5 tips to overcome Designer's Block

5 tips to overcome Designer's Block

No matter how experienced or talented you are, we have all experienced times when we were unable to concentrate on our work or when we simply did not feel like working. Sometimes, no matter how hard we try, we just can’t come up with anything original, and it demotivates us.

This is a symptom of a designer’s or creative block. When your job relies on your ability to think creatively and provide the best solutions, nothing is more frustrating than hitting a creative block in the middle of an urgent project.

But why do we face creative blocks?

First, we need to understand that it is natural to encounter creative blocks. We face creative blocks because we are humans, and sometimes our brains just need a small break to recharge.

A few other reasons to consider are…

  • Feeling overwhelmed or pressured
  • Being too focused on perfection
  • Not believing in one’s own talents
  • Thinking one’s ideas aren’t good
  • Or a project deadline is coming up

However, here are the 5 tips to overcome creative blocks

1. Identify the cause

1. Identify the cause

Bring out the analytical designer in you and ask yourself these questions:

  • What is the end goal of my project?
  • What are the potential obstacles?
  • What do I need to do to get started?

Once you find answers to these questions, hopefully, you will have more clarity to continue to the next step.

If you’ve tried everything and nothing is working, don’t force it. In order to refocus your thoughts, it’s fine to take a break. I prefer to just walk away. Get distracted by something else and let the ideas come back to me naturally!
