Get 1% better every day

"When you start a new habit, it should take less than two minutes to do."Instead of trying to engineer a perfect habit from the start, do the easy thing on a more consistent basis. The more you ritualize the beginning of a process, the more likely it becomes that you can slip into the state of deep focus. Make it easy to start and the rest will follow.If the Two-Minute Rule feels forced, try this: do it for two minutes and then stop. Self-control is a short-term strategy, not a long-term one

The human brain evolved to prioritize immediate rewards over delayed rewards.Our preference for instant gratification reveals an important truth about success: because of how we are wired, most people will spend all day chasing quick hits of satisfaction. The road less traveled is the road of delayed gratification.Add a little bit of immediate pleasure to the habits that pay off in the long-run and a little bit of immediate pain to ones that don't. The vital thing in getting a habit to stick is to feel successful - even if it's in a small way.Example:<ul><li>Open a savings account and label it for something you want - maybe "Leather Jacket" or "Trip to Europe". Whenever you pass on a purchase, put the same amount of money in the account.</li></ul>

Living in a delayed-return environment

We are less likely to repeat a bad habit if it is painful or unsatisfying.Create a habit contract:<ul><li>A habit contract is a verbal or written agreement in which you state your commitment to a particular habit and the punishment that will occur if you don't follow through.</li><li>Then you find one or two people to act as your accountability partners and sign off on the contract with you.</li></ul>Make the costs of your bad habits public and painful.

Make it unsatisfying

Goals are good for setting a direction, but systems are best for making progress.<ol><li>Goals restrict your happiness. They create a "either-or" conflict: either you achieve your goal and are successful or you fail and you are a dissappointment.</li><li>The purpose of setting goals is to win the game. Forget about goals, focus on systems

Behaviour that is incongruent with the self will not last. You might start a habit because of motivation, but the only reason you'll stick with one is that it becomes part of your identity.The more pride you have in a particular aspect of your identity, the more motivated you will be to maintain the habits associated with it. If you are proud of how your hair looks, you'll develop all sorts of habits to care for and maintain it.Changing your identity is a two-step process:<ol><li>Decide the type of person you want to be (reader, musician, athlete, leader,...).</li><li>Prove it to yourself with small wins.</li></ol>Ask yourself: Who is the type of person who could get the outcome I want?

True behaviour change is identity change

Humans experience peak motivation when working on tasks that are right on the edge of their current abilities. Not too hard. Not too easy. Just manageable difficulty.The greateast threat to success is not failure but boredom. We get bored with habits because they stop delighting us. The outcome becomes expected.

The Goldilocks Rule

We tend to adopt habits that are praised and approved of by our culture because we have a strong desire to fit in and belong to the tribe.We tend to imitiate the habits of:<ol><li>The close (friends and familiy)</li><li>The many (the tribe)</li><li>The powerful (those with status and prestige)</li></ol>Surround yourself with people who have the habits you want to have yourself. People make a few small changes, fail to see a tangible result, and decide to stop. But in order to make a meaningful difference, habits need to to persist long enough to break through this plateau.If you find yourself struggling to build a good habit or break a bad one, it is not because you have lost your ability to improve.
