The phrase "deaf, dumb, and blind" appears in the Quran, specifically in Surah Al-Baqarah (The Cow), verse 171. It is used as a metaphor to describe people who are completely oblivious to the truth, unable to hear it, understand it, or respond to it, essentially signifying their rejection of guidance despite being presented with it; they are "deaf" to the message, "dumb" in their inability to speak the truth, and "blind" to the obvious signs of reality.

The Metaphorical Meaning Of Deaf, Dumb, and Blind

This verse is often used in Islamic teachings to describe the state of those who stubbornly reject the message of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and refuse to believe in God's signs.

(They are) deaf, dumb, blind so they shall not return (to the right path) Deaf and dumb, insensible to light, they are unable to retrace their steps that lead them into error. deaf, dumb, blind, therefore they cannot return (to the light). Deaf, dumb, blind, so they shall not return.

Unable To Return To The Right Path

(2:18) They are deaf, they are dumb, they are blind; [17] they will never return (to the Right Way).

They have become deaf to hear, dumb to utter and blind to perceive the truth.

Those who reject the truth, although they may have the physical organs and faculties for believing, seeing and hearing, are akin to blind and deaf persons, only worse, because “seals” are placed over the spiritual insight of the heart, eyes, and ears due to their obstinate rejection of the truth. As Allah Most High tells us in the preceding verse, “Allah has sealed their hearts and their hearing, and their sight is covered. They will suffer a tremendous punishment.” (Surah al-Baqarah 2:7)

Spiritually Deaf, Mute, and Blind

The verse refers to the similarities between hypocrites and unbelievers. Both are deaf, blind, and dumb, meaning they do not believe or understand the truth. Hypocrites, even though they may appear Muslim, lack true belief. This unbelief is caused by prejudices, wrong viewpoints, and indulgence in wrongdoing. Like unbelievers, hypocrites are hindered from understanding the truth due to prejudice, pride, egotism, ignorance, or enmity.

The State of Unbelievers and Hypocrites

And the likeness of those who disbelieve is as the likeness of one who shouteth unto that which heareth naught except a call and a cry; deaf, dumb; blind, wherefore they understand not.

And the example of the disbelievers is similar to one who calls upon one that hears nothing except screaming and yelling; deaf, dumb, blind - so they do not have sense.

Preaching to unbelievers is like talking to someone who cannot hear anything except yells and shouts. They are deaf, dumb, and blind; they have no understanding.

The likeness of those who disbelieve (in relation to the messenger) is as the likeness of one who calleth unto that which heareth naught except a shout and cry. Deaf, dumb, blind, therefore they have no sense.

The parable of those who reject Faith is as if one were to shout Like a goat-herd, to things that listen to nothing but calls and cries: Deaf, dumb, and blind, they are void of wisdom.

And the example of those who disbelieve, is as that of him who shouts to the (flock of sheep) that hears nothing but calls and cries. (They are) deaf, dumb and blind. So they do not understand.

The secularity of the society in which we live must share considerable blame in the erosion of spiritual powers of all traditions, since our society has become a parody of social interaction lacking even an aspect of civility. Believing in nothing, we have preempted the role of the higher spiritual forces by acknowledging no greater good than what we can feel and touch.”

Current decadence, greed, evil, falsehood, corruption, violence, injustice, and exploitation all have a cosmic undertone. It is a “cosmic law” that civilizations which have become megalomaniacal will inevitably collapse. This is because all levels of existence are corroded – including the religious realm. Only a dimension beyond can redeem us.

They believe that one must fight and overcome the ego, as mentioned in the hadith: "Your worst enemy is your nafs which lies between your flanks."This means that self-control and self-awareness are crucial in order to overcome negative traits within ourselves. In tasawwuf, it is emphasized to do battle with the ego and break it.This concept is also found in the saying: "Know yourself, and you will know your Lord."

Understanding the Power of the Ego

The concept of "nafs" refers to the soul, or the essence, of a human being. Depending on its state, it can take on different descriptions. These can include:<ul><li>The Satisfied Soul: This is when the nafs has achieved calmness and is able to resist the temptations of passion. It is considered to be in a positive state.</li><li>The Self-Accusing Soul: When the nafs is unable to find calmness, but still resists the pull of desires.. This is because it recognizes its shortcomings and rebukes its owner for neglecting worship of God.</li></ul>

The Concept of "Nafs"

<ul><li>The Soul that Enjoins Evil: In this state, the nafs gives in to the temptations of passion and follows the desires of shaytan. It is considered to be in a negative state.</li></ul>In its essence, the nafs does not necessarily consider its return to God, and is easily influenced by shaytan and his temptations. Only when it is able to resist these temptations and strive towards God can it achieve a state of satisfaction.

Allah Most High has placed His Divine Secrets within us, but we have forgotten our origin and true potential. Here's why:<ul><li>Arrogance leads to unrealistic expectations.</li><li>Anger flares up when reality doesn't meet our expectations.</li><li>Once anger catches fire, it's hard to extinguish.</li><li>Like a fire, anger destroys our positive qualities and leaves us wounded.</li></ul>

Our only purpose is to give our love, respect and service to Allah.. but if given the opportunity every person would be a pharaoh. His ego would declare itself the highest lord.We must kill the dragon that is our ego and then we will find Allah with us and around us and within us.

The Ultimate Purpose In Life

If the resolve of the seeker is weak, he will be afflicted with arrogance, will not listen to good advice, and may even fight with those who wish for his well-being, thinking they are belittling him and behaving in a superior manner.In anger, his mood will become dark and disappointed, and he may start to think that he took the wrong path and was better off before.He may even blame those who led him to this path, ultimately falling back into his previous condition of being an animal in human form.

If he is warned at the beginning of the second step of Nafsi Lawwama of these dangers, and if he is intelligent enough not to release the hand which leads him, and if he follows the advice on how to fight the three enemies of hypocrisy, anger, and arrogance, he will pass this stage quickly.The longer one lingers in this transitory stage, the worse will be the trials.
