It is vital to approach cooperation as a potentially transformative encounter, not as a sacrifice.

There are three motivations behind our willingness to meaningfully cooperate:

1. A moral motivation that is tied to our values.
2. A relational motivation to start and maintain a satisfying personal relationship with somebody.
3. An economic motivation to enrich or avoid loss.

Research shows it is nearly impossible to support reliable cooperation.

We can encourage better cooperation by turning our attention to the possibility of new alliances. It encourages us to recognize the collective identity and efforts.
