When I do not understand a passage of the word of God, I lift up my heart to the Lord, that he would be pleased, by his Holy Spirit, to instruct me, and I expect to be taught, though I do not fix the time when, and the manner how it should be; When I am going to minister in the word, I seek help from the Lord, and while I, in the consciousness of natural inability as well as utter unworthiness, begin this his service, I am not cast down, but of good cheer, because I look for his assistance, and believe that he, for his dear Son’s sake, will help me.

An Example Of Faith In Action

Do but stand still in the hour of trial, and you will see the help of God, if you trust in Him.&nbsp;

But there is so often a forsaking the ways of the Lord in the hour of trial, and thus the food for faith, the means whereby our faith may be increased, is lost. This leads me to the following important point. You ask, How may I, a true believer, have my faith strengthened? I. As the increase of faith is a good gift, it must come from God, and therefore he ought to be asked for this blessing.

Strenghtening Our Faith - First Step

1. If God has become known to us through prayer and meditation on his own word, this will lead us, in general at least, with a measure of confidence to rely upon Him: and thus the reading of the word of God, together with meditation on it, will be one especial means to strengthen our faith…

Practical Things - Step 2

The above step is true because His almighty power and infinite wisdom have been actually exercised in helping and delivering His people; and we will repose upon the willingness of God to help us, because we have not only learned from the Scriptures what a kind, good, merciful, gracious, and faithful being God is, but because we have also seen in the word of God, how in a great variety of instances He has proved Himself to be so.

2. It is of the utmost importance that we seek to maintain an upright heart and a good conscience.Every trust or distrust cand result in increasing our faith or in decreasing our faith. Either we trust in God, and in that case we neither trust in ourselves, nor in our fellow-men, nor in circumstances, nor in anything besides; or we do trust in one or more of these, and in that case do not trust in God.

Continued the step above -&gt; Therefore, do not knowingly and habitually indulge in those things which are contrary to the mind of God.Because in the end, all my confidence towards God, all my leaning upon Him in the hour of trial, will be gone, if I have a guilty conscience, and do not seek to put away this guilty conscience, but still continue to do things which are contrary to the mind of God.

If we, indeed, desire our faith to be strengthened, we should not shrink from opportunities where our faith may be tried, and, therefore, through the trial, be strengthened.The more I am in a position to be tried in faith with reference to my body, my family, my service for the Lord, my business, etc., the more shall I have opportunity of seeing God’s help and deliverance; and every fresh instance in which he helps and delivers me will tend towards the increase of my faith.

4. The last important point for the strengthening of our faith is, that we let God work for us, when the hour of the trial of our faith comes, and do not work a deliverance of our own.Yea, however weak our faith may be, God will try it; only with this restriction, that as, in every way, he leads us on gently, gradually, patiently, so also with reference to the trial of our faith. At first, our faith will be tried very little in comparison with what it may be afterwards; for God never lays more upon us than he is willing to enable us to bear.

Now, when the trial of faith comes, we are naturally inclined to distrust God, and to trust rather in ourselves, or in our friends, or in circumstances. We will rather work a deliverance of our own, somehow or other, than simply look to God and wait for His help. But if we do not patiently wait for God’s help, if we work a deliverance of our own, then at the next trial of our faith it will be thus again, we shall be again inclined to deliver ourselves; and thus, with every fresh instance of that kind, our faith will decrease;

Whilst, on the contrary, were we to stand still in order to see the salvation of God, to see his hand stretched out on our behalf, trusting in him alone, then our faith would be increased, and with every fresh case in which the hand of God is stretched out on our behalf in the hour of the trial of our faith, our faith would be increased yet more.Would the believer, therefore, have his faith strengthened, he must, especially, give time to God, who tries his faith in order to prove to His child, in the end, how willing He is to help and deliver him, the moment it is good for him.

I have bad days, just like the rest of you. Sometimes, I feel tired, am not in the mood to work, and want to quit and punch an old lady in the face to feel better about myself (jk). This is completely normal. You might ask yourself: “If I’ll still feel shit sometimes even when I follow my calling, live a meaningful life, and do what matters to me, what’s the freaking point?!” The point is I’d gladly choose a shitty day where I work on something dear to my heart over everyone serving me cake, kissing my butt, and showering me with praise but everything feels meaningless. I’ve quit a prestigious master’s program to start my own business and even though I’ve cried blood, sweat, and tears many times, I didn’t regret it even once. You'll face a bunch of challenges in your life, too. An annoying boss. A rocky relationship. Financial struggles. Weight loss. Paying extra for Guacamole at Chipotle. But as the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche once said: "He who has a why to live can bear almost any how." When the clouds turn gray, you'll see if there's sunshine inside of you. Living on purpose is a choice. Will you drag yourself through life and spend your time on meaningless distractions? Will you go through the motions and live the same day every day, watching the clock tick by until it’s time to retire? Or will you decide to do something that fulfills you and that makes a fucking difference in the world? Following your purpose doesn’t mean everything will be perfect. But even on the worst days, you’ll feel better than before because this time, you’ve got a reason to go through it. This time, your efforts and struggles give your life meaning. And that's what it's all about.

1 QUESTION FOR YOU How would the lives of others improve if you made yourself a priority? Most people view prioritizing yourself and caring for others as opposites - when in fact, they're two sides of the same coin. A man can only support others to the extent he supports himself. How can you spread good vibes if your head is filled with bad ones? How can you comfort your partner if you don't have emotional maturity? How can you help your grandma carry heavy things if you're morbidly obese and can barely carry yourself? There's a reason why in airplanes, you get briefed to put on your own oxygen mask first, then help others. Of course, it's a fine line between prioritizing yourself and becoming an egomaniac who only cares about his own good. How do you walk it? As so often, it's not about the "what" you're doing, but the place it's coming from. Do you make yourself your biggest priority because you want to be the best, fueled by a desire for money, power, and superiority? Or do you focus on yourself because you want to become the best man you can be and share your gifts with the world? If the latter is the case, focus on yourself first. This isn't egotistical, inconsiderate, or heartless. It's just the rational thing to do. You can't pour from an empty cup.

THE CHALLENGE Feel deeply and let go once a day. When was the last time you felt bad? Maybe you got angry in a meeting because your boss or coworker talked over you. Maybe your partner said something hurtful. Maybe you lost a long-loved friend or relative. Maybe you woke up and felt stressed out, anxious, or miserable for no reason at all. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to let go of these feelings instead of having them drag you down? A few weeks ago, I started reading <a dir="ltr" href="https://amzn.to/2VVzU7R">The Sedona Method </a>. It's a straightforward technique that helps you let go of "negative" emotions as they come up and experience inner peace. It works wonders, but there's a small catch. You have to accept end embrace your emotions first. As men, we're not used to exploring our feelings. We're big, strong, rational, and battle-hardened warriors who have no time to be sad. But if you suppress your emotions, you can't let them go. To make accepting and letting go easier, the Sedona Method proposes five simple questions: 1. What am I feeling right now? 2. Can I welcome or at least accept this feeling? 3. Can I let it go? 4. Am I willing to let it go? 5. When? Look at these questions as a catalyst for the process of experiencing and letting go of your emotions, not as logical inquiries to be debated and answered. Respond intuitively, even if the answer is "no" or "not now." With every question, dive deeper into what you experience - that's what fuels the process. For the next two weeks, sit down, close your eyes, and practice letting go at least once a day. The more often, the better - if you find yourself with unwanted feelings throughout the day, it's the perfect time to practice. Go through as many rounds as you need. Remember - it's not about forcing yourself to do something. Rather, it's about letting yourself experience what is already there. That's how you let go. When team members are distracted because they don’t have the appropiate tools to do their work, it becomes difficult for them to contribute at a higher level.

1. Tools for the job

What is expected of me?As leaders, you need to provide clarity for:<ul><li>shared purpose and goals</li><li>organizational structure</li><li>defined roles and responsibilities</li><li>values and behaviors that define success for the team</li></ul>This will give members a security and will define their role and place on the team.

2. Organizational clarity

In order to find synergy and alignment, team members need to build trust and respect for one another, be self-aware and others-aware, and feel like they can actively bring their best work.Basically this brings value and trust which leads to high commitment and an active contribution.

3. Psychological safety

We are designed as humans for community. We are designed to do life with others. How can a leader enable this?Building organizational rhythms that allow for connection and create a culture of mutual commitment and accountability.But it’s important here that we don’t create false harmony or toxic positivity. We must lean into the principles of healthy relationships where candor ( the quality of being open and honest ) and integrity drive our interactions with one another.

4. Connection

You cannot force anyone to find personal fulfillment in their work, but you can create an environment that fosters it, by atrenting to the first four needs and thereby setting stage for this one to be achieved as well.When team membes are fulfilled, they are fully utilizing their gifts with a team which they love, doing work that is fulfilling. And the awesome part is that this fulfillment is contagious - it is actively reproducing in the other members. They notice other team members at different stages and are personally invested in helping everyone on the team move through the stages.

5. Personal fulfillment

Studies are showing that at least 40% of workers are contemplating quitting their jobs. Economists are calling it “The Great Resignation.”

As the pandemic recedes, a new issue is emerging for leaders. Economists are calling it “<a dir="ltr" href="https://www.fastcompany.com/90651178/welcome-to-the-great-resignation-should-you-quit-your-job-too" rel="noopener">The Great Resignation. </a>” Studies are showing that at least <a dir="ltr" href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/worklab/work-trend-index/hybrid-work?ranMID=24542&amp;ranEAID=TnL5HPStwNw&amp;ranSiteID=TnL5HPStwNw-gr34l_kiZ6.yqv5Ew_o.bw&amp;epi=TnL5HPStwNw-gr34l_kiZ6.yqv5Ew_o.bw&amp;irgwc=1&amp;OCID=AID2200057_aff_7593_1243925&amp;tduid=%28ir__1lxifqtyskkfqzytkk0sohzifv2xu6hvd2avjxwx00%29%287593%29%281243925%29%28TnL5HPStwNw-gr34l_kiZ6.yqv5Ew_o.bw%29%28%29&amp;irclickid=_1lxifqtyskkfqzytkk0sohzifv2xu6hvd2avjxwx00" rel="noopener">40% of workers </a>are contemplating quitting their jobs.

After a year of reevaluating and readjusting, we’re collectively entering what psychologists say is the 6th stage of grief: a pursuit of meaning and purpose. And this pursuit of meaning and purpose is causing many people to reconsider why they do what they do.

This dynamic creates a unique opportunity for leaders to build cultures in which purpose is clear and team members can find meaning in their contribution.

As leaders who are shaping the culture of our teams, it’s our responsibility to bring clarity to who we are and how we work to achieve our mission. And just for clarity’s sake, if you lead a team of volunteers, if you lead a ministry or department, if you’re the Lead Pastor or the CEO, there is a culture that you are shaping and forming.

Whether it’s two people or 2,000, you have the opportunity, privilege and responsibility to be intentional in creating a culture that great people are clamoring to be a part of and want to remain a part of.

The entire point of culture is the stewardship of people in pursuit of our mission. That’s your responsibility as a leader. Culture isn’t fluffy stuff or a “nice to” perk that you’ll get to if you have time. It’s the very linchpin that ties your purpose and strategy together. You can’t achieve your purpose without a team of people to make it happen.

Arguably the greatest challenge ahead of us post-pandemic has less to do with adjusting our strategies and more to do with how we retain our team members.

Let me take you back to your freshman year Psychology 101 class. You may remember learning about Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.

“Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a motivational theory in psychology comprising a five-tier model of human needs, often depicted as hierarchical levels within a pyramid.

From the bottom of the hierarchy upwards, the needs are: physiological (food and clothing), safety, love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualization. Maslow’s belief was that needs lower down in the hierarchy must be satisfied before individuals can attend to needs higher up.”

Similar to Maslow’s hierarchy, there is a hierarchy of employee needs that impact the culture of your team. Let’s call it the Culture Hierarchy of Needs.

Like Maslow’s hierarchy, there are 5 needs that impact a team member’s ability to grow with your organization and positively contribute to the health of your culture. And in the coming “Great Resignation,” attending to these needs may be our best effort to retain great staff.

Here are 5 Needs To Fill To Fight The Great Resignation:

This is about making sure team members have the basic tools to do their job. Are you equipping your team with what they need to do their job in today’s environment?

Historically this would have meant equipping them with computers that work, adequate space and time to do their work, and appropriate compensation. Today, this may also mean accommodations for working from home.

When team members are distracted because they don’t have the appropriate tools to do their work, it becomes difficult for them to contribute at a higher level. When our basic needs aren’t met, we’re fighting for survival rather than focusing on achieving the mission.

Now, I know what you may be thinking: we don’t have the budget for all the latest gadgets that my team members want. I get that, but I’m not talking about extravagance. What is important is that we truly understand what our team members need and are consciously ensuring that we’re not unintentionally frustrating and inhibiting them from doing their best work.

You know where I see this problem most often? In poor onboarding for new staff. It might not even be that we don’t have the appropriate tools, it’s more that we don’t do a good job of intentionally equipping our staff, especially new staff. You can make sure that staff members have their basic needs met by ensuring they are adequately equipped and trained when they begin.

Organizational clarity means I understand what is expected of me, I have clarity of my place in the organization, and my role and responsibilities are clear. This stage answers the questions “Who are we?” and “How do we behave in order to achieve our mission?” When leaders provide organizational clarity, team members are secure in their role and their place on the team.

As leaders, to fight The Great Resignation, we need to provide clarity for:

<ul><li>shared purpose and goals </li><li>organizational structure </li><li>defined roles and responsibilities </li><li>values and behaviors that define success for the team </li> </ul>

I can not overemphasize the power of this stage. It’s essentially the crux of culture.

Here is the challenge: if you’re the leader, this stuff feels clear to you. We undervalue it and underestimate its impact because it’s not a perceived need of ours. Culture feels clearest at the top, but I promise you that your culture is not as strong as you think it is.

Clarity at this stage will be the game-changer in building a culture that is aligned and working effectively to achieve the mission.

Psychological safety is about employees feeling emotionally secure when they are at work.

Organizational psychologist Adam Grant explains it this way“…psychological safety is not a matter of relaxing standards, making people comfortable, being nice and agreeable, or giving unconditional praise. It’s fostering a climate of respect, trust, and openness in which people can raise concerns and suggestions without fear of reprisal.”

It builds upon the first two needs in that if I have the tools I need to do my job and I’ve been provided clarity for what to do and how to do it, I am prepared to better engage with my team. In order to find synergy and alignment, team members need to build trust and respect for one another, be self-aware and others-aware, and feel like they can actively bring their best work.

This need is being met when each team member is actively contributing. At this stage unity is strong, the organization demonstrates a high commitment to development and growth opportunities. Team members feel valued and trusted. Their voice is respected. We are actively developing leaders and seeing people grow and thrive.

One of our great needs as humans is belonging. We are designed for community. We’re designed to do life with others. It’s the functional definition of the word team – two or more people working together to achieve a goal.

Research tells us that employees don’t quit jobs, they quit people. If employees have their basic needs met (stage 1), they have safety and clarity in their work (stage 2), and they feel comfortable to actively contribute (stage 3), they will naturally build connections with their co-workers. When we’re addressing this need, team members want to be together.

As leaders, we foster this and protect this need of culture by ensuring that we have organizational rhythms that allow for connection and that we create a culture of mutual commitment and accountability.

It’s important here that we don’t create false harmony or toxic positivity, but that we lean into the principles of healthy relationships where candor, honesty, and integrity drive our interactions with one another. The values we defined in stage two must be consistently lived into in order for stage four to be realized.

This final need is an outcome. You can’t force anyone to find personal fulfillment in their work, but you can create an environment that fosters it by attending to the first four needs and thereby setting the stage for this one to be achieved as well.

When team members are personally fulfilled, they are fully utilizing their gifts with a team that they love, doing work that is fulfilling. The best part of this is that when team members are operating at this level, they are actively reproducing this in others. They notice other team members at different stages and are personally invested in helping everyone on the team move through the stages.

When an organization’s culture achieves the Culture Hierarchy of Needs, employees are less likely to be among the 40% considering a job change in the great resignation because they have found purpose and meaning in their work.

Extraordinary culture is possible. It’s not some abstract thing that you as a leader have no control over. In fact, you have ridiculous control over this. Every great leader longs to have a great team. Understanding these fundamental needs and being purposeful to meet them gives you the clarity you need to achieve the culture you want.

2. My code is an Art and has to be Perfect

In many cases, your next project is more or less similar to previous ones. It would make no sense to spend a lot of time learning new tech since you already have proven solutions. But sometimes, it can be the wrong decision to make.It can easily become your comfort zone and it can make you avoid better solutions for your current project.

3. I'll use 'X' for this project because I know it

It can be challenging to plan every detail of the project.&nbsp;From a product manager view you have to think about the limitations of the technology, you have to think about users who will use your product, you cannot forget about business and marketing requirements and so on.Sometimes, some of the requirements aren't known at the beginning; sometimes business circumstances change, and sometimes you have to build something first to figure out it can be done better.Important note: product managers make mistakes as programmers make bugs.Instead of trying to show how wrong they are, you should focus on finding solutions.

I was working as a programmer for over five years. It isn’t impressive since some of you probably have three times longer work experience, but I liked to think of myself as a senior developer. That sounds serious and important, doesn’t it?

One day, I got a proposition to work as the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) in the med-tech startup. After some time in this new job role, I can look back and say, I wasn’t a senior developer. Don’t get me wrong — I still believe I have excellent knowledge about programming, especially web development — but, if that’s the case, why did I say I wasn’t a senior?

Because of these four things I have in my head now.

No, they are not.

Yes, users use the app in an unexpected, often weird, way.

Yes, users can ask questions that seem really stupid.

Yes, sometimes users demand features that seem pointless.

Yes, users have difficulties with functions that seem to be self-explanatory.

The user is not an expert. My doctor doesn’t require me to know the difference between low-density and high-density lipoproteins. So, why did I used to assume users should know what kind of browser they use? It is obvious to me and you, but my mom thinks Google and the internet are synonyms. She would say she doesn’t use any browser because she uses Google 🙈.

Sometimes to make the user happy, I had to override framework parts to change its default behaviors. Sometimes I had to add support for browsers I didn’t want to (greetings for Safari users 😅 ). It is silly when I’m talking about it today, but those days I really thought it was the client’s fault when I had to make some workarounds in my code just because of their custom requirements.

2. My Code Is an Art and Has To Be Perfect

Clean code, unit tests, great documentation — these are undoubtedly important things. As a programmer, I always wanted to write clean code using modern patterns, and I frequently checked if all dependencies in a project were up to date, etc. I wanted to be the Good Programmer.

When my product manager asked me to drop the unit tests to increase development speed, I felt angry — didn’t he realize how important unit tests are? We didn’t have any other automatic tests, so UTs were our only hope to make the product stable and regression-free.

This decision seemed to be shortsighted for me. Also, he suggested we should stop writing documentation and convert code to less complex architecture (we could do this since we were at the beginning of the project).

Okay, I agree this will speed up development for a while, but we’ll have a lot of problems in the future. We’ll waste a lot of time fixing regression bugs, and the new architecture will be too simple when the project grows up! And how will we introduce new programmers to the project without a good readme?

We spent hours discussing how bad this decision is — and how much it will cost us in the future.

The project failed a few months later because it dramatically exceeded the budget.

Years later, I have to admit the truth: our team made a huge mistake. We thought about the future and forgot about the present. We completely ignored the circumstances — a small budget and the need to create an MVP in a short time.

It is great to make code which you can show to others and be proud of. But it is even better to finish projects successfully. After all, programming is not art.

3. I’ll Use “X” for This Project Because I Know It

In my previous company, we created every project with the same tech stack: Symfony and Angular. Why? Is Symfony the best backend framework? Nope. Maybe Angular is the only way to create a modern frontend? Nope. We always chose that set of technologies because we didn’t know others as well as these. That was our comfort zone, but is it wrong to select well-known technologies for new projects? It depends.

In many cases, your next project is more or less similar to previous ones. It would make no sense to spend a lot of time learning new tech since you already have proven solutions. But sometimes, it can be the wrong decision to make.

I remember the project where a well working WebSocket was the most important requirement. What did we choose to create our backend? Symfony, of course. Maybe today it is easier to create WS in PHP, but those days it was a nightmare. We spent a lot of time making it work. I mean A LOT. We were aware of how much time (and money) it will cost to build WS based on PHP, but we threw away the idea to use Node. Why? I really don’t know. In Node, we would build API 10x faster but that wasn’t our team’s tech stack.

I’m really happy that programmers in my current team are more open-minded than I was. Last week we decided to completely switch the technology used to build part of our system. I'm sure this decision will save us a lot of time, even if it means learning some things from scratch.

4. My Product Owner/Manager Is Wrong, I Would Do It Better

When I was working as a programmer, my relation with the product manager was… tough. Whenever he was telling me about new changes in task scope, I was like:

Why can’t you just do your job and define the scope before I start working?! Is it so difficult to decide in advance how that feature should work?

That was so naive, but I really thought it was easy. Now I fully understand how challenging can be to plan every detail of the project. You have to take into consideration the limitations of the technology and budget (which are the same thing actually), you have to think about users who will use your product, you cannot forget about business and marketing requirements. Sometimes, some of the requirements aren’t known at the beginning; sometimes, business circumstances change, and sometimes you have to build something first to figure out it can be done better.

Another thing — product managers can make mistakes. This is as simple as that . Programmers make bugs, PMs also. It is so obvious when I think about it now. I would be a better programmer if I realized that before. Instead of trying to show how wrong they are, I should focus on finding solutions.

It is ironic and sad, but at some point, I forgot that I and managers have the same goal — make a great product. They just had a lot wider knowledge than me about budget, business circumstances, requirements from the client-side, deadlines, and priorities. That’s why I didn’t understand some of their decisions.

For some of you, those four things may be obvious. If you’re working in a great, organized agile team with a good leader, and you have in mind the basic rules of UX — I’m really glad. I assume you can be a much better programmer than I was. Because “be a good programmer” isn’t only about technical skills. It is even more important to understand what is the value you can bring to the company and how to do it. Here is how I understand the senior developer term now:

1 John

The word wisdom is met in the Bible many times. It is always said that we all need it. But recently I've found an chapter that explains that there are two kinds of wisdom. It is in the book of James ( Jesus's brother ), chapter 3 - verses 13 to 18.

Two kinds of wisdom

In verse 17, it is described the kind of wisdom that are coming from heavens:"But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere."

Wisdom that is coming from God

<ul><li>pure - spiritual integrity and moral sincerity.&nbsp;</li><li>peace-loving - who loves or procures peace</li><li>considerate - such a person will submit to all kinds of abuse and difficulties with an attitude of gentle humility, politeness, patience, without any thought of hatred or revenge.&nbsp;( cf. Matthew 5:10-11 )</li><li>submissive - a person capable of receiving a teaching kindly and who willingly submits to discipline or legal and moral norms.&nbsp;In the case of Christians, it is a matter of conforming to divine standards ( cf. Matthew 5:3-5 ).</li><li>full of mercy - The gift of compassion for those who suffer physical pain and deprivation and the ability to forgive quickly ( cf. Matthew 5:7)</li><li>impartial and sincere - a person who is consistent, persevering, fully devoted to his commitments and beliefs and who does not make unjust distinctions between people ( cf. James 2:1-13)</li></ul>

Let‘s break it down to what each of its attributes mean

"But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic." - James 3:14‭-‬15

A wisdom that it's coming from the flesh

The egocentric wisdom that is consumed by personal ambition does not come from God.&nbsp;It is:<ul><li>earthly - limited to the earth</li><li>unspiritual - characterized by human character, fragility, an unsanctified heart</li><li>demonic - generated by satanic forces</li></ul>How this manifests itself, we find answer in verse 14.<ul><li>&nbsp;bitter envy -&gt; attitude of harshness &amp; resentment towards others</li><li>selfish ambition -&gt; gives rise to rivalry and dissent</li></ul>
