HOW GLOBAL INFLATION IS AFFECTING INDIA The US is facing unprecedented inflation that harkens back to the stagflation days of the 1970s. But how is this affecting India? The US has an inflation rate of 6.2.% That may Seem like a lot for a country like the US as the US Federal Reserve keeps its inflation targets at 2%. But it isn't much for India as we have over the past few years seen such inflation. The US inflation is being caused by a rapid US economic recovery accelerated by stimulus measures, that has increased demand. On the other hand, the global supply chain still hasn't recovered from COVID so supply isn't able to keep up. In India, the RBI has historically been comfortable with inflation between 2-6%. India isn't affected much by the current global inflation as it was already facing high inflation even before the pandemic. This is the reason why the RBI has not lowered interest rates since May of last year as part of stimulus measures, as low interest rates would lead to more liquidity leading to even more inflation. Such measures have brought inflation to reasonable levels in India and have ensured that ihe global inflation hasn't hit India as hard. But as our economy opens up and demand increases, there is the risk of inflation spiralling out of control again. Additionally, even as global inflation rises rapidly, the US Federal Reserve might be compelled to increase its interest rates. This would make it harder for firms to raise money from foreign investors, leading to a major stock market correction which would end the boom enjoyed by the Indian stock market till now.
