Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental disorder that consists of persistent and intrusive thoughts, ideas, or urges (obsessions) which may include repetitive behaviors or mental acts aimed at preventing or reducing anxiety or distress (compulsions).
In the past, OCD was considered an anxiety disorder, but after much research, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders fifth edition (DSM-5) now has it in its own category.
