Paget's disease

Paget's disease

Paget's disease is a disruption of normal bone renewal cycle. It weakens and possibly deforms a bone.

Speaking of bone renewal cycle, there are 2 cells responsible for this outcome:

  • osteoclasts – it absorbs old bone
  • osteoblasts – it makes new bone

In Paget's disease however, there is an anomally in osteoclast cells where it absorbs bone at a much faster rate than normal.

The osteoblasts then try to produce new bone more quickly, but the new bone is larger and weaker than normal.

There are no possible reason for this yet but, some experts say that it might be the cause of genetics (e.g. lineage)

  • bisphosphonate medication – medicines that help control bone regeneration
  • painkillers – usually over-the-counter painkillers such as paracetamol and ibuprofen
  • supportive therapies – including physiotherapy, occupational therapy and devices such as walking sticks or shoe inserts
  • surgery – this may be needed if further problems develop, such as fractures, deformities or severe joint damage
  • Getting enough calcium and vitamin D. Take some supplements if needed.

Further problems caused by Paget's disease of bone

Paget's disease can further disrupt any normal structure of your bones. The fragile bones break more easily than normal. At times, it will enlarge then the bones turn misshapen.

Some patients even have a permanent hearing loss if the skull is affected. Also, in some parts of your organ, your heart can have a heart attack when there is a problem in the sternum (rib).

Take note that there is a high possibility that Paget's disease can turn into cancer.
