Different Points = Different Wants

Whenever Ramit Sethi, author of I Will Teach You To Be Rich, asked people what they wanted from a ”dream job”, one of the most striking things about their answers was how different they were. Some people wanted to step back into their career full time after a hiatus. Some wanted to be able to spend more time with young kids. Some wanted to pursue meaningful work in another industry. All Dream Jobs. All completely different!

Dream Job: To Each His Own

But, then, as well as now, if these people ask for help with how to reach their Dream Jobs, the common answers are all the same:“Just follow your passion!”“Just be thankful you have a job!”“Just do good work and you’ll be rewarded eventually.”(Have you noticed how so much bad advice starts with “just”?)Our career goals aren’t generic and one-size-fits-all. So why is all career advice generic and one-size-fits-all? Why are the tactics we use — like surfing job boards and shotgunning out resumes — so generic?

Career Advice: To All The Same

We all go through different phases in each of our careers. Some of us are early in our careers, looking to grow and soak up knowledge. Sometimes we want to downshift, or prioritize family. And sometimes we want to reinvent ourselves entirely.Ramit Sethi calls these different phases “Career Seasons.” Just like the seasons throughout the year, they’re natural. They change over time. And you may cycle through them more than once.“Your Season has profound implications for the jobs you look for and even the way you search for your job.

Introducing “Career Seasons”

Most of us started in this Season early in our careers. Some of us are still in it! In the Growth Season, we’re motivated by moving up the career ladder and making more money. We’re willing to put the time in and we don’t mind working hard. Here’s a quote from someone that instantly tells you that they’re in the Growth Season. “I feel like I’m falling behind compared to my peers. They’re moving on to senior management titles, director titles. I’m seeing everyone else have upgraded titles, so I say, ‘I want it too.’”

The “Growth” Season

People in the Lifestyle Season still value their work and career, but they also have other equally important goals. Here’s a classic quote describing the Lifestyle Season:“I want to spend as much time with my kids as I can. I do not want to work 60 hours a week anymore.” Notice these phrases, which instantly tip us off to the Lifestyle Season: “Flexibility” (or “flexible schedule”), “downshift,” or “family.” You may think about work/life balance if you’re going into a Lifestyle Season.

The “Lifestyle” Season

Reinvention Season describes people who want to totally reimagine and change the course of their career, usually by switching industries. Imagine a lawyer who wants to leave her firm and join a start-up. Here’s a quote from someone in Reinvention Season: “I have 12 years of financial sales experience, but I feel pigeonholed onto a sales track and don’t enjoy the work. I’ve always wanted to transition to a computer science field, but have no formal experience.” You’ll hear typical phrases like “fresh start” to describe this Season.

The “Reinvention” Season

1. No Season is better than the others.No judgment against any Season — it’s your Season. You choose what’s right for you now. Think of the previous quotes. For some, one or more of them sounds terrible. For others, this is exactly where they are.That’s the point! The right Career Season sounds exactly right to you… and wrong to everyone else. .

A Few Notes About Seasons

2. We naturally move in and out of Career Seasons as we get older. Just like actual seasons. While it makes sense to want all of these things to happen simultaneously, some things are just more appropriate for certain Seasons. You can choose the right Season for you — but you can only pick one.For example, it’s very difficult to embrace the Growth Season and the Lifestyle Season at the same time. Think of what each one asks of you or what you ask of it. So, you can try, yes… but doing so makes it difficult to make any meaningful progress in either.

3. Finally, EVEN if you feel like you could be in multiple Seasons, you NEED to pick ONE. This is hard, especially for top performers who like to go above and beyond. But you will find that trying to do more than one at a time means not doing your best at either. (And Ramit Sethi knows he is repeating here, but he’s repeating this because it’s so important.

Ramit Sethi argues that, just like there are seasons in our life, there are - and must be - seasons in our career and that without understanding “our” Career Season, we can’t and won’t find a job that’s perfectly made for us.

So use (or keep revising) the information to feed it to the long-term memory.If you study to remember you will forget, but if you study to understand you will remember.

How to Remember All you Read in 5 Simple Steps

Active Recall is the process of using your brain to retrieve some information that you cannot remember at the moment.How does it work?Whenever you go through your notes, don't just read them or re-write them. Ask yourself questions about the topic first and without looking at the notes, try to recollect everything about it. When you are done, take a look at the notes and recognize what you missed. In this way, you actively involve your brain and test yourself on whether you know the topic well. This is the most effective way to study and is better than just re-reading the notes.

Active Recall

Spaced Repetition means revising something after regular intervals. If you read something and do not revise it afterward, you will surely forget it. To remember things for a longer duration you should keep revising the topics as follows-:After you finish a topic, revise it just after reading it. Then revise it in the gaps of 1 day, 7 days, 16 days and 35 days. This will help you to retain information for a longer time. Also, when you are revising use the active recall method, which will boost your memory skills even more!

Spaced Repetition

The Feynman Technique works on your understanding of things. If you can't explain it in simple language, you don't understand it yourself. How to apply it to studies? It is simple, explain it to your friends, your pet, your wall, etc. OR, Write down the topic on paper and write everything that you know of it. Now examine all that you missed.Explain it as you are explaining to a child, in the simplest language. It will also help you to actively recall things.Think like a child, what all questions he/she could ask and how would you explain them! This will make you conceptually stronger!

Feynman Technique

In one of my ideas written earlier, I have explained why you should not memorize and rather understand, using Pareto's Principle. In learning something new, it's obvious that you will have to utilize your energy. If you utilize it in memorizing, you will only be able to answer factual or formula-based questions, not conceptual ones.But if you understand what you read, first, there is no need to memorize it and second, all the facts and formulas will already be understood, which makes your work easier.You can check your understanding by using the Feynman Technique!<a href="https://deepstash.com/idea/187793/achieve-more-by-doing-less">Pareto's Principle</a>

Understand, Don't Memorize

Whatever you read, try to relate it with your real life. It makes it easier to remember. For example, What happens when you keep a cold water bottle outside at room temperature, the answer is simple, we observe droplets of water forming on the surface of the bottle. Was there a need to memorize this? NO. Because it keeps happening in everyday life and you know it. That is how knowing real-life application could help you remember things, because -<ol><li>It creates curiosity and develops an interest.</li><li>It could answer your question "WHY ARE WE STUDYING THIS", which makes the subject more meaningful.</li></ol>

It is one of the largest religious and mysterious monuments in the world. It was transformed to Buddhist temple from Hindu temple at end of 12th century. It is as impressive as it is vast, making it a brilliant example of Khmer architecture. It is admired for the grandeur and harmony of the architecture although it just combines two basic plans of Khmer temple architecture: the temple mountain and the later galleried temple.

1. Angkor Wat – Cambodia

The present standing building was constructed originally as a church between 532 and 537 on the orders of the Byzantine Emperor; therefore, it is also a singular testimony to the grandeur and the genius of Byzantine architecture. It is the former Greek Orthodox Christian patriarchal cathedral, later an Ottoman imperial mosque and now a museum in Istanbul, Turkey.

2. Hagia Sophia – Istanbul

The Forbidden City is the world’s largest collection of well-preserved medieval wooden structures; every detail reflects features of traditional Chinese architecture and rich Chinese culture. It was constructed from 1406 and opened for public in 1420. The complex consists of 980 buildings and covers 72 hectares. Such structures give us an idea about the great architecture of the world.

3. Forbidden City – Beijing, China

It is a French château (a large French country house or castle, often giving its name to wine made in its neighbourhood) spanning the River Cher. The current château was built in 1514–1522 on the foundations of an old mill and was later extended to span the river. The bridge over the river was built in 1556-1559, on the basic designs of French Renaissance architecture.

4. Château de Chenonceau – Chenonceaux, France

It is originally known as the Fuller Building. It is a triangular 22-story, 285-foot (87 m) tall steel-framed landmark building. It was completed in 1902 and has been called one of the world’s most iconic skyscrapers of that time, being the tallest. As with numerous other wedge-shaped buildings in the neighbourhood, the name “Flatiron” derives from its resemblance to a cast-iron clothes iron. The Flatiron Building was designated a New York City landmark in 1966.

The Gateway Arch is a 630-foot monument and it is the world’s tallest arch.  It is Clad in stainless steel and built in the form of a weighted catenary arch. There was a design competition for this piece of work for 3 years 1945-48, though it was complete in 1965 and officially dedicated to “the American people.

6. The Gateway Arch – St. Louis, Missouri, USA

It is a masterpiece designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built in 1935. It is a famous modern architecture example, a house which is a fusion of the artificial and the natural in perfect harmony. This house is set above a natural waterfall and water is actually flowing through it. It was declared “best all-time work of American architecture” by the American Institute of Architects in the year 1991.

7. Kauffman Residence or Falling water–Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Burj al Arab is 321 meters high and it represents one of the wonders of contemporary engineering in today’s world, completed in 1999. It is built on an artificial island 280 meters away from the coast. It has a helipad near the roof at a height of 210 m (689 ft) above ground making it is one of the most luxurious and the fourth tallest hotel in the world.

8. Burj al Arab – Dubai

Metropol Parasol is a wooden structure, some 90 feet high and nearly 500 feet long. The structure consists of six parasols (A parasol is an object like an umbrella that provides shade from the sun) in the form of giant mushrooms constructed in four levels. The wood used in the structure is birch, imported from Finland, because of its straight qualities and it was completed in 2011.

9. Metropol Parasol – Spain

It is a nature park, created in 2012. Gardens by the Bay is Singapore’s plans to transform its “Garden City” to a “City in a Garden”, with the main aim of raising the quality of life by enhancing greenery all around and flora in the city. The park consists of three waterfront gardens: Bay South Garden, Bay East Garden and Bay Central Garden. Its flower Dome is the largest glass greenhouse in the world. It can be considered as one of top 10 coolest buildings in the world.
