When we tell people to do their jobs, we get workers. When we trust people to get the job done, we get leaders.

Working hard for something we do not care about is called stress, working hard for something we love is called passion.

Passion alone can't cut it. For passion to survive it needs structure. A why without how has little probability of success.

There are many ways to motivate people to do things, but loyalty comes from the ability to inspire people. Only when the WHY is clear and when people believe what you believe can a true loyal relationship develop.

The role of a leader is not to come up with all the great ideas. The role of a leader is to create an environment in which great ideas can happen.

Leadership requires two things: a vision of the world that does not yet exist and the ability to communicate it.

Great companies don’t hire skilled people and motivate them, they hire already motivated people and inspire them. People are either motivated or they are not. The WHY exists in the part of the brain that controls feelings and decision-making but not language. WHATs exist in the part of the brain that controls rational thought and language.

There are leaders and there are those who lead. Leaders hold a position of power or influence. Those who lead inspire us. Whether individuals or organizations, we follow those who lead not because we have to, but because we want to. We follow those who lead not for them, but for ourselves.

Those who are inspired are willing to pay a premium or endure inconvenience, even personal suffering. Those who are able to inspire will create a following of people - supporters, voters, customers, workers - who act for the good of the whole not because they have to, but because they want to.

Any fool can criticize, condemn, and complain, but it takes character and self-control to be understanding and forgiving.

Appreciation can make a day, even change a life. Your willingness to put it into words is all that is necessary.

Ask yourself: What is the worst that can happen? Then prepare to accept it. Then proceed to improve on the worst.

The difference between appreciation and flattery? That is simple. One is sincere and the other insincere. One comes from the heart out, the other from the teeth out. One is unselfish, the other selfish. One is universally admired, the other universally condemned.

Instead of condemning people, let’s try to understand them. Let’s try to figure out why they do what they do. That’s a lot more profitable and intriguing than criticism; and it breeds sympathy, tolerance and kindness.

Anyone who takes the time to disagree with you is interested in the same things you are. Think of them as people who really want to help you and you turn your opponents into friends.

Remember that other people may be totally wrong. But they don’t think so. Don’t condemn them. Any fool can do that. Try to understand them. Only wise, tolerant, exceptional people even try to do that.

It isn’t what you have or who you are or where you are or what you are doing that makes you happy or unhappy. It is what you think about it.

Life is suffering. That’s clear. There is no more basic, irrefutable truth. It’s basically what defines the game. But there’s a lot of games. Playing isn’t so bad, if you can play these games with other people. After all, we’re social animals. And there’s meaning in the genuine interactions with other people.

A lobster only appears stable and secure because it moves forward or retreats, and mostly stays out of combat. But if it has to fight, it’s all fight and no flight.
