Documentaries are many things to many people, often simultane- ously. They are a form of self expression, like novels, songs, or paintings. They are a form of journalism, independent and unmedi- ated. They are tools for bridging the divide between cultures or exposing the harsh realities of a volatile world. They inspire, moti- vate, educate, exacerbate, and entertain. Documentaries reﬂect all that is great, challenging, disturbing, and humorous about the human condition.

What Is DOCUMENTARY?

“Who are your characters?What do they want?What are the stakes if they don’t get it? Where is the tension?Where is the story going?Why does it matter?” And so on.

Story Is All About

Story Basics: A story is the narrative, or telling, of an event or series of events, crafted in a way to interest the audience, whether they are readers, listeners, or viewers. At its most basic, a story has a beginning, middle, and end. It has compelling characters, rising tension, and conﬂict that reaches some sort of resolution. It engages the audi- ence on an emotional and intellectual level, motivating viewers to want to know what happens next

What Is STOR

Audience have empathy for main character. • This somebody wants something very badly. • This something is difﬁcult—but possible—to do, get, or achieve. • The story is told for maximum emotional impact and audience participation in the proceedings. • The story must come to a satisfactory ending.

Dramatic Story

The somebody is your protagonist, your hero, the entity whose story is being told. Note that your hero can, in fact, be very “unheroic,” and the audience might struggle to empathize with him or her. But the character and/or character’s mission should be compelling enough that the audience cares about outcome.

Who (or What) the Story Is About

The something that somebody wants is also referred to as a goal or an objective. Storytellers speak of active versus passive goals and active versus passive heroes. In general, you want a story’s goals and heroes to be active, which means that you want your story’s protagonist to be in charge of his or her own life: To set a goal and then to go about doing what needs to be done to achieve it.

What the Protagonist Wants

It does have to matter enough to be worth committing signiﬁcant time and resources to. If you only care a little about your protagonists and what they want, your ﬁnanciers and audience are likely to care not at all.

Perfect Goals

The something that is wanted—the goal—must be difﬁcult to do or achieve. If something is easy, there’s no tension, and without tension, there’s little incentive for an audience to keep watching. Tension is the feeling we get when issues or events are unresolved, especially when we want them to be resolved. It’s what motivates us to demand, “And then what happens? And what happens after that?” We need to know, because it makes us uncomfortable not to know.

Difﬁculty and Tangibility

Think of a movie thriller in which you’re aware, but the heroine is not, that danger lurks in the cellar. As she heads toward the steps, you feel escalating tension because she is walking toward danger. If you didn’t know that the bad guy was in the basement, she would just be a girl heading down some stairs. Without tension, a story feels ﬂat; you don’t care one way or the other about the outcomeWeather, illness, war, self-doubt, inexperience, hubris—all of these can pose obstacles as your protagonist strives to achieve his or her goal. And just as it can be useful to tell a complex story.

Just as you want your protagonist to have a worthy goal, you want him or her to have a worthy opponent. A common problem for many ﬁlmmakers is that they portray opponents as one- dimensional; if their hero is good, the opponent must be bad. In fact, the most memorable opponent is often not the opposite of the hero, but a complement to him or her.

It’s often described as “show, don’t tell,” which means that you want to present the evidence or information that allows viewers to experience the story for themselves, anticipating twists and turns and following the story line in a way that’s active rather than passive

You can find "FLOW STATE" in all people like, artist were in the process of creation, time seemed to fall away. It was a deep form of attention that you rarely see elsewhere. One rock climber told that : ‘The mystique of rock-climbing is climbing; you get to the top of a rock glad it’s over but really wish it could go on forever. The purpose of flow is to keep on flowing, not looking for a peak or utopia. It is not a moving up but a continuous flowing; you move up to keep the flow going.’ ~ If you want to get there, what you need to know three core components.

You Know This Feeling

The first thing you need to do is to choose a clearly defined goal. I want to paint this canvas; I want to run up this hill; I want to teach my child how to swim. You have to resolve to pursue it, and to set aside your other goals while you do. Flow can only come when you are monotasking – when you choose to set aside everything else and do one thing. Mihaly found that distraction and multitasking kill flow, and nobody will reach flow if they are trying to do two or more things at the same time. Flow requires all of your brainpower, deployed towards one mission.

Step #01

Secondly, you have to be doing something that is meaningful to you. This is part of a basic truth about attention: we evolved to pay attention to things that are meaningful to us. Our brain designed to pay attention to the stuff that matters to you. In any situation, it will be easier to pay attention to things that are meaningful to you, and harder to pay attention to things that seem meaningless. When you are trying to make yourself do something that lacks meaning, your attention will often slip and slide off it.

Step #02

Thirdly, it will help if you are doing something that is at the edge of your abilities, but not beyond them. If the goal is too easy, you’ll go into autopilot – but if it’s too hard, you’ll start to feel anxious and you won’t flow either. Picture a rock climber who has medium-ranking experience. If she clambers up any old brick wall. she’s not going to get into flow because it’s easy. If she’s suddenly told to climb the Mount Kilimanjaro, she won’t get into flow either because she’ll freak out. When she needs is a hill that is, ideally higher and harder than the one she did last time.

Step #03

So: to find flow, you need to choose one single goal; make sure your goal is meaningful to you; and try to push yourself to the edge of your abilities. Once you have created these conditions, and you hit flow, you can recognise it because it’s a distinctive mental state. You feel you are purely present in the moment. You experience a loss of self-consciousness. In this state it’s like your ego has vanished

a small study commissioned by Hewlett-Packard looked at the IQ of some of their workers in two situations. At first they tested their IQ when they were not being distracted or interrupted. Then they tested their IQ when they were receiving emails and phone calls. The study found that ‘technological distraction’ – just getting emails and calls – caused a drop in the workers’ IQ by an average of ten points. To give you a sense of how big that is: in the short term, that’s twice the knock to your IQ that you get when you smoke cannabis.

So if you spend your time switching a lot, then the evidence suggests you will be slower, you’ll make more mistakes, you’ll be less creative, and you’ll remember less of what you do

A team at UCLA got people to do two tasks at once, and tracked them to see the effects. It turned out that afterwards they couldn’t remember what they had done as well as people who did just one thing at a time. This seems to be because it takes mental space and energy to convert your experiences into memories, and if you are spending your energy instead on switching very fast, you’ll remember and learn less.

I've read many stories over the years, but only a few have truly stuck with me. Out of all those stories, there's one that stands out as my absolute favorite. It's about a Carpenter and a Rich Landlord, and what really touched my heart, was the profound words spoken by the Carpenter. Those words completely changed my perspective and have even helped me overcome my tendency to procrastinate at times.

WORLD'S BEST LIFE CHANGING STORY - 10X PRODUCTIVITY

Once upon a time, in a small village, there lived a wealthy landlord, he had great fortune but was extremely cautious when it came to spending his money. One day, he decided to hire a carpenter to build a door for his animal farm. The landlord specifically requested a simple door, without any fancy decorations. He promised to pay the carpenter 2 dollars for his work and mentioned that he would come the next day to inspect the door.

STORY FIRST PART

The next day, when the landlord came to see the door, he was amazed by the carpenter's hard work. The door was stunning, perfectly nailed, and polished. The landlord admired the door but couldn't help but wonder why the carpenter had made it so much better. I take pride in being useful and always achieving my best craftsmanship."

Among the crowd, the old landlord spotted the carpenter who had built his door before and remembered his skills. With joy, he awarded the carpenter with the contract, which completely transformed the carpenter's life and turned him into a successful and wealthy person.

What I discovered is that highly successful people don’t prioritize tasks on a to-do list, or follow some complex five-step system, or refer to logic tree diagrams to make decisions. Actually, highly successful people don’t think about time much at all. Instead, they think about values, priorities, and consistent habits.

Dan Ariely, a Duke University professor of psychology and behavioral economics, suggests that most people are most productive and have the highest cognitive functioning in the first two hours after they’re fully awake.

Others choose to do the most unpleasant tasks early in the morning in what’s known as the “eat the frog first” strategy. Use a calendar and schedule your entire day into 15-minute blocks. It sounds like a pain, but this will set you up in the 95th percentile as far as organization goes. If it's not on the calendar, it doesn't get done. If it's on the calendar, it gets done no matter what. Use this not just for appointments, but workouts, calls, email blocks, etc.

<ul><li>First, schedule a chunk of time for everything that is important to you; this is called “time blocking” or “time boxing.”</li><li>Second, important items should be scheduled as early in the day as possible. No matter how much we try to control our time and calendars, we all have things that “come up” that might need our attention.</li><li>Third, don’t cancel goals; reschedule them if necessary.</li><li>Fourth, treat your time-blocked calendar entries as if they were appointments with your doctor; they are that important.</li></ul>

In Jeff Weiner's calendar, there is a host of time slots greyed out, but with no indication of what's going on. The grey sections reflect "buffers,"He schedule between 90 minutes and two hours of these buffers every day. It's a system, he developed over the several years in response to a schedule that was becoming so jammed with back-to-back meetings. At first, these buffers felt like indulgences. But over time I realized not only were these breaks important, they were absolutely necessary in order for me to do my job.
