“The chief task in life is simply this: to identify and separate matters so that I can say clearly to myself which are externals not under my control, and which have to do with the choices I actually control. Where then do I look for good and evil?” — Epictetus This is not about reading books and gain a lot of wisdom. This is about the ability to look within yourself and focus on the influences you control. This way the improvement you seek is always within your control and what the Stoics referred to as wisdom.

1. Wisdom

“‘If you seek tranquility, do less.’ Or (more accurately) do what’s essential—what the logos of a social being requires, and in the requisite way. Which brings a double satisfaction: to do less, better. Because most of what we say and do is not essential. If you can eliminate it, you’ll have more time, and more tranquility. Ask yourself at every moment, ‘Is this necessary?’” — Marcus Aurelius, Meditations. This is about controlling your desires (emotional and material desires), about not attaching emotional value to those. It’s okay to want nice things, but don’t let them consume you.

2. Temperance

“Don’t you know life is like a military campaign? One must serve on watch, another in reconnaissance, another on the front line… So it is for us—each person’s life is a kind of battle, and a long and varied one too. You must keep watch like a soldier and do everything commanded… You have been stationed in a key post, not some lowly place, and not for a short time but for life.” — Epictetus, Discourses, 3.24.31–36 This is about standing your ground. To dare to take that path of most resistance, to take that fear head-on. Because you know it will make you stronger.

3. Courage

“And a commitment to justice in your own acts. Which means: thought and action resulting in the common good. What you were born to do.” — Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, 9.31 This is about following your path and doing what is right. To follow your path, you need to fight resistance and resistance comes in all shapes and forms. If you fight it the path is laid out for you. <ul><li>For example if you want to work out, resistance will be there in the form of a couch and television. </li><li>If you want to have a powerful relationship with your spouse, resistance will be there in in the form of temptations. </li></ul>

4. Justice

We all have our ideas about happiness and how to achieve happiness.

Everything has a price, a sentence you hear a lot nowadays. But how does this apply to your life? <ul><li>The power of being consistent leads you to build skills, build a happy life, etc. </li><li>This is called making investments because you invest in something.</li></ul>Paying the price can be two things: either you do something too much or don’t do anything.

Everything has a price!

The more work you do, the faster you reach your goal. That may be true, but at what price? <ul><li>Did you invest in your relationships? </li><li>Did you invest in your health?</li></ul>Probably not, and the results of the things you neglected will be the price you pay later  For example: <ol><li>You went to bed too late and woke up early </li><li>Your energy levels are consistently low </li><li>You ignored your partner </li><li>You lost the connection </li><li>You ignored the things you like and lost touch with them... the list continues</li></ol> Be aware of what you lose when you give something too much priority.

Doing too much

When doing nothing at all, you can’t expect any results. But also eventually there is a price you will pay for doing that. <ul><li>Neglect your health and pay the price of being unhealthy. </li><li>Neglect on learning a skill, and you will pay the price of not taking care of yourself or your family. </li><li>Neglect a relationship and pay the price of a lost connection </li><li>Neglect to take care of your mind and pay the price of being unrestful </li></ul>

Doing nothing at all.

There are several things you should prioritize and are the same for everyone: <ul><li>Connections and relationships </li><li>Physical Health </li><li>Mental Health </li><li>Mindset</li></ul>When these are in balance, you will get close to yourself and the things you love and find meaningful. Another side effect of this is that you will be hyper-consistent and productive. You will find time slots between these pillars and make the best use of them as possible.

You probably have heard the saying, less is more. In these stashes, we are going to let this idea sink in.&nbsp;&nbsp;Because it is easy to say less is more, but taking action on it it requires you to go a level deeper. It boils down to self-control.

Less is more! How to practice self-control?

It all starts with a desire, a desire to start something, to eat something, etc.&nbsp;You feel the urge to react to everything to comes to mind. A better word for this may be an impulse.&nbsp;<ul><li>What happens when you react to all of those impulses? You become reactive instead of proactive. Your desires will control you, you become a slave to them.</li></ul>

Unlimited Desires

So what can be done about this?&nbsp;It sounds easy: Say no! When a desire comes up, for example, start that new project, or that crave for junk food, say no to it.&nbsp;People are created with the ability to respond: Response ability. So choose how you respond and say no.

Self Control

It is hard to say no to your desires. Because your mind is programmed to always go for the easiest solution.There is are multiple ways to avoid this.<ul><li dir = "auto">You need to deny yourself the easiest solution.</li><li dir = "auto">You need to practice discipline. Go to bed on time, wake up on time, exercise, etc.</li></ul>When you practice discipline you will become better at denying yourself and saying no to the negative voice.By choosing to exercise you say no to something else &amp; do things you dislike, but you keep doing them over and over again. At a certain point, you will notice your mind gives up and you win the battle.

Start practicing Self-Control

Don’t be afraid that there won’t be anything left to do for you when you control those desires. <ul><li>Steven Pressfield describes this in his book War of Art. He describes those desires as resistance to reach your goals and walk the path you are meant to walk. </li><li>Filtering out those desires, removing that resistance will bring you closer to what you are meant to be doing. </li></ul>This means you have a clear mind. With a clear mind, you are able to make better choices and actions that lead towards your goals. Just think of it as the fog that blocks your vision. Clearing up desires will remove the brain fog.
