Free Yourself From Guilt

If you're currently taking a rest day from working out don't be hard on yourself because it only means that there are some things that you have to reevaluate -- maybe you have to find a more balanced workout plan or maybe you need to take care of things in your personal life.

Regardless of the reason for your rest day, missing one day of a workout is a trivial problem!

The Zeigarnik Effect

The Zeigarnik effect is our tendency to remember incomplete or interrupted tasks easier than completed tasks.

At first, the Zeigarnik Effect seems handy: We remember the things we still need to do.

  • But each incomplete task divides your focus, making it harder to concentrate on what is in front of you.
  • Another problem is that even if we can physically disconnect from work, our unfinished tasks will filter through to our family dinners, vacations, weekends and sleep.

... is that they can be intimidating. They can paralyze you into inaction.

The big picture can be overwhelming, but in little parts, it seems achievable. Every step forward brings you closer to a goal. Consistent action coupled with time guarantees lasting progress.

Procrastination has a price. It's related to:
  • Depression
  • Irrational beliefs
  • Low self-esteem
  • Anxiety
  • Stress
Productive Procrastination

"For creativity, what you really need is looser, less focused thinking - and that seems to come with slight engagement in an undemanding task."

This is backed by a brand-new study presented by Jihae Shin and Adam Grant where their results showed that people who took a few short breaks tended to come up with far more creative ideas than low- and high- procrastinators.

Thus strengthening the idea that moderate levels of distraction can unleash innovative thinking.
