Why the hype

Researches believe most athletic gold medals, world championships, significant progress in the arts, and major scientific breakthroughs come from a flow state.

It's called "flow" because every action and decision leads seamlessly, fluidly to the next.

MORE IDEAS FROM The Science of Peak Human Performance

- DR. ARNE DIETRICH

"It's an efficiency exchange. We're trading energy usually used for higher cognitive functions, for heightened attention and awareness."

Why decision-making is easier in flow state

According to John Hopkins neuroscientist Charles Lamb, when in peak performance or flow state...when you are "in the zone" -

  • The self-monitoring part of our brain is deactivated (as shown by fMRI).
  • It means, no more second-guessing or interference from our voice of doubt.
  • And so, risk-taking becomes less frightening and we act without hesitation.
  • All this lets us flow at a faster pace.

Runner's high decoded

In the runner's high or "flow" state where we feel best, perform best & are on a roll with rapid-fire problem-solving:

  • Any brain structure that would hamper the heightened awareness & attention state, is shut off.
  • Brain waves hover between day-dreaming and the radical idea-combining state just befor falling asleep.
  • The 5 chemicals that go into upping attention, pattern recognition, lateral thinking, muscle reaction time...are all pleasure-inducing and performance enhancing brain chemicals.

FLOW State

As Steven Kotler describes the 'The FLOW State' as to where we feel our best and perform our best.

Where we feel Selflessness, Timelessness, Effortlessness, and Richness (of information). It is the only time when our brain releases all five pleasure chemicals at once and we forget about everything and become one with the work.

Flow state increases our productivity by 500% and creativity by 400%.

Hypnosis

It has been around for hundreds of years, and yet it is a sidelined subject, not fully understood even by the brightest minds.

  • It refers to a trance-like state in which there is imagination, extreme suggestibility and relaxation. It is a sort of daydream that makes good use of the power of suggestion.

  • The word Hypnosis has its roots in ancient Greece and Egypt, and after the Greek God ‘Hypnos’ who was the personification of sleep.

Describing "flow"

Flow is a state of mind when we are so absorbed in an activity that we lose all track of time and effort.

Flow happens when we are doing an activity that embraces our skillset with several challenges we are able to overcome only by stretching ourselves. And we feel good when we conquer each challenge.
