The definition of Knowledge

Allah has praised it. Religion is established by two principles: <ol><li>knowledge and evidence and </li><li>Combat on the battlefield, and the first is best.</li></ol>It's also important to have intention for the sake of Allah and in order with Sunnah.

The virtues of Knowledge

List of virtues:

Fard Kifayah, regarded as jihaad. And sometimes fard ayn, if there is something wajib upon you and you do not have the knowledge of it, the knowledge becomes fard ayn on you to seek.

The Ruling regarding seeking knowledge

<ul><li>Sincerety, for the sake of Allah alone</li><li>The Removal of ignorance from Himself and from Others </li><li>Advocating the Shariah – it is impossible to advocate shariah without men of knowledge. Etiquettes of a Student of Knowledge

<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Wisdom Invite with good manners of teaching etc. </li><li class="ql-align-justify">The student of knowledge is patient in seeking knowledge Do not cease nor become bored, seek in order to your ability </li><li class="ql-align-justify">Respecting the scholars and their Positions </li><li class="ql-align-justify">Holding steadfast to the Quraan and the Sunnah: Quran + Sunnah + statement of the scholars</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Verification and firmness: Be sure that the narrations are sound and don’t change scholar and books often, </li><li class="ql-align-justify">Taking care to understand the Quran and the SunnahUnderstanding is a big thing, you could have knowledge and not understand it properly</li></ul>

<ol><li> Taqwa: Allah says in Surah anfal if you fear him he will grant you furqan, which means a criterion between the right and the wrong. And it will expiate your sins and he will forgive you.</li><li>Perservance and consistency in seeking knowledge.</li><li>memorizing and preserving</li><li>Accompaning scholars</li></ol>

Means Which Assist in Acquiring Knowledge:

<ol><li> Referring to reliable books the ones written by known scholars, but it has some obsatcles. First that one has to give it a lot of time and tough endurance, not to become lazy. Secondly don’t only read books, it is important to have knowledge about princiles and rules from quran and Sunnah</li><li> Referring to a reliable teacher this is how you gain proper understanding, you ask and understand from a teacher.</li></ol>

Paths to acquiring knowledge

<ol><li>Jealousy and envy, this is known amongst the scholars and students of knowledge.</li><li>To pass a religious verdict without sound knowledge.</li><li>Pride</li><li>Being partial to a particular madhab and opinion</li><li>Putting oneself forward before being suitably qualified</li><li>Evil suspicion</li></ol>

Notes on: ‘The Book of Knowledge Vol. 1’ by Ibn Uthaymeen

<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Knowing the subject of the book: so that he can benefit from it, because he needs to specialize.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Knowing the terminologies used in the book. This is what the scholars do in the introduction to their books to save time.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Revising the book: You will find that when you read a book for the first time, especially the academic books which are filled with knowledge, you will come across a phrase whose meaning you will have to ponder over, because you are not familiar with it. But if you read the book again you will become familiar with it.</li></ul>

Dealing with the book involves several things:

<ul><li>Indepth Reading: Reading in depth to ponder and understand. This necessarily takes time.</li><li>Speed Reading: A quick reading to get an idea of the subject of the book, the topics covered and the content of the book. This is done by thumbing through the book and skimming it. This does not involve the same level of thinking as the first one. The best way to read books is to ponder the meanings and seek help from scholars who have understanding.</li></ul>

Reading books is of two types

<ul><li>Good books</li><li>Bad books</li><li>Books which are neither good nor bad.</li></ul>Try to make sure that your bookshelf is free of books which have bad content. There are books of literature, but they simply kill time without producing any benefit. And there are also harmful books which contain specific ideas or promote incorrect ideology - whether that is because the methodology, understanding of ‘aqeedah, revolutionary books should not be allowed on your bookshelf, because books nourish the soul just as food and drink nourish the body. If you nourish it with books such as those it will cause you a great deal of harm.

Books may be divided into three types:

<ul><li>Being keen to read important (Classical) books: The seeker of knowledge must be keen to adhere to the major books of past, because some of the modern writers do not have deep knowledge, so if you read what they have written you will find that it is superficial. They may quote things verbatim, or they may distort them to make them longer, but it is all waffle. So It's upon you to adhere to the important reference works written by the salaf (pious predecessors).</li><li>Collecting books: The seeker of knowledge should be keen to collect books, but he should prioritize.</li></ul>
