MIG welding stands for Metal Inert Gas welding (inert).
An inert gas (rare gas) is e.g. Argon or Argon + Helium. Its task is to protect the welding deposit, the melting wire electrode and the arc against the oxidising effects of oxygen in the air. Application: in nonferrous metals.
