<p><em>Humans</em> share <strong>98.8%</strong> of their DNA with <em>chimpanzees</em>. Because gene expression can be turned up or down-similar to the volume on your TV-the same gene can be turned to "<strong>high</strong>" in a human and "<strong>low</strong>" in a chimp. The human <strong>brain</strong> is larger and smarter than that of <em>chimps</em> and <em>gorillas</em> because, although we all have the same genes in the same brain region, these genes are expressed in different "<strong>volumes</strong>" or amounts. It is these differences that affect brain development and function.</p>

Humans and chimps share a surprising 98.8 percent of their DNA. How can we be so similar--and yet so different?</p><h4>So Much Alike...</h4><p>Human and chimp DNA is so similar because the two species are so closely related. Humans, chimps and bonobos descended from a single ancestor species that lived six or seven million years ago. As humans and chimps gradually evolved from a common ancestor, their DNA, passed from generation to generation, changed too. But chimps don't get infected by the malaria parasite&nbsp;<em dir="ltr">Plasmodium falciparum</em>, which a mosquito can transmit through its bite into human blood. A small DNA difference makes human red blood cells vulnerable to this parasite, while chimp blood cells are resistant.</p><div dir="ltr">
