The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) came into being after the merger of the National Data Bank (NDB) and the Federal Office of Statistics (FOS).
Initially, FOS was the major government agency tasked with collecting and analyzing statistical data in the country, while NDB was another agency focused on the storage and maintenance of statistical data in the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
This merger highlights the actualization of part of the Statistical Master Plan (SMP), a programme document put forward by the Government of Nigeria.
