We associate things based on similarities of being alike to other.

Example, when someone shows you a picture of your best friend, you naturally think of her because the picture resembles her.

We associate things that occur to each other in space and time.

Example, if you saw a tree and in that tree you saw a next, this may lead you to think of bird, because they are spatially contiguous.
