4. Always do your best

When you always do your best, you take action. Doing your best is taking action because you love it, not because you're expecting a reward.

If you take action without expecting reward, you will find that you enjoy every action you do.

If we like what we do, if we always do our best, then we really enjoying life. We are having fun, we don't get bored, we don't have frustrations.

MORE IDEAS FROM The Four Agreements

3. Don't make assumptions

Most of us make the big assumption that others think how we think and see the world how we do. This sets up expectations inside of us that are inevitably broken. So it's much better to ask a question than assume anything.

We make all sorts of assumptions because we don't have the courage to ask questions.

2. Don't take anything personally

You are never responsible for the actions of others; you are only responsible for you. When you truly understand this, and refuse to take things personally, you can hardly be hurt by the careless comments or actions of others.

There is huge amount of freedom comes to you when you take nothing personally. You become immune to black magicians, and no spell can affect you regardless of how strong it may be.

1. Be wise with your words

Your word is pure magic; and misuse of your word is black magic.

The biggest sin we make with our Word is to judge. And the most common target of this judgement is... ourselves!. Whenever we judge ourselves for anything, we are heading further down the path towards unhappiness

So be careful about your Word i.e. your inner dialogue. They may be invisible, but they are seeds that will take root and grow into your life.

The First Agreement: Be Impeccable With Your Word

“The human is the only animal on earth that pays a thousand times for the same mistake.”

Our beliefs are conditioned by punishment. Whenever we do something wrong, we punish ourselves so as to reinforce the mistake. This is true for all animals of this world. However, we humans take it one step further and punish ourselves over and over again every time we are reminded of the mistake. This is extremely unfair to us, as it causes suffering and decreases our happiness.

1. The Law of Pure Potentiality

Every human beings have eternal power for endless possibilities. We all have a pure spirit that is capable of fulfilling every dream that we have. Our ego is our self-image but our spirit has no such labels attached to it. There are universal intelligence that guides us even if we feel like we are struggling and hard.

To gain access to this law, Deepak Chopra suggests us to:

  • Mediate daily, simply observe,
  • observe silence, say nothing,
  • practise non-judgement,
  • spend time in nature.

In the Inner Citadel, Hadot applies to Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations his characteristic interpretative approach: treating ancient philosophy as a “way of life” in particular one which provides its students with “spiritual exercises” to enable them to make progress towards wisdom and treating ancient philosophical texts with attention to the “forms of discourse” or constraints of genre, tradition, and audience that affected their production.
