The NBS is responsible for the coordination of the National Statistical System (NSS), incorporating all statistical operations across all levels of government — federal, state, and local.

It collects and disseminates official statistics from Federal Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDA), State Statistical Agencies (SSAs), and Local Government Councils (LGCs).

The NBS serves as the apex body for the collection and dissemination of official statistics, including data on population, demography, economic events, agriculture, and national resources.

Its establishment as the leading authority for information collection and dissemination ensures coherence in the system, which is essential for governance and planning

Nigeria practices a federal system consisting of 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs).

The statistical efforts at each level are coordinated by the NBS.

Ministries or government departments have Directors of Statistics, and similarly, each state has its own Director of Statistics, along with Heads of Statistics units at the LGA level, ensuring widespread data collection.

The Statistics Act of 2007, passed by the parliament, provides a legal framework for the NBS, covering its activities and mandate.

This Act was passed to support the collection, management, and dissemination of national statistics.

State offices for the NBS are located in all 36 states of Nigeria, plus the Federal Capital Territory.

Zonal offices are located in the six geopolitical zones:

Southeast – Enugu State

Southsouth – Calabar

Southwest – Ibadan

Northwest – Kaduna

Northeast – Maiduguri

Northcentral – Jos

The NBS board consists of 15 members: six political members from the six different geopolitical zones, who are:

Appointed by the President

Approved and

Confirmed by the Senate.

There are also nine institutional members, either operative or represented by their delegates:

• The Minister of the National Planning Commission or their Representative

• The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria or their Representative

• The Minister of Finance or their Representative

• The Minister of Agriculture or their Representative

• The Minister of Education or their Representative

• The Group Managing Director of NNPC or their Representative

• The President of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) or their Representative

• The President of the Nigerian Statistical Association

• The Statistician General and Chief Executive of the NBS, who serves as the Secretary.
• The Chairman of the Board is appointed by the President on the recommendation of the Minister of the National Planning Commission (NPC).
