Introducing Charlotte Mason

Introducing Charlotte Mason

Charlotte Mason was a British educator. She believed education was "an atmosphere, a discipline, a life". She believed education was about finding out who we are and how we fit into the world.

Charlotte Mason believed children are not black slates waiting to be filled with information. She thought children themselves should be exposed first-hand to ideas and knowledge instead of the teacher acting as a middle man.

  • Dictation is done from passages from literature books.
  • Memorisation is used to give children material to "chew" on, so Charlotte Masons' students memorised passages from the Bible and poetry.

Short lessons and habit training

  • A Charlotte Mason schedule consists of short lessons - 10 or 20 minutes per subject for the younger children but longer for older children. The emphasis is on excellent execution and focused attention.
  • Habit training. Children are taught the meaning of the motto "I Am, I Can, I Ought, I Will." Competition with other children is discouraged as each child should do his best in everything.
