Veer Kunwar Singh was born on 13 November 1777 in Jagdishpur village in Bhojpur district of Bihar. He was from the Ujjain branch of Rajputs. His father Babu Sahabzada Singh was one of the descendants of the famous ruler Bhoj. His mother's name was Pancharatna Kunwar.
Kunwar Singh was powerful and intelligent since childhood, he was very adept in conducting guerilla warfare. After Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Kunwar Singh was the only warrior who knew gorilla attacks well. In this guerrilla war, he started pricking the British a lot.

He had brought his last war in Shivpuri ambush, Kunwar Singh was crossing the Ganges river at night from Shivpuri ambush in Ballia with his army, when the British general Douglas was chasing him with a huge army, when the British started firing blindly. The bullet went through Kunwar Singh's hand in one hand, which he considered as an insult, he cut off one of his arms and offered it to Ganga Maiya. Kunwar Singh said in his fervent voice, "O Ganga Maiya! Accept this uninspiring gift of your beloved."
