The foundational principle of Essen’s extraordinary memory is that he connects ideas.The abstract is considered more difficult to remember than the concrete, but by connecting the abstract to more easily pictured ideas, one’s memory can improve.

Make Connections

Images have been proven to stick exceptionally well to the brain.Essen’s utilized images to improve his memory on several occasions, including:<ul><li>Memorizing the numbers of Pi: Essen formed his own “number alphabet” that he correlated to images such as cake.</li><li>Memorizing the top ten largest countries: Essen goes down the body, starting at the head, and connects parts of it to the countries as he goes. He envisions his head as nesting dolls, his ears as maple leaves, his eyes as hamburgers, and so forth.</li></ul>

Utilize Images

Try to make your connections memorable and unusual! Your image should be uniquely tied to what you’re attempting to memorize.The more vivid and interesting of an image, the better.

Be Bizarre

Connections should be personal and flow at least somewhat effortlessly. Don’t force a certain connection to stick if a better alternative exists for you.

Do What Makes Sense To YOU

Connect connections to each other to form an even stronger “memory path”. These can also represent connections/reactions between related information.

Layer Connections

Regular practice, especially with these techniques, and further strengthen neural pathways in the brain and forge stronger memories.

​What do a cake, a ghost and a helmet have in common? Well, they represent the first nine decimals of pi. At least, that’s according to Jonas von Essen, student at Chalmers University of Technology and two-time world champion in memory. 

Six years ago, Jonas von Essen had no idea that he would become a two-time world champion in memory. He even says that he had quite a bad memory. Thanks to a book on memory techniques he found at the library, Jonas started to get interested in the subject and only three months later, he won the Swedish championship in memory. One year after that he became world champion.

Meet the two-time world champion in memory

Get the most challenging or unappealing task dealt with as early as possible, so that you won’t have to worry about it later.

Eat The Frog 

Count backwards from five when you’re trying to convince yourself to do something, and when you reach 1, go ahead and do that thing.

5-4-3-2-1 Rule

Remove digital and physical distractions by turning off notifications, clearing away distracting items, and cleaning your area.

Remove Distractions 

Focus on an activity for a set amount of time (usually 25 minutes) and then follow it up with a break (usually five minutes).Keep doing this (with reason) until the task is done.

Pomodoro Technique 

Do a small, specific thing every time you participate in a certain activity. Try to truly believe that doing that small thing will help you with the task.E.g. chewing a flavor of gum to study, putting on a certain pair of glasses before work, etc.Over a period of time (usually a month or two), this will become a habit that makes it easier to perform a task.

Placebo Effect/Association

Take a moment to stare at something for sixty seconds.In most cases, it will cause you to instinctively want to do something else, even the task you had been avoiding.

Stare At Something

Have the supplies you associate with a task in open view. This will make you feel more inclined to use them and partake in the task.

Have What You Need Out

Set a certain time of the day to tackle tasks and stick to it every day.This somewhat goes hand-in-hand with the “eat the frog“ method.

Establish A Routine

Break down the task into smaller steps, the easier and simpler, the better.

Track what you have to do and when you have to do it on a list.If you have multiple tasks, organize them by priority using a number, letter, or color system and see if you can remove any.

Keep A To-Do List

If you’ve been working for a good portion of the day and exhaustion is the reason you’re procrastinating, try to take a break and recharge.

Visualize how great it would feel to overcome the task and imagine that you’ve already done what you were aiming to do.Alternatively, visualize the consequences of failing to perform the task and use them as a motivator to keep moving forward.

Work with others to increase motivation and finish the task more quickly.

Collaborate With Others

Try to bribe yourself with rewards to do the task. These rewards could be a break, a snack, an event, etc.

Identify why you’re procrastinating and what is making the task unappealing.Try to negate these reasons if possible.

Work extends to fill the time allotted to it, so consider reducing the amount of time you have to do something.This can help you finish tasks more quickly and make it easier to start due to the sense of urgency.

Parkinson’s Law

Make sure the goal or task fits the S.M.A.R.T. criteria.<ul><li>Specific (what exactly are you going to do?)</li><li>Measureable (how will you measure and determine success?)</li><li>Achievable (is it possible?)</li><li>Relevant (why are you doing it and how will it affect you?)</li><li>Time-Bound (when should it be done?)</li></ul>

Set S.M.A.R.T. Goals

Try to make it fun by connecting it to something else you enjoy.E.g. listening to music while going for a run.

Make It Fun

Make sure to only focus on one task at once. Multitasking is the equivalent to switching between tabs—do only that and you will most likely get little to nothing done.The failure to make as much progress can also result in more procrastination, as tasks can pile up and be a source of further stress and avoidance.

Avoid Multitasking 

Try committing to something with a friend who will hold you accountable.E.g. giving your friend fifty dollars that you can only get back if you go to the gym three times that week.You can also do this online by posting about your commitment on social media, but make sure not to confuse telling others about it for progress.

Pre-Commit

If something can be done in two minutes, do it immediately.If it’ll take longer to complete, just work on it for two minutes to get started and build momentum.

Create a to-do list for your distractions to allow you to better focus on the task at hand.E.g. put “check email” on your distraction to-do list if a non-urgent reminder to do so comes up while you’re working.

How to Stop Procrastinating

The two techniques for journaling for clarity involve essentially writing down every thought that comes to mind.<ol><li>Sit down in one session and write out the thoughts you’re having.</li><li>Keep a notebook and jot down every new thought that comes to mind. This is considered more challenging.</li></ol>

Journaling For Clarity

Use these three techniques to break out of an obsessive or fixated state. E.g. not being able to stop worrying.<ol><li>Imagine six impossible things. E.g. a camel and his best friend skating over an exploding pigeon.</li><li>Write down how you can make someone else happy right now. Aim for about 5-10 bullet points.</li><li>Write down something in your immediate environment that you never noticed before. Aim for about 5-10 bullet points.</li></ol>

Journaling For Breaking Your Mindset

Here are the five most important questions you should be answering as you reflect on your day:<ol><li>What excited me?</li><li>What drained me of energy?</li><li>What did I learn?</li><li>What are 10 things I’m grateful for?</li><li>How do I keep moving forward?</li></ol>Aim for about 5-10 bullet points for each question.

Journaling For Daily Reflections

This form of journaling is for people trying to really improve themselves and their lives.<ul><li>Divide the page into three columns, and label the first “actions,” the second “the worst version of myself,” and the third “the best version of myself.”</li><li>At the end of the day, write down everything you did in the actions column.</li><li>Decide whether each action would be closer to something the best or worst version of yourself would do.</li><li>Score yourself, which each action belonging to either column giving it a point. E.g. drinking a beer=1 point for the worst version column.</li></ul>

Journaling For Habits & Lifestyle Audit

Answering these four questions can help you overcome cognitive distortions and see issues in new ways. Aim for about half a page for each one.<ol><li> What happened objectively?</li><li>What did I make it mean?</li><li>How would I comfort a friend I loved if this happened to them?</li><li>How is this the best thing that has ever happened to me?</li></ol>

Journaling For When Bad Things Happen

This form of journaling can help you identify and overcome your anxiety.<ul><li>Divide the page into three columns, and label the first “fears,” the second “fixes,” and the third “the outcome that I would bet on.”</li><li>In the first column, break your anxiety down into its true fears/causes.</li><li>In the second column, write down a basic strategy to overcome each fear.</li><li>In the third column, write down the objective most possible outcome.</li></ul>

Journaling For Anxieties

Fill a page with bullet points that list all of your obligations and everything you want to do.Audit your list by asking these questions:<ol><li>What is non-negotiable?</li><li>What is exciting?</li><li>What on my list, if done, would make everything else easier?</li><li>What of these, if the opportunity was taken away from me, would I fight to get back?</li><li>What 20% of the activities are producing 80% of the results?</li></ol>

Journaling For Your To Do List & Direction

<ol><li>Clearly define the decision/problem.</li><li>What are the options? Aim for about 10, unless the problem is pretty binary.</li><li>If I had to make this decision in 60 seconds, what would I choose? Start a timer and choose an option.</li><li>Could I live with this outcome? Yes or no, why a few points as to why.</li><li>What would this look like if it were easy?</li></ol>

Journaling For Decision Making

Your life is like an x, y graph, in the sense that a single point is not enough to establish a clear direction.Answering these questions should help with finding more of the points on your “graph.”<ol><li>What did I want five years ago? Use bullet points and separate this into categories.</li><li>What do I want now?</li><li>What do I think I’ll want in five years time?</li><li>If I knew I couldn’t fail, what would I do?</li></ol>

The Journalling Techniques that Changed My Life

Avoid sitting around waiting for an invitation and be willing to initiate social interactions and events. If you want to spend time or do something with someone, go for it.If you don’t ever initiate social interactions, others may believe that you aren’t interested in their company.

Always Assume Initiative

If you’re interested in forming deeper relationships with others, you have to get over the fear of voicing opinions or being controversial.If you’re always agreeable and afraid to speak honestly about things you care about, you will be perceived as nice, but almost no one will know who you really are.Being afraid to talk about your passions and opinions or to ask questions about things you’re curious about is essentially concealing your identity from others and making you difficult to trust or bond with.

Honesty Is The Antidote

”You’ll be liked by everyone but loved by no one.”

When you consistently express your honest opinions, you’re bound to come across people who completely disagree and run the other way.That’s a good thing, because you can tell pretty quickly who will be sticking around, and those are usually the people who you can bond with.It’s better to opt for honest communication and a quick rejection than dishonest communication and a gradual rejection.

Rejection Is A Tool 

Gradual rejection is when the rejection occurs later on in a relationship and is usually between two people are incompatible, but afraid of communicating honestly.They begin to get frustrated and bitter over their fundamental differences that were never sorted out at the beginning, which often results in a lot more pain.E.g. two people getting into a relationship, only to breakup later down the line because of their differences.

Gradual Rejection 

A lot of people have a difficult time finding others who share their hobbies, interests, and opinions.This is because they tend to only look for people in the most general of places.To increase your chances of finding others you can connect with, go to places or events where people who share your interests and values are.E.g. going to church if you’re a Christian, or joining a sports team if you’re passionate about a sport.

Self-control

High-value men understand the importance of health and prioritize it over making money.They exercise, eat healthy, and care for their mental health without making excuses or neglecting their health.

The "HIGH VALUE" Code (10 Rules Men Should NEVER Break)

The effects of good habits are often only present after a period of consistency.However, many of us find ourselves in a cycle that goes somewhat like this:The Dopamine Spike - We become extremely motivated and feel compelled to start. However, this doesn’t do anything to bring consistency to our goals.The Failure - The initial motivation begins to subside with time and eventually failure takes place, bringing shame and frustration.

There are several reasons for why we fail to achieve consistency:<ul><li>The Binge Fallacy.</li><li>A Negative Self-Image.</li><li>Obsession.</li><li>Lack of responsibility.</li></ul>

This is extremely common when people are attempting to break bad habits.This can eventually result in a complete loss of self-control related to the habit, as well as shame and hopelessness.To overcome this, establish a stronger reason for why you are doing something by imagining the future if you never achieved it. You can write it down to reread every time you need a boost of motivation.Learn from your past mistakes, and try to grow from them.

The Binge Fallacy

“You act like the person you conceive yourself to be.”

If you subconsciously don’t believe in yourself, then you will unconsciously find yourself making decisions that align with that view and sabotage your progress.This can be combatted through the process of visualization.

A Negative Self-Image

Envision the best case scenario and imagine how it would feel if you reached the goal or if you had a month, a year, five years, etc. of the consistency you desire. Write it down and take the time to really dwell on it.After doing that, sit and visualize as if it already happened and you finally achieved your goal, allowing yourself to bask in those emotions.

Visualization 

Visualizing, especially repeatedly, will cause your subconscious to think as if what you want has already happened, which will cause you to carry out more conscious and subconscious actions towards consistency. As you make progress, it will begin to further reinforce your self-image and compound to the point where you, to an extent, reinvent yourself.

The Effects Of Visualization 

Another reason you could be struggling is that you keep obsessing over your streak of consistency, which constantly reminds you of what you’re trying to avoid and may push your mind towards it even more.Try to avoid continuously dwelling on the past, and work on being more present in the current moment.

Obsession

The harsh truth: You have to accept that everything that happens in your life is 100% your responsibility. You can’t control everything that happens to you, but you can control your reaction.Learn to acknowledge your mistakes and not tolerate excuses.

Why You Can't Stay Consistent (Escape The Cycle)

Set a challenge for yourself to do one small thing for a month that connects to, but isn’t as extreme as, a greater goal.E.g. quitting sugar when you’re trying to eat healthier, or going for a short run every day when you’re trying to run a marathon.Once you prove to yourself that you can take the steps to achieve a goal, reaching the goal itself becomes much easier.

While I was reflecting on the steps I took to reach previous goals, I came to realize that I had often been doing something that greatly improved my consistency.

Recently, I’ve come across an interesting idea that seems to have the potential to greatly boost one’s enjoyment of life, as well as their productivity: gamification.Gamification is the process of combining game elements with scenarios outside of an actual game and it can be applied to almost anything, including your daily life.

Gamification 

<ul><li>There must be a clear objective.</li><li>There must be a clear way of measuring success.</li><li>There must be rewards and a sense of progression.</li><li>There must be some variety and unpredictability.</li><li>There should be immediate feedback.</li><li>There has to be a plan for failure that remains compassionate to the player.</li><li>There must be clear rules and conditions.</li><li>It must be a game you want to play.</li></ul>

The Principles Of Gamification 

<ul><li>Determine the objectives. What are you working towards? Why?</li><li>Determine a clear way of reaching success. What do you have to do to reach the objective? Can it be divided into several small steps?</li><li>Determine the victory conditions. How will you measure your success? How soon can you get this feedback?</li><li>Determine the rewards and milestones. What will I get when I succeed? What milestones are there?</li><li>Determine the rules and conditions of the game. What happens if I do X? Are there any exceptions?</li><li>Determine a plan for the event of failure. Are there any penalties or punishments? How will I continue?</li></ul>

How To Gamify Your Life

<ul><li>Make a “playbook” that details key players, current quests, bosses, countermoves, status conditions, and/or progression.</li><li>Experiment with reward systems. Is the loot predetermined or determined at random through a dice roll? Is it points that can be exchanged?</li><li>Try to make rewards connect in some way to the objective. E.g. a gym membership if you’re trying to work out.</li><li>Ensure the rewards don’t negate the goal. E.g. treating yourself to some cake when you’re trying to eat less sugar.</li><li>Keep the game simple and don’t over-design.</li><li>Set milestones, unlockables, achievements, points, and/or skill levels.</li></ul>

Tips And Optional Ideas

<ul><li>Define clear boundaries. Your entire life doesn’t have to and shouldn’t be a game.</li><li>Set yourself up to win. You don’t get extra points for playing life in hardcore mode.</li><li>Include boosters that are limited to certain conditions or connected to a core activity.</li><li>Design mini-games, special modes, and time-based challenges for additional variety.</li><li>Create a dashboard of current progress, a character sheet of sorts, or game map.</li><li>Set aside “playtime” every day and make sure you’re playing the game you want to be playing.</li><li>Gamify certain metrics. E.g. have a water bar if you’re trying to drink more water, etc.</li></ul>

Remember that gamifying life is supposed to help you better get things done. Make sure you don’t get so lost in designing that you never take action.Have a great day, and I hope this inspired you to take the action to use your time.

We often find ourselves with nothing to say during conversations, which often leads nowhere and results in a lack of connection. However, by improving our conversational abilities, it’s possible to combat that.As such, here are the three stages of having a good conversation:<ol><li>The Approach.</li><li>The Small Talk.</li><li>The Deeper Conversation.</li></ol>

The Three Stages

Many people struggle to get past this stage due to a fear of rejection; however, through introspection and confronting and coming to terms with the socializing problems in your past, you can overcome that.Journaling is especially useful, and it can be helpful to ask yourself, “why do I feel like this person will not like me or care about what I have to say?” and “does my social anxiety come from a bad childhood experience or recently?”.Once you let the past go, you can start approaching people again and relinquish your past self’s control over you.
