A saving grace is something positive in an otherwise bad situation.When I was 25 years old I moved to London, England, and ran out of money. I used a dating website in order to eat dinner. The dating website was my "saving grace" even if for a brief period of time.&nbsp;Sometimes you need a saving grace in a desperate time calling for creativity to survive.

Here we go. In 2002, at the plucky age of twenty-five, I moved to London, England, with four thousand Canadian dollars. Given the horrid exchange rate, my money ran out fast. I moved into a dingy flat in Fulham with two younger girls who, I later found out, weren’t paying rent, and we were all about to be evicted. To top off a depressing situation, I sought employment, and no promising prospects were on the horizon. A huge part of me didn’t want to return to Ontario because I would prove to my parents and everyone else that they were right. My bruised ego didn’t want to admit I was a fool for moving to London in the dead of winter without a job or a plan. And with two hundred dollars Canadian left to my name, if I didn’t find employment, I’d become homeless. To top it off, I was hungry, near ravenous.Enter the really embarrassing part. During that time, <a href="https://www.lavalife.com/" rel="noopener nofollow" dir="ltr">Lavalife</a> was a prevalent (Canadian) dating website, also well known in London. From my experience, I find British men to be gentlemen. Through this lens, I decided to seek dates through Lavalife — to eat. That’s right. I used men for pub meals to sustain myself until I became employed. I was able to eat one relatively decent meal a day from my dates, just enough for a mediocre existence. And to be clear, no “favors” for food were granted in return.Thankfully, my time in the Lava dating pool was brief; within a matter of a month, I found a decent career, was able to grocery shop and found a gorgeous room in a beautiful house. However, my experience proved that desperate times called for immediate creativity to survive.
