A balanced time perspective is one where an individual has moderate-to-high levels in the past-positive, present-hedonistic, and future dimensions (Zimbardo & Boyd, 2008).</warningtag><warningtag>Time balance means a person can think about the ‘good old times’ and then switch to leisurely activity and know when to work hard to ensure future success. Maciej Stolarski and Joanna Witowska from Warsaw University formulated the idea of </warningtag><warningtag>temporal </warningtag><a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/cognition"><warningtag>metacognition </warningtag></a><warningtag> </warningtag><warningtag>, which is defined as the ability to consciously </warningtag><a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/self-control"><warningtag>self-regulate </warningtag></a><warningtag>the focus on the past, present, or future (Stolarski & Witowska, 2017). They identified three dimensions of temporal metacognition, namely: (1) the capacity to control a maladaptive time perspective in a given situation and to switch to another (what all three above-mentioned characters lack), (2) the ability to reinterpret past events using present experiences (what the man left by his wife could not do), and (3) the ability to connect the three time dimensions to make conscious, purposeful decisions.</warningtag>

Past, Present, Future: Don’t Get Stuck in a Single Time Dimension

According to new research published in <a href="https://doi.org/10.1111/bjso.12447">The British Journal of Social Psychology </a>, frequency of bullshitting intended to impress or persuade others (i.e., persuasive bullshitting) predicts susceptibility to misleading misinformation, including pseudo-profound bullshit, scientific bullshit, and fake news. “We’ve all fallen victim to believing some sort of dumb bullshit at one point or another in our lives. Whether it’s astrology or the latest ridiculous diet or health fad that’s ‘based on science!’ . Some types of bullshit that we fall for are relatively harmless but might make us feel stupid.

Thus, it could be the case that individuals who frequently engage in bullshitting are also more likely to fall for bullshit. There are two types of bullshitting: 1) attempting to impress, persuade, or fit in with others by stretching or exaggerating the truth (i.e., persuasive bullshitting)

2) being evasive when direct answers could result in reputational harm for oneself or others (i.e., evasive bullshitting). “

Littrell and colleagues recruited a total of 826 participants from Canada and the United States. Study 1 explored the extent to which bullshitting frequency was associated with pseudo-profound bullshit, scientific bullshit, and fake news, with each task including a measure of receptivity to relevant non-bullshit (e.g., genuinely profound statements, scientific information, actual news headlines).Study 2 more closely examined the extent to which bullshitting frequency was associated with bullshit receptivity, specifically pseudo-profound bullshit. It included measures of cognitive ability.

Lastly, Study 3 experimentally tested whether the observed association was the product of higher frequency persuasive bullshitters being insensitive to the differences in statements that sound profound and those that actually are profound. One group of participants were instructed to rate items on the bullshit receptivity scale based on how profound they sound , while ignoring how profound they believe the items actually are . The other group received the reverse instructions and were prompted to rate items based on how profound they actually are , while ignoring how profound they sound .

New study suggests you can bullshit some bullshitters

Before you're able to do anything about repetitive thoughts, you have to notice when they're happening. "Awareness is key," Dr. Aragam says. Examine whether the thought is moving you forward to leaving you stuck. Dr. Aragam suggests a few questions: "Is this serving me? Am I going to have an answer to this right now? What else can I do?" If you can't solve whatever you're thinking about right now, it's time to try a different tactic.

1. Notice the thoughts—and ask whether they're helping

Taking your mind off of the thought your brain is chewing on can bring a lot of relief. Dr. Magavi is a fan of puzzles in particular. "Puzzles can improve mindfulness and overall mood states," she says. "They can divert attention from painful rumination. Some studies indicate that puzzles can minimize brain cell damage and facilitate the growth of new neurons."Other activities might be checking in with friends and family, playing a sport, or exercising. Re-engaging in hobbies and interests that bring you joy can be effective, too.

2. Distract yourself

On TikTok, one psychiatrist has been posting "<a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@psychiachick/video/6923179480383065349?is_copy_url=1&is_from_webapp=v1">why you feel like shit in a pandemic </a>" videos and touched on the topic of repetitive thoughts. She suggested that a lack of novel stimuli—aka, seeing the same four walls, the same people, the same news stories again and again—can often be a ripe environment for repetitive thoughts, particularly if you're already prone to them.That's partly because we have so many fewer natural cues to change our patterns of thinking, Dr. Aragam says. Imagine a day pre-pandemic, where you maybe would have run into a neighbor or colleague in the middle of the day.

3. Do something you haven't done before

You've heard them before—and they apply here, too. When in doubt, get your sleep in order, eat well, and stay in touch with friends and family. Sleep is especially important. "When you're more rested, you have more control over your brain, and it's less likely to fall into the traps of overthinking, rumination, and worry.

4. Focus on healthy habits

What helped was trying to put the argument in my brain aside and focusing on something else. Start doing a creativity workbook, taking day trips to nearby towns. Having something fresh to explore.

Qualia are the subjective or qualitative properties of experiences. What it feels like, experientially, to see a red rose is different from what it feels like to see a yellow rose. Likewise for hearing a musical note played by a piano and hearing the same musical note played by a tuba. The qualia of these experiences are what give each of them its characteristic “feel” and also what distinguish them from one another. Qualia have traditionally been thought to be intrinsic qualities of experience.

Not As Smart As You Think

We like to think of ourselves as highly evolved and rational beings who think, feel, and act in ways that are intentional and reasonable. We hold this perception because it enables us to believe that we are “captains” of our lives and help us believe that we are in control of the choices we make and the direction our lives go. Who Has Control Of This Ship? 

Our Unconscious Mind The unconscious part of our minds is outside of our conscious awareness and is not easily accessible, meaning we can’t just conjure its content up like we can a seemingly forgotten telephone number (that resides in our <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/unconscious">subconscious </a>). This lack of ready availability makes our unconscious minds both mystifying (“<a href="http://chan%2C%20david%2C%20%22why%20people%20self-sabotage%2C%20and%20how%20to%20stop%20it%22%20%282019%29.%20research%20collection%20school%20of%20social%20sciences.%20paper%203079.%20https//ink.library.smu.edu.sg/soss_research/3079">Why do I keep doing things that hurt me </a>?”) and seemingly beyond our control, often leading to a sense of frustration and helplessness.The unconscious mind consists of three forces that often lead us down unhealthy roads.

First, despite our being supposedly so evolved compared to the rest of the animal kingdom with our cerebral cortex and, more importantly, our pre-frontal cortex, we frequently still <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4451179/">respond to the world as animals </a>driven by our primitive instincts, emotions, and reactions (e.g., survival instinct, <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/fear">fear </a>, and fight or flight, respectively). Not surprising given that these unconscious forces have been driving all living beings since we climbed out of the primordial muck around 3.5 billion years ago. In contrast, our cerebral cortex has only been around for about 250,000 years. L

Second, carrying around emotional baggage from our <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/child-development">childhood </a>is, for most of us, a part of the human condition. Early in our lives, we develop certain ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving that help protect us from some perceived threat and survive in hostile environs of varying degrees. For example, to feel safe around an angry parent, we learned to be passive and accommodating. To be rewarded by a demanding parent, <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/313684716_Child_Perfectionism_and_its_Relationship_with_Personality_Excessive_Parental_Demands_Depressive_Symptoms_and_Experience_of_Positive_Emotions">we became a perfectionist </a>. These protective mechanisms were highly functional when we were young. Unfortunately, in adulthood, what had been functional can become dysfunctional

Lastly, the more that primitive forces and emotional baggage direct our lives, the more those characteristic ways of acting on and reacting to our world become habitual and the first response we make, even when it may not be appropriate or healthy. For example, when we perceive someone judging us, we react with defensiveness and <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/anger">anger </a>because that’s the way we’ve always reacted, even though such a reaction usually does more harm than good.

The PFC allows us to engage in what is commonly referred to as “<a href="https://developingchild.harvard.edu/science/key-concepts/executive-function/">executive functioning </a>,” which involves the ability to guide our behavior in more intentional ways by weighing pros and cons, calculating risk and rewards, deciding what is best for us in the present, and, at an important level, empowering our conscious mind to override our unconscious mind.

At the same time, I don’t want to completely discredit any value that our unconscious minds may have; Mr. Spock made poor decisions despite his strong sense of what is logical. The unconscious mind isn’t driven solely by unhealthy forces. On the contrary, whether you want to call it your gut, <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/intuition">intuition </a>, spirit, or what have you, we all have the capacity to allow our non-linear and emotional sense to guide us in making healthy choices and steering the direction we take in our lives. This intuitive part of us can draw on information that may not be readily available to our conscious mind,
