Net Protein Balance (skeletal muscle mass, for our purposes here) = Muscle Protein Synthesis – Muscle Protein Breakdown.
You have to eat right to build your muscle tissue back up after destroying it in the gym. That's muscle building 101. Under normal conditions, skeletal muscle has a high turnover rate – in the range of 1-2% of muscle proteins are being synthesized and broken down daily.
Both training and nutrient intake are potent activators of protein synthesis, although nutrient-induced increases are short-lived.
