has to see it. They do not believe in superstitions and visions.

Sandleford Warren

Efrafa is a totalitarian warren ruled by a ruthless military leader. General Woundwort isn't afraid of flaunting his control over the warren. He maintains his power through intimidation, bribery, and torture. It reminds of a junta. Although the security system seems to work for the safety of the rabbits, the rabbits themselves live oppressed by the situation imposed on them by violence. Naturally, in such a lifestyle, some rabbits start to rebel.

Efrafa

It serves as an analogy for communism. The rabbits in the warren are exposed to constant propaganda and are not allowed to voice any complaints about the way the warren is run. Death permeates their society, but the rabbits have been tricked into believing that everyone is equal and that their community is a utopia. In general, rabbits seem to "blind themselves" to what is going on; they are distant from God (Frith), tradition, and generally try to escape from reality.

Warren of Snares

The Watership Down Warren is the closest thing to a democracy in the novel. Hazel is elected as chief rabbit because he cares about the other rabbits and has done an admirable job attending to their welfare.

Animals don't behave like men, If they have to fight, they fight; and if they have to kill they kill. But they don't sit down and set their wits to work to devise ways of spoiling other creatures' lives and hurting them. They have dignity and animality.

So, through all these rabbit warrens, the author seems to be looking for the ideal leader. Probably El-ahrairah and Hazel, who are both trying to save their people even by losing their lives for it.

Seeking the right leader.

Throughout the book, violence against animals is highlighted. The author seems to want to emphasize the destruction man has done to nature and animals. However, we also see violence among animals, specifically the thousand enemies of rabbits. This kind of violence is a natural need for survival as opposed to humans.

-There's terrible evil in the world."-It comes from men," said Holly. "All other elil do what they have to do and Frith moves them as he moves us. They live on the earth and they need food. Men will never rest till they've spoiled the earth and destroyed the animals.

Hazel and Bigwig were based off of two WWll officers Adams knew in the military during his part as a soldier before he retired and became an author.<ul><li> Hazel was inspired by Adams’ commanding officer, Major John Gifford, a man he described as “brave in the most self-effacing way” and an who rarely raised his voice. </li><li>Captain Desmond Kavanagh was the inspiration for the iconic Bigwig. Adams wrote, “afraid of nothing“ and “by nature entirely the public’s image of a parachute officer” just like his officer role in the story.</li></ul>Gifford survived the war but Captain Desmond Kavanagh did not.

A random fact

In the story Black Rabbit of Inlè, El-ahrairah returns home after a long time, but things have changed. When he asks some young men about the war, they laugh at him. The war? What war? After, when El-ahrairah talks to God (Frith), he says:«I am not angry. But I have learned that with creatures one loves, suffering is not the only thing for which one may pity them. A rabbit who does not know when a gift has made him safe is poorer than a slug, even though he may think otherwise himself.»So too, sometimes we forget those who fought for us and we take our freedom for granted. But is it?

𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒍𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒐𝒇 𝑬𝒍-𝒂𝒉𝒓𝒂𝒊𝒓𝒂𝒉

In this post, I will give some ideas about the book 'Watership Down' by Richard Adams. Although many consider the book 'children's', it actually has a lot of hidden symbolism about life and society, including wandering and teamwork.
