Challenging yourself

The idea of challenging yourself is one of the pillars of personal development.

By that, you grow as a person and you learn to trust yourself more, which greatly increases your likelihood of having happiness and success in life.

Ways of challenging yourself

The best ones in my view are the ones that meet 3 fundamental conditions:

  1. They take you out of your comfort zone without putting you in serious danger
  2. They provide you an intense, accelerated learning experience
  3. They help you develop skills and attitudes that are highly valuable to you in life.

Meeting New People

This stimulates your social skills to grow

You learn how to talk with all sorts of people and to keep conversations flowing. You  also get better at reading social cues, and you become more skilled at navigating complex social situations.

Travelling

Travelling takes you out of the environment you’re familiar with, and throws you into the unfamiliar.

You get exposed to new places, new cultures, new customs, and of course, new people. And in this sea of novelty, you adapt and you grow.

Physical Exercise

It's a good way to push yourself out of your comfort zone.

Through regular exercise, not only that you train your body and you develop your strength, speed, endurance and so on, but you also train your mind. You develop willpower, perseverance, determination  and confidence.

Aiming High in Your Career

By setting and pursing such goals, you will be forced to develop as a person.

You’ll need to study, to develop your expertise in your field, to innovate and to take calculated risks. All of this implies unbelievable self-growth.

False Beliefs About Self-Education

Despite having easy access to information, few people take full advantage of the opportunity we have for self-directed learning.

We still believe that in order to learn something, we need to be formally educated on it, when in fact we're able to educate ourselves.

Self-Education In The 21st Century

Self-education is the core skill for the 21st century.

Our ability to respond to changes in the landscape of work and technology will be dictated by how skilled self-educators we are, how well we can take full advantage of the information available to us to grow our skillset.

Stay Challenged

By staying challenged you do not slip into the dangerous comfort zone. You can stay challenged by:

  • Doing anything that you don't know how to do.
  • Doing more than you have time for.

This makes your brain cells work in creative ways for you to figure out new things and how to incorporate them into your life.

Big Goals

If your goals are mediocre and small, you will slip into distractions and routine work. It's always better to have an audacious goal.
