The problem of looking for a “Life Purpose”

The problem itself is the concept of “life purpose”; the idea that we were each born for some higher purpose and its our mission to find it. Here’s de truth; we exist on this earth for some undetermined period of time. During that period of time we do things. Some of these things are important. Some of them are not. And those important things give our lifes meaning and happiness. The unimportant ones basically just kill time.

So, when people say “What should i do with my life?” or “What’s my life purpose?”, what they’re actually asking is: what can i do with my time that is important?

Finding Life Purpose (part 1)

Here are some ridiculous yet though-provoking questions that will help you find what’s important to you in life:

  1. what’s true about you today that would make your 8-year-old self cry?

Something about the social pressures of adolescence/professional pressures of young adulthood squeezes the passion out of us. We’re taught that the only reason to do something is if we’re somehow rewarded for it. But, remember that kid u used to be that would spend hours doing a particular activity, like painting, or singing? Not because you wanted to impress someone, but for the sheer joy of it… and then, u stopped

Finding Life Purpose (part 2)

For some reason, you stopped doing that thing you loved so much. We all have a tendency to loose touch with what we loved as a child. If your 8-year-old self asked you “Why did you stop? Why dont you do this anymore?”, you would answer “Because im not good at it”, “Because you cant make money from it”, or “Because people would think its weird”. Not only you would be wrong, but that 8-year-old version of you would have started crying, because he/she doesn’t care about money, what other people think… He/she just wanted to play, have fun. And that’s where passion begins: with a sense of play.

Finding A Life Purpose (part 3)

Gun to your head. If you had to leave the house all day, every day, where would you go and what would you do?

Discovering what you’re passionate about is a trial-by-fire process. None of us know exactly how we feel about an activity until we get to do it. The problem is that we get deeply into our routines, our daily lifes are always the same because we dont experiment things that are out of our comfort zone.

What most people dont understand is that passion is a result of action, not because of it.

So, ask yourself: if you were forced to leave your house every day, how would you occupy yourself?

Finding Life Purpose (part 4)

If you were going to die one year from today, what would you do and how do you want to be remembered?

Ultimately, death is the only thing that gives us perspective on the value of our lifes. Because its only by imagining your non-existence that you get a sense of what is most important about your existence. What is your legacy going to be? What are the stories that people are going to tell when you are gone? What is your obituary going to say? Is there anything to say at all? If not, what would you want it to say? How can you start working towards that today?
