Mastering the art of wearing many hats

Starting from the center of your mind map, ask yourself."What am I responsible for?"For Elena, her first level nodes are:<ul><li>Myself</li><li>My team</li><li>Business impact</li><li>Relationships with other Engineering</li><li>Managers</li><li>Technical excellence of my team's products</li></ul>

Step 1: The center of it all 

Next, you can work on expanding your mind map. Breaking down each node will allow you to take a deeper look at where your skill gaps are and will also help you visualize the breadth of your responsibilities.Add in the high-level responsibilities for all areas, and then keep narrowing down your sub-nodes one level at a time. For example, this is how Elena broke down - "my team":<ul><li>Team performance</li><li>Employee journey</li><li>Team health</li></ul>Continue to narrow down your nodes as needed. After you have narrowed all nodes down further, you can begin to assess how things are going and where there are areas for growth.

Step 2: Breaking it down

Take a look at your final nodes and evaluate your confidence in each responsibility on a scale of 1 to 10. Then ask yourself, "What can support me to keep this area successful?" The answer to this question may be:<ul><li>Processes</li><li>Tools</li><li>Techniques</li><li>Questions</li><li>People/Mentors</li></ul>Jot down each support element next to the node. You may even notice gaps for some of your nodes-these are great places to ask yourself how you can learn more and find new sources of support.Come back to add to your mind map over time as you learn about new ways to grow!

Step 3: Evaluate the supporting elements

You should now have a wide overview of all of your responsibilities and processes.For any areas you rated below a 6, ask yourself,"What next steps can I take to get more support?"Come back once a month and re-rate each area to see how well you've been able to improve or where you need to keep your focus.

Step 4: Action items

Over time, you may find that your mind map begins to change! Maybe your team becomes responsible for a new project, or you get promoted. You can redo and adjust your mind map as you like, but try to do this exercise at least once per quarter!Your mind map can also be a great way to support your team. In a 1:1 you could ask each team member to do this mind map exercise. Then, you can have a look at where you overlap, how best you can support them, and where you might need to outsource support in areas where there are gaps.

The question is: Can you see the pattern there? Can you figure out a way for a new input which we haven't seen? - to understand what the output will be from that new input.So we've got a million inputs with their output. So, we're trying to create some patterns , some rule that'll take those inputs those million training inputs which we know about to the correct million outputs.

I've basically just go recursive improvement on schedule, with feedback loop. Did this make it go faster? OK. If it didn't, we're going to need to fix it.

It would be an incredible adventure. And life needs to be more than just solving every day problems. You need to wake up and be excited about the future.

The extreme difficulty of scaling production of new technology is not well understood.

The answer was we thought it could be done.

Falcon One is going to be the lowest cost per flight to orbit of any production rocket.I think the reason it’s cheaper is, first of all, we are a private entity and we have a very lean system here. What we have been able to do here at SpaceX is to cherry-pick, you know, the top one or two percent and give them, you know, capital to execute well and a clear mission, which is low cost, reliable access to space, and no other constraints.Well, I have tried to learn as much as possible from prior attempts.

I think we’ve got the risks pretty well characterized. I think we are at least avoiding the mistakes that have been made in the past.

I want to be able to make sure that we have enough capital to survive at least three consecutive failures.

I like to be involved in things that change the world. The Internet did, and space will probably be more responsible for changing the world than anything else. If humanity can expand beyond the Earth, obviously that's where the future is.

Starting and growing a business is as much about the innovation, drive and determination of the people who do it as it is about the product they sell.

My approach is simply to seek out very talented people, ensure that the environment at SpaceX is as motivating & enjoyable as possible and establish clear & measurable objectives.

Rocket engineering is not like ditch digging. With ditch digging you can get 100 people and dig a ditch, and you will dig it a hundred times as faster if you get 100 people versus one. With rockets, you have to solve the problem of a particular level of difficulty; one person who can solve the problem is worth an infinite number of people who can’t.

I think it is a mistake to hire huge numbers of people to get a complicated job done. Numbers will never compensate for talent in getting the right answer (two people who don't know something are no better than one), will tend to slow down progress, and will make the task incredibly expensive.

If the design takes a long time to build, it's the wrong design. This is the fundamental thing. Over and over, the tendency is to complicate things. And I have another thing which is, the best part is no part. The best process is no process. It weighs nothing, costs nothing, can't go wrong. So, as obvious as that sounds, the best part is no part. The thing I'm most impressed with, when I have the design meetings at SpaceX, is:"What did you undesign?"  Undesigning is the best thing. Just delete it. That's the best thing.

Possibly, the most common error of a smart engineer is to optimize something that should not exist.

Everything works in PowerPoint; but if you have the physical item or some demonstration software, that's much more convincing to people than a PowerPoint presentation or a business plan.

There need to be things that inspire you, that make you glad to wake up in the morning and be part of humanity.

When you grow up you tend to get told that the world is the way it is and your life is just to live your life inside the world. Try not to bash into the walls too much. Try to have a nice family, have fun, save a little money.That's a very limited life. Life can be much broader once you discover one simple fact: Everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you and you can change it, you can influence it, you can build your own things that other people can use.

We live in an information economy. The problem is that information's usually impossible to get, at least in the right place, at the right time.

Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn't really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while. That's because they were able to connect experiences they've had and synthesize new things. And the reason they were able to do that was that they've had more experiences or they have thought more about their experiences than other people...

A lot of people in our industry haven't had very diverse experiences. So they don't have enough dots to connect, and they end up with very linear solutions without a broad perspective on the problem. The broader one's understanding of the human experience, the better design we will have.

I found that there were these incredibly great people at doing certain things, and that you couldn't replace one of these people with 50 average people. They could just do things that no number of average people could do.

Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. ﻿Everything else is secondary.

I’m convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You’ve got to find what you love. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking. Don’t settle.
