An Awakened World

Hyper-consumerism is no longer the only way to live, as millions of people around the world prefer a different life where they buy new experiences instead of products.

Experiences may be better than mindless consumerism, but experiences are still desires, and reality is beyond the pursuit of all kinds of desire.

Stoics practiced ‘The Last Time’ meditation to experience life to the fullest. It is a mindset that makes us enjoy our experiences more.

  • At random times during the day, imagine that the experience you are having is for the last time.
  • If you are having coffee, pretend that it is the last time you will be able to taste coffee. If you are having dinner with your parents, imagine that this is the last time you will ever meet them.
  • Imagining that the experience will never occur again is a way to be more appreciative and to enjoy it at a different level.

“You have to understand that it is your attempt to get special experiences from life that makes you miss the actual experience of life. Life is not something you get; it’s something you experience.”

The pursuit of change is ingrained in us, as most of us want to change our clothes, car, house etc., just to attain something better.

We can have an alternative view about our present life, believing that change is optional and we are good and happy with how life is right now.

It is a good way to live in contentment with things we cannot change.

Experiences are desires

When you’re trying hard to experience something special in life, you’re actually chasing your desires without being aware of them.

The funny thing is when you try hard to get special experiences from life, you miss whatever is right in front of you.

  • Life is not about the things you get to experience, it’s something you experience regardless of what you do.

That means every experience is worth it. Whether it’s something you desired or not.

Make yourself accountable for what you do or don’t do. You don’t have to do things to prove something to others.

Make a To-Do list with your goals, intentions and proposed actions, and try to stick to it.

  1. Past: When you’re focused on the past, you’re often paralyzed by what has happened to you. You either wish your life was like the “good old days” or you wish certain things didn’t happen.
  2. Present: When you’re primarily focused on the present, you either want instant gratification or enjoyment of what’s in front of you. No thought of the past or the future.
  3. Future: A future-oriented person is someone who eats healthy food, gets good grades in school, doesn’t smoke, drink, and is always working towards a future outcome.
