“Some things are within our power, while others are not,” wrote Epictetus, the Greek Stoic, in a line we’d be justified in dismissing as obvious, if it weren’t for the fact that we ignore its ramifications every day, and suffer as a result. In every situation, there are things we can control and things we can’t, and struggling to control the latter is a recipe for anxiety and stress. “Partial control”, like the kind we have, say, over our 3 year-old’s behaviour, can be broken down into two: we usually have total control over what we say or do; and none, technically, over how he or she reacts.

An Ancient Philosophical Idea: “The Dichotomy Of Control”

It’s an idea that’s echoed widely elsewhere, for example in the Serenity Prayer, associated with Alcoholics Anonymous, and in an observation with Buddhist origins: if a problem can be fixed, there’s no need to worry about it; and if it can’t be fixed, well, why bother worrying?

Which is fine so far as it goes: it surely is true that if we could manage never to fret about things we can’t affect, then life would proceed serenely. But it strikes as a major weakness of Stoicism – at least in its rediscovered, newly fashionable form – to assume that seeing the truth in an insight like this can bring peace of mind by itself. Among the many things we can’t control, it turns out, are our own emotions.

An Idea With An If-Then Hypothesis

What Sigmund Freud and his successors brought to psychology was the understanding that conscious thought might be only a tiny sliver of what’s going on in the mind as a whole. So if a global pandemic triggers our particular anxieties around death, or illness, or job security – anxieties formed over decades, and embedded in our unconscious – it’s radically insufficient to try to think ourselves into realising they’re futile. If pointlessness caused things to vanish, Pop Sockets that people stick on the backs of their phones wouldn’t exist. Yet they do.

That is why the dichotomy of control is best approached as a preliminary tool. We (can) use it to distinguish what we can control from what we can’t – but peace of mind arrives only when we begin taking action in the realm of the former, the can-do. As the saying goes, we can’t think ourselves into new ways of acting, but we can act ourselves into new ways of thinking.

It’s often less a matter of realising how little control we have than how much. We can’t stop the worldwide spread of a disease, but we can do plenty to stop it spreading through us. We can’t choose to make it through today’s to-do list, but we can choose to spend the next three hours diligently attacking it. And so on.

There’s a deep kind of freedom to be found here, even in the presence of severe external constraints. Our goals shift from external ones, about imposing certain changes on the world, to internal ones, about how we plan to act upon the world. These are objectives we can aim at wholeheartedly, fully expecting to accomplish – secure in the knowledge that they don’t require the cooperation of forces whose assistance we’re in no position to compel.

Scarcity is an influential driving force which can heavily influence how and why customers purchase a product. Us humans are driven to have as much as we can, and seeing something scarce mentally increases the demand we have for it, even if it has no use for us.It comes in 4 flavours:<ul><li>Quantity</li><li>Time</li><li>Access</li><li>Rarity</li></ul>

Scarcity 

By constraining quantity, we emphasize it's limited availability.Artificial constraints break user trust and opinion about companies, so using this as a tactic requires strategy.Another point to note that quantity scarcity should not induce stress. Scarcity should be used for luxury items, and not for commodities which will lead to stressed customers which impacts us in the long run.We can instead focus on the craft. "30 other people are looking at this item". This drives a narrative where a user feels the product is scarce due to it's demand, not it's actual supply.

Make your scarcity valuable, not stressful

When time's ticking down, we take mental shortcuts. We're all used to seeing the "Offer ends in 2 hours, get your x% off now!" branding on most sites. This comes off as artificial most times, as the message communicated conveys that the user is lucky to have the offer, which ends up becoming cliche.Highlighting time restrictions when they're made to ensure quality of service leads to higher stickiness and loyalty. An example of where this works would be in seasonal products, or one-off goods.

Motivate customers by emphasizing the limited time remaining in which to act.

Restricting access to consumers is counter-intuitive. Why would you want a customer to not have access to a feature?But imagine a system where a user gets a feature unlocked for being in the xth percentile. This drives up the value for a feature, which in turn increases scarcity. Doing this selectively for certain feature/customer segments is the key. Over-doing this would straight up tank a product.

Access

The concept of Scarcity lies at the core of economics, and greatly influences perceptions of value, status and our competitive desire to attain certain items over others.Unfortunately, it's also one of the more poorly-applied concepts out there, along with Defaults and Loss Aversion.Far better an approach is to use it creatively to highlight your unique value.

Question Your Assumptions If you have a negative view of someone, ask yourself what it’s based on. Did you formulate your view based on facts? Do you have all the relevant information or do you need to inquire further about the situation? Make an effort to explore all the possible sources of information before coming to a conclusion. If this isn’t possible, consider leaving your opinion neutral or open-ended.

Recognize Your Biases Be aware of your own biases and cultural standards. Recognize that your own view of life is limited based on your own experiences.Remember that other people with different cultural, social, professional, religious, or ethnic backgrounds may not share the same views. Try to put yourself in their shoes and see things from their perspective.

Be Empathetic Practice empathy and compassion for people, even if they look, think, dress, speak, or act differently than you do.Think about how you have felt when someone formed an opinion of you that wasn’t accurate. Did you feel hurt, angry, upset, ashamed, embarrassed, or disappointed? Let those feelings guide you toward being more compassionate toward others.

Expand Your Horizons Expose yourself to new ideas and perspectives. Meet new people and talk to them about their lives. Experiment with different activities and try new foods. Read lots of books and watch informative content. Travel as much as you are able to.

Practice PositivityWith practice, you can develop a more positive mindset. If you catch yourself thinking something negative about something or someone, challenge yourself to see something positive in the situation instead.You can also take a few minutes every night to list the good things that happened that day and be thankful for all the things you’re grateful for.You can choose to do this exercise by yourself in your mind. Or you can note it down in a journal or practice it with a loved one.
