What is Consciousness?

Once a great physicist said -

"Consciousness cannot be accounted for in physical terms. For consciousness is absolutely fundamental. It cannot be accounted for in terms of anything else".

Is consciousness really fundamental? 

I am conscious, you are conscious. But what we are ?

Why do the billions and billions of molecules of the universe come together and create a conscious being which is you and me?

Why millions of years of evolution has made you and me ?

All these questions are so fascinating but still no scientifically precise answer to all and it's still a mystery.
