Before Einstein, time was this universal parameter. We all shared the same moment of time; the same moment of now that we could all agree on. But then Einstein came and he said, "Well, it's not that simple." And the major reason for this is that the speed of light is finite, and nothing can go faster than the speed of light- it's the same for all observers.

Time: It’s… Not That Simple

And this sounds like a really innocent assumption, but it has a truly fundamental consequence, which is fairly easy to understand actually. If you ask yourself whether you know if the screen in front of you is actually there right now, naively we would say, "Yes, of course it's there, I mean, I'm holding it my hand, or I see it directly in front of me." But, we just learned that the speed of light is finite, and nothing can go faster than the speed of light. So everything that we experience, everything that we see, we see it as it was a tiny little amount of time in the past.

Nothing Can Go Faster Than The Speed Of Light

And Einstein tried to construct a notion of "now" in this new theory, and he failed. So, imagine you're looking straight ahead, and there's a train going through to your line of sight, say, from the left to the right. And on the train, there's your friend, and let's call her Alice. Now, let's also imagine that at the exact moment that Alice, who's standing in the middle of the train, is looking straight at you, there are light flashes going off on both ends of the train. And the question is: Did these light flashes happen at the same time?

Now, if you want to answer this question looking at the train, that's pretty straightforward. There are those light flashes going off. They both come from sources that are the same distance from you. So of course you see them at the same time.

Did The Light Flashes Happen At The Same Time? Yes.

But how does the same thing look from Alice's perspective? The light flashes go off, but while the light travels towards her, she's moving towards one of the light sources and away from the other, so that one path of the light is shorter and the other one is longer. So her perspective, the light flash from the front of the train arrives earlier than the one from the back. So she would say, "No, they did not happen at the same time." And now the important point is that this is relativity. Neither of them is right, and neither of them is wrong. They both have an equally valid perspective.

Did The Light Flashes Happen At The Same Time? No.

And what do we conclude from this? Well, we conclude from this that there is no unambiguous notion to define what happens now: It depends on the observer. So they're both right. And if we follow this logic to its conclusion, then the outcome is that every moment could be now for someone. And that includes all moments in our past, and it also includes all moments in our future. So this impossibility to define one notion of now that we all agree on is called the 'relativity of simultaneity.'

Now Is In The Eye Of The Observer

The relativity of simultaneity is super important because it tells us that fundamentally, this experience of now that we all share is meaningless. So the mathematical framework that Einstein came up with to make sense of this absence of now and the finiteness of the speed of light and the relativity of simultaneity, is that he combined space with time to one common entity, which is called spacetime.

And more specifically, because the present moment has no fundamental significance, this entire spacetime exists in the present moment, and it's become known as the block universe. In the block universe, the past, the present, and the future exists in the same way. There's just no way that you can single out one particular time as special.T

There Is No One Particular Time That Is Special

So, the past in which a loved one of ours that has passed away is still alive exists the same way as this present moment. Now, there's another way to look at this idea that people who have sadly passed away do in some sense still exist- and it's because of the way that all the fundamental laws of nature that we know work. They don't destroy information.

Information Cannot Be Destroyed

The only thing that the fundamental laws of nature do is that they rearrange the matter and radiation and everything that's in the Universe; they just give you the rules for how to put them in different places with different velocities. But you can apply those rules forward and backward. And this means if you had a really, really good computer, you can in principle always find out what happened earlier.

The Rules Can Be Applied Forward And Backward

So in this sense, information cannot get destroyed. It can, however, become for practical purposes, impossible to retrieve. There are two cases that physicists have considered where information might get destroyed that have so far not been resolved: One of them is the information that falls into a black hole. We don't actually know what happens with it. And the other one is the mysterious measurement process in quantum mechanics, which is also an unresolved problem.

Information, However, Can Become Irretrievable

So if someone we knew passes away, then of course we all know that we can no longer communicate with this person. And that's because the information that made up their personality, it disperses into very subtle correlations in the remains of their body, which become entangled with all the particles around them. And slowly, slowly they spread into radiation that disperses throughout the solar system, and eventually throughout the entire Universe.

But this is a very anthropomorphic thing: It's very tied to our own existence, and who knows what's going to happen in a billion years or something to the nature of humans. Maybe there'll be some cosmic consciousnesses, which will also be spread out, and this information will become accessible again. For all we know about the fundamental laws of nature, about Einstein's theories, and about the way that our current theories work, it seems that our existence actually transcends the passage of time.

Information, Though, Can Become Accessible Again

There is something timeless about the information that makes up us and everything else in the Universe. And I think that's a really deep spiritual insight that we get directly from studying the foundations of physics. And I have to admit that I personally find it really hard to make intuitive sense of it. It's one way to look at the maths and say, "Okay, this is how it works." It's another thing entirely to make sense of this in your everyday life.But as a physicist, I trust the process of knowledge discovery that comes from using the scientific method, and so I take this seriously.

Freud notes that this principle has been fundamental in psychoanalytic theory but acknowledges that it fails to explain all forms of behavior, particularly those involving repetitive trauma or self-destructive tendencies.He introduces the concept that there might be forces beyond simple pleasure-seeking, suggesting that human behavior is more complex than the pleasure principle alone can explain.

Freud also identifies here the two primary sources of unpleasure:1. External Sources of UnpleasurePerceptional Unpleasure: This arises from external stimuli or environmental factors that are perceived as unpleasant or threatening. For example, loud noises, physical pain, or uncomfortable situations can lead to immediate distress.2. Internal Sources of UnpleasureInternal Psychic Unpleasure: This comes from internal psychological processes, such as unresolved conflicts, repressed emotions, or internalized aggression.

Freud delves in the idea of Traumatic Neurosis, a condition arising from severe shocks or accidents. The text highlights that the unresolved experiences is a reason of resurfacing of trauma in dreams including those from war, the repitition of dreams indicates a psychological fixation on the trauma.

Freud differentiates fear, apprehension, and fright as follows:Fear: This is a response to a specific, identifiable threat or danger. It involves a clear object or situation that causes anxiety.Apprehension: This refers to a general sense of anxiety or anticipation about a potential danger, even if the exact nature of the danger is unknown. It involves being prepared for a possible threat.Fright: This is a sudden and intense reaction to an unexpected danger or shock. It is characterized by surpriseHe also states traumatic neurosis is linked to the element of surprise in fright.

He also discuss The child's play It involves an eighteen-month-old boy who repeatedly plays a game where he makes objects disappear and then reappear. For example, he throws a wooden reel with a string over the side of his cot, making it "disappear," and then pulls it back out, greeting its reappearance with joy. This game reflects the child's attempt to cope with and master the experience of his mother leaving him, turning a potentially distressing event into a manageable play scenario. It demonstrates how children use games to process and gain control over their emotional experiences.

Psychoanalysis aimed to interpret unconscious material and uncover repressed thoughts. However, it became clear that this approach couldn't fully access all repressed content, leading to the discovery of Transference-neurosis (The phenomenon involves patients reliving or projecting unresolved past conflicts and emotion in therapy). Freud found that the resistance to uncovering repressed material stems from the ego's desire to avoid discomfort, not from the unconscious itself.

Repetition-compulsion, where individuals repeatedly reenact past experiences reveals a drive beyond the pleasure principle, compelling people to relive painful experiences. This concept highlights a primitive force in the psyche that seeks to confront and integrate unresolved past traumas extending to normal behaviors and phenomena like Shock dreams (refer to dreams that are vivid and distressing, often related to recent traumatic experiences) and children's play (reenacting scenarios from their own experiences or observations, including past conflicts or fears).

Freud explores the nature of consciousness and its role within the psychic apparatus, proposing that consciousness (system Bw.) functions as a specialized mechanism for processing external stimuli and internal feelings. It argues that consciousness is located at the boundary between the outer and inner worlds, similar to the cortical layer of the brain, and does not retain permanent traces of excitation (anything that triggers psychic apparatus) unlike other psychic systems (Memory).

It emphasizes the importance of the outer protective layer of living organisms, which shields deeper layers from overwhelming stimuli, and discusses how trauma disrupts this protective barrier, leading to an excessive influx of stimuli.This disruption challenges the pleasure principle and results in trauma-related dreams, which are seen as attempts to regain control over the traumatic experience rather than mere wish-fulfillment, revealing the underlying function of psychic apparatus beyond pleasure principle.

Thanatos (The Death Drive)He introduces the death drive (The thing beyond pleasure principle), which opposes the pleasure principle and represents an instinct towards aggression and self-destruction. This drive is a counter-current to the pleasure principle, pushing individuals toward a return to an inorganic state. He included to account potential explanation for behaviors that don't fit neatly into the pleasure principle framework.

Freud's passage examines how instincts and their management influence psychological processes and behaviors. Freud distinguishes between two types of mental processes: The Primary Process, which operates in the unconscious and is characterized by free-moving, unbound energy, and The Secondary Process, which governs conscious thought and is associated with bound or regulated energy.

Children: They often repeat experiences, both pleasant and unpleasant, to gain mastery and pleasure through re-enactment of these experiences. This repetition is a way for them to control and understand their impressions.In Adults and Analysis: In psychoanalysis, repetition compulsion can manifest as an attempt to relive past experiences, often without regard for pleasure or current needs. This repetition indicates repressed memories and instincts continue to influence behavior, showing that these instincts are not bound by the secondary process and remain active in their primary form.

Freud argues that instincts often aim to restore previous states rather than drive new development, reflecting a conservative nature. It contrasts with the evolutionary view, where external influence propel evolution. While some instincts preserve past condition, external changes advance evolution. Sexual instinct are vital for life and resist the conservative instinct seeking to return to earlier state or approach death. Freud also critiques the idea of an inherent drive towards perfection, suggesting that human development is about managing repressed instincts than pursuing an ideal state.

Freud explored instincts through a dualistic framework, initially distinguishing ego-instincts related to self-preservation from sexual instincts, but later integrating them by recognizing that ego-instincts also had libidinous components. This idea contrast with Carl Jung’s theory, which viewed libido as a general instinctive energy, creating a conflict with Freud’s dualistic model. In the biological context, he suggested that sexual instincts might enhance life by merging genetic material. Freud acknowledged the speculative nature of his theories and the possibility to revise his ideas.

He explores the interplay between life and death instincts, particularly in relation to sadism and masochism. Sadistic impulses are seen as displaced death-instincts directed towards others, while masochism represents a return of these instincts towards oneself.Freud also discusses sexual instincts and their role in life-renewal, using protozoa to suggest that sexual reproduction introduces new stimuli that support life. He refers to Plato’s myth of dual beings seeking reunion to hypothesize that sexual instincts stem from a primordial drive for union.

Freud acknowledges the speculative nature of his theories and the potential for future discoveries to challenge them. Despite uncertainties, he believes that exploring these ideas offers valuable psychological insights.

Beyond the Pleasure Principle

Meno a prominent figure from Thessaly, arrives in Athens and engages Socrates in a philosophical discussion. Meno is eager to understand whether virtue can be taught and begins by asking Socrates if he believes that virtue is teachable.

Introduction

Socrates responds by expressing his own uncertainty about the nature of virtue and its teachability. He admits that he has never encountered anyone who truly understands what virtue is. Socrates often seeks answers through rigorous questioning, but in this case, he is not sure of virtue's definition or whether it can be imparted through teaching.

Socrates' Response

Meno is surprised by Socrates' admission, as he and many others believe they understand what virtue is. Meno states that virtue differs depending on one's role: men are virtuous if they manage the city well, women if they manage the household effectively, and children if they exhibit appropriate behavior. Socrates challenges this view, arguing that virtue must be defined in a way that is universal and applicable to all people, regardless of their specific roles or circumstances. He uses the analogy of bees: while individual bees may differ, they are all bees because of their shared essence.

Universality Of Virtues

Meno agrees that there must be a single all encompassing meaning of virtue (universal definition) he says that Justice is virtue. But Socrates argues that Justice is not virtue, to make his point clear he says that roundness is a shape but it doesn't describe shape as a whole. Socrates asks Meno to provide a description of virtue that can be applied universally, but Meno refuses, suggesting that Socrates should answer himself. Socrates explains that everything has limits, using the concept of shapes as an example. He describes a solid shape as defined by its boundaries or limits.

"Justice Is Virtue" As Universal Definition

Socrates then asks Meno to describe virtue again after giving an example of the type of description he wants. Socrates answers by rephrasing Meno's question then challenges Meno with a fundamental question: if one does not know what virtue is, how can one search for it? which asserts that one cannot search for what one knows because one already possesses that knowledge, nor can one search for what one does not know because one does not know what to look for.

The Meno's Paradox

If you know something, you don't need to seek it out. If you already know the answer to a question, then there is no need to search for it because you already possess the knowledge.If you don't know something, you wouldn't know what to search for. If you don't know the answer, you wouldn't know what to look for, making the search for it pointless.

Socrates offers a resolution to this paradox by suggesting that learning is akin to recollection. According to Socrates, the soul is eternal and has knowledge of all things, so learning is a process of remembering what one already knows. To illustrate this, Socrates conducts a demonstration with a slave boy, asking him mathematical questions that he answers correctly despite having no prior instruction in geometry. Socrates argues that this demonstrates how knowledge is latent within individuals and can be drawn out through proper questioning.

Returning to the question of whether virtue can be taught, Socrates asserts that if virtue were a type of knowledge, it could theoretically be taught. He then introduces the idea of virtue having a benefits. if virtue is something beneficial, it must be knowledge, since only knowledge can consistently direct actions toward benefit rather than harm. Socrates discusses how qualities such as courage and moderation can be either beneficial or harmful depending on whether they are accompanied by wisdom or folly. Therefore, he concludes that virtue, being beneficial, must be a form of wisdom.

If we are good, we are beneficent, for all that is good is beneficial. Is that not so?

He finds that even respected individuals have children who are not virtuous, leading to the conclusion that there may be no effective teachers of virtue. This suggests that virtue may not be teachable in the conventional sense.

Socrates and Meno conclude that virtue might not be a form of knowledge that can be taught. Instead, virtue may be related to having correct opinions or intuition, which can be seen as gifts from the gods rather than acquired through learning. Socrates distinguishes between knowledge, which involves understanding the reasons behind one's beliefs, and correct opinion, which can lead to correct actions even without a full understanding.

In the end, Socrates and Meno agree that virtue cannot be easily defined or taught in a conventional way. They both recognize that the exploration of virtue's nature should precede any discussion of its teachability. Socrates suggests that Meno should use these insights to persuade others in Athens, as understanding and improving virtue would benefit the community.
