System design questions can often be as general as “How would you design Product X?”“Oh, you mean what would be the best way to design a product that has had hundreds of software engineers working on it for a decade? Sure, let me answer that in 45 minutes or less!”

In the beginning we all get the feeling that System Design is a huge subject to comprehend, which pretty much is true. The secret for this type of intreviews is to understand as much as possible what are the expectations of your recruiter and what will be the structure of the interview.Being such a vast subject, there are a lot of approaches for this type of interviews. As a matter of fact, I already had 3 of them and each one was different from the rest. By far. And none of them matched with that the online sources were covering. This is why is important to understand their expectations.

So many companies, so many customs

Prior to presenting the steps you should follow once the interview begins, there are some qualilties that will help you leave a better impresion to the interviewer:<ol><li>Honesty</li><li>Confidence </li><li>Willingness to learn</li></ol>This 3 strenghts combined shows the interviewer that you have the right mindset and you might be a good fit for the company.

Show this strengths

Clarify any ambiguity you have at the start of the interview. All your assumptions, speak them out loud and discuss them with your recruiter. Make sure you are on the same page, by asking:<ul><li> What is the goal of the system?</li><li>Who are the users of the system? What do they need it for? How are they going to use it?</li><li>What are the inputs and outputs of the system?</li></ul>

Step 1 - Understand the goals

Think and discuss what are the main features that you will cover. As you can imagine, describing the whole infrastructure in detail is impossible in 45 minutes. Some questions you might ask are:<ul><li>Do we want to discuss the end-to-end experience or just the API?</li><li>What clients do we want to support (mobile, web, etc)?</li><li>Do we require authentication? Analytics? Integrating with existing systems?</li></ul>

Step 2 - Establish the scope

Make sure that you know the data throughput and the number of users. This way you can create a software solution capable, scalable, without over-optimisations. Some questions to keep in mind during interview:<ul><li>What is the expected read-to-write ratio?</li><li>How many concurrent requests should we expect?</li><li>What’s the average expected response time?</li><li>What’s the limit of the data we allow users to provide?</li></ul>

Step 3 — Design for the Right Scale

Once you have all the information collected from the previous steps, you can start actually designing the system. The best approach for this is to start by sketching all the parts that the solution is made out of. Once you have that done, you can take each part and provide more details, but make sure to not drill-down too much on a single subject.

Step 4 — Start High-Level, then Drill-Down

While interviewing, some companies will be oriented more on the architecture part, while others focus more on the DS&A optimisations. Coming back to Step 1, it's important to understand what are the expectations of your interviewer and try to deliver based on them. Keeping that in mind, try to start with a simple solution, the first one that you manage to come up with. Usually, while explaining out loud your solution, subconsciously, some neural connections are made and you might find optimisations down the line. Having a point to start, you can iterate and improve your solution.

Step 5 — Data Structures and Algorithms (DS&A)

At the end of the day, there is no perfect solution. And this is available for any system, no matter how big the company is. Each solution has their advantages and disadvantages. The important part is to be aware of them and each decision you make should be made taking into account the tradeoffs. Preseting your interviewer the possible drawbacks of your solution shows them that you are aware of the system limitations and that you took them into account.

Step 6 — Tradeoffs

<ul><li>What type of database would you use and why?</li><li>What caching solutions are out there? Which would you choose and why?</li><li>What frameworks can we use as infrastructure in your ecosystem of choice?</li></ul>

This article is recommended to be read having some prerequisites. Introduction

Tastypie is a  framework for Django that helps programmers to develop RESTful APIs on top of their already existing projects.

What is Tastypie

As a general rule, each group of endpoints is seen as a resource. When I say a group of endpoints I mean a collection of HTTP methods on a specific route (e.g. GET, POST and DELETE on /api/entity).These resources have a lot of features, which include allowing you to access the endpoint with specific HTTP methods, permitting access only if you are authenticated, paginating the results etc.

What is a Tastypie Resource

In Tastypie, there are 3 types of endpoints:<ol><li>list</li><li>detail</li><li>custom</li></ol>List endpoints return a list of objects (as the name implies) and it looks like `host_address/api/entity`. Detail endpoints return a single instance of an object and it looks similar to the list endpoint, except for the fact that it expects a path param, the ID of the object, to identify the instance that will be returned (e.g. `/api/entity/[id]`).Custom endpoints are routes made by developers to solve any use-cases different from the default ones. They don't have a specific format, offering devs more freedom.

Types of endpoints

Each endpoint needs a function to manipulate and return the data. But these functions have a standard format<ul><li>They have as parameters `self` (being a class method inside the resource), `request` (which is the `Request` instance of the client's API call</li><li>They expect the returned value to be a HttpResponse. For best-practice and convenience, there is a method called `create_response` that takes care of that. All you need to pass is the request and the object that you want to be included</li></ul>

Endpoint function structure

Now let's focus on what's the steps for a request to be fulfilled on a Tastypie endpoint.When a request is received from a client, Django checks for any existing routes inside `urlpatterns`, the variable with all the available routes inside the project.If a pattern was found, Django will call the associated view (function or class) with the following parameters:<ol><li>an instance of HttpRequest</li><li>extra params got from the URL</li></ol> If the URL didn't match any pattern, then Django will take care of it via an appropriate error handling view.

Routing a request

Once Django redirects the request to a Tastypie resource, it checks for the available URLs and lets Tastypie do the rest.  Assuming the URL is`host-domain/api/v1/entity/` (which is a list view):If the view was matched, `Resource.wrap_view('dispatch_list')` is called. The wrap_view method inside the Resource takes care of basic error handling and serialisation for the errors. The 'dispatch_list' parameter means that Resource.dispatch_list will be called next (a thin wrapper around the dispatch method).

Handling a request inside Tastypie

The dispatch method makes sure the followings are fulfilled:<ul><li>the HTTP Method inside the request is allowed in the resource</li><li>the resource has a method that can handle the request (e.g. get_list, get_detail, get_custom_endpoint)</li><li>the user is authenticated</li><li>the user did not exceed their throttle</li></ul>

Resource.dispatch method

The response is generated using the specific class method of the resource. If it's a default endpoint, the methods look like [HTTP_method]_[view_type] (e.g. get_list, post_detail) and if it's a custom endpoint, the method's name is the defined route for the endpoint (e.g. add_more_entries)

The following actions will be done when calling the get_list:<ol><li>All the available objects are fetched via `Resource.obj_get_list`</li><li>Objects are sorted via `Resource.apply_sorting` and paginated with the built-in Paginator</li><li>the data will be dehydrated, meaning Tastypie will keep only the allowed fields</li><li>`Resource.create_response` is called, which serializes the data in the proper format and returns a HttpResponse object with the data</li></ol>Observation: For POST/PUT, there will be an extra step, the hydrate cycle, that will take the request payload and convert it in raw data, for DB storage

Generating the response for `get_list`

Once the Tastypie returned the HttpResponse object, Django will send it to the client which made the request.As a conclusion, you can consider Tastypie endpoints some Django views which return processed data in standardized formats (or HTTP errors, based on the case).

The new update comes with support for React 18, which is starting to become stable. Some new interesting features from React 18 would be Suspense, APIs like startTransition and a new streaming API for server rendering with support for React.lazy

React Server Components allow us to render everything on the server, including the component themselves. This is completely different from SSR which you pre-generate HTML on the server. With these components, there won't be any client-side JS needed => faster rendering.  To make this kind of components, all you have to do is to name the file Filename.server.js.

This new Next.js version includes experimental support for importing ES Modules through URLs, no install or separate build. You just need to declare the list of allowed URLs inside the next.config.js inside the experimental field, at urlImports. Any CDN that serves ES modules will work, including tools like Framer: Skypack, esm.sh, jsDelivr, JSPM, unpkg.

Things to consider when having offline flow

When back online, you should sync the server with the offline actions. To do so, you should maintain a queue with all the API requests, for executing when the connection will be restored. This queue should be persisted in redux, to remain after several offline sessions

To implement the concepts presented above, you need some help from libraries like Redux-Persist and Netinfo. Redux-Persist will help when launching the app, to populate the Redux with data from the previous session, checking the black and white lists. Netinfo can be used to check the status of the network connection.

The Architecture

When trying to make a POST, the local state should be updated and Redux should check the internet connection, to see if should make the api request or add it to the queue. Notice: The modified data should be persisted, so there won't be any discrepancies between sessions

If there is no internet connection, the data should be extracted from the local storage. Otherwise, a fetch request will be made, including a timestamp, with the last sync with the server. The server will than reply with the updated data and the timestamp will be updated, representing a checkpoint.
