Addiction Recovery In The 21st Century

Addiction Recovery In The 21st Century

It's been 30,103 days or 80 years, 4 months and 30 days since a wannabe stock broker and a proctologist met in a fundamentalist christian cult in an effort to help one another stay sober after decades of alcohol abuse. Since that day, known as Founder's Day for AA, there has been a mountain of research and advancement in the field of addiction recovery. Today one of the things we know is that labels such as "addict" or "alcoholic" are harmful and disempowering. The 12 step fellowships admit to a "success rate" of 5 to 10%, not very inspiring. Not Powerless

Personal powerlessness over substances as well as life itself is a central tenet of 12 step treatment along with admission of unmanageability of one's life. While Substance Use Disorders (SUDS's) can certainly lead to one's life becoming unmanageable, no human being without severe neurological impairment can ever be powerless over inert substance. SUD's are the result of many factors including socio-economic, childhood abuse, emotional disorders and an almost unlimited continuum of other factors. The idea that people are born with addictions is wrong and dangerous.
