Gujaratis, mainly Patels, own a staggering 42% of all hotels and motels in the country, with a combined worth of more than 40 billion dollars Famously called the 'Patel Motel Cartel, they've taken over the US hospitality sector in the past few decades, owning 22K of the 53K hotels and motels. But how did this happen? Let's look at their story It all started in 1942, when an immigrant named Kanjibhai Desai took over a 32 room motel in Sacramento, California from a Japanese owner who was being evicted to a WW2 camp Desai ran a successful establishment, and always kept his doors open to new immigrants from Gujarat. He also encouraged them to enter the hospitality business It was the perfect business for them. Fluent English isn't required to run a motel, thus being suitable for 1st gen immigrants. And the business came with a house, so they didn't have to buy a separate one What also helped Gujaratis setup their business was the trust they had. They would give each other handshake loans- no collateral, no payment schedule, just pay when you can Once a family purchased a motel, they didn't require any extra staff. HOW GLOBAL INFLATION IS AFFECTING INDIA The US is facing unprecedented inflation that harkens back to the stagflation days of the 1970s. But how is this affecting India? The US has an inflation rate of 6.2.% That may Seem like a lot for a country like the US as the US Federal Reserve keeps its inflation targets at 2%. But it isn't much for India as we have over the past few years seen such inflation. The US inflation is being caused by a rapid US economic recovery accelerated by stimulus measures, that has increased demand. On the other hand, the global supply chain still hasn't recovered from COVID so supply isn't able to keep up. In India, the RBI has historically been comfortable with inflation between 2-6%. India isn't affected much by the current global inflation as it was already facing high inflation even before the pandemic. This is the reason why the RBI has not lowered interest rates since May of last year as part of stimulus measures, as low interest rates would lead to more liquidity leading to even more inflation. Such measures have brought inflation to reasonable levels in India and have ensured that ihe global inflation hasn't hit India as hard. But as our economy opens up and demand increases, there is the risk of inflation spiralling out of control again. Additionally, even as global inflation rises rapidly, the US Federal Reserve might be compelled to increase its interest rates. This would make it harder for firms to raise money from foreign investors, leading to a major stock market correction which would end the boom enjoyed by the Indian stock market till now.
