<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Present information in a way that highlights benefits and positive outcomes rather than focusing on negatives or potential losses. </li><li class="ql-align-justify">This is because humans are generally more driven by the prospect of gain than by the fear of loss.</li></ul>Practical example of re-framing:<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Negative Framing: If we don't complete this project on time, we could lose the client.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Positive Framing:  Completing this project on time will strengthen our relationship with the client and could lead to more business opportunities.</li></ul>

Positive Framing of Asks from Others to Prompt for Action

<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">When trying to motivate action from others, inducing fear is more likely to lead to inaction. </li><li class="ql-align-justify">Fear can trigger the fight-or-flight response, which often results in freezing or fleeing rather than taking constructive action - thus resulting in paralysis in decision-making situations.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">And when fear dominates in decision making situations, we tend to focus more on negative information and hence are reluctant to make changes or take risks. </li><li class="ql-align-justify">Therefor, fear works better as persuasion when we want to cause inaction, that is when the person you're influencing is already anxious, worried or stressed.</li></ul>

Fear leads to Inaction

<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Contrary to popular belief, data has a limited capacity to change beliefs. It's because our brains did not evolve to rely on numbers and spreadsheets for making conclusions.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Example: A climate change advocate presenting charts and statistics showing rising global temperatures. Individuals skeptical of climate change may dismiss the data due to confirmation bias. Instead, one can share personal stories of people affected by climate change.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Data works when individuals have a neutral stance. However, in arguments where opposing views are present, data often has little impact.</li></ul>

Limited Persuasive Power of Data in Arguments

<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">A cognitive phenomenon where people tend to come up with new reasons to support their existing beliefs when presented with contradicting data!</li><li>Scenario: One friend has a strong belief in a specific political ideology.</li><li>Contradictory Evidence: The other friend presents data and arguments that challenge this ideology.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Outcome: The friend with the original belief becomes more entrenched in their political views, leading to heated debates and potential strain on the friendship</li></ul>

The Backfire Effect

<ol><li>Cognitive Dissonance: Confronted with challenging information, individuals experience psychological discomfort and may reject new data, reinforcing their original beliefs.</li><li>Confirmation Bias: People favor information that confirms their preexisting beliefs and ignore contradictory evidence, strengthening their viewpoints.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Social Influence: Beliefs tied to social identity and group membership can lead to resistance to change, as altering beliefs may threaten social standing and relationships.</li></ol>

Cognitive Biases Contributing to the Backfire Effect

<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Active Listening: Understand the psychological reasons behind someone's beliefs to create a more conducive environment for change.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Present Information Gradually: Provide information incrementally rather than overwhelming the individual with too much contradictory evidence at once.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Use Emotional Appeals: Appeal to the emotions rather than relying heavily on logical arguments. Emotional connections can make the information more relatable and less threatening.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Build Trust: Establish trust and credibility. People are more likely to consider information from sources they trust.</li></ul>

How to overcome the Backfire Effect?

<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Research has found that people with higher IQ, when presented with data that contradicts their views, they are more likely to find flaws in the data or interpret it in a way that supports their beliefs.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Individuals with strong math and analytical skills are more prone to the Backfire Effect.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">The advanced skills are sometimes used to discredit conflicting data rather than seeking truth!</li></ul>

Intelligent people have a higher tendency to rationalize

<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">By emphasizing shared beliefs and motivations (instead of finding flaws with their viewpoints), you increase the likelihood that the other party will listen and be receptive to your message. </li><li class="ql-align-justify">For example, when promoting vaccination, campaigns often highlight the shared goal of protecting community health. By focusing on the common ground of wanting to keep loved ones safe, these campaigns can overcome hesitancy and encourage vaccination (rather than the approach of trying to disprove the link between vaccination and autism using research data).</li></ul>

Establishing common ground is a powerful technique in persuasion

<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">The British government was trying to get people to pay taxes on time. Their normal approach was to send a letter to people who didn't pay on time with a message along the lines of it's really important to pay your taxes. This approach wasn't very effective in changing people's behaviour.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">And so then they changed the message and added the sentence 9 out of 10 people in Britain pay their taxes on time. And that one sentence enhanced compliance by 15%!</li><li class="ql-align-justify">So simply highlighting the positive actions of others, especially when it's a majority, is a simple, inexpensive way to change behavior. </li></ul>

Highlighting Positive Actions and Social Incentives to Influence Behaviour

<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">A hospital study showed that the hand hygiene compliance among medical staff was alarmingly low, with only 10% of staff washing their hands before and after patient interactions.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Traditional methods, like emphasizing the importance of hand hygiene, proved ineffective. </li><li class="ql-align-justify">To address this, the hospital installed cameras above patient room doors and monitored compliance 24/7. </li><li class="ql-align-justify">However, surveillance alone didn't improve the rates.</li></ul>

Immediate Rewards and Group Conformity - Hospital Case Study

<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Next, electronic boards were installed above each door, providing real-time feedback. </li><li class="ql-align-justify">The boards displayed immediate positive messages like "Well done!" when staff washed their hands and showed daily and weekly compliance stats for the hospital.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Impact: Compliance rose to 90% almost instantly and remained high.</li></ul>So why does this intervention work so well?<ol><li class="ql-align-justify">Immediate Rewards: Positive feedback generated immediate reward signals in the brain, encouraging repeated behavior.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Group Conformity: The display of compliance rates meant that each person was now accountable and nobody wanted to be an outlier.</li></ol>

<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Fear is often associated with situations where individuals feel they lack control (like when flying on airplanes), leading to heightened anxiety. </li><li class="ql-align-justify">On the other hand, agency or the sense of control reduces anxiety levels. The ability to make choices and exercise agency is experienced as a reward by the brain.</li></ul>How can we use this in practice?<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">If you are a manager, instead of saying here's a project, you have to do this, consult with employees about their preferences and availability and then provide them with choices -  we have these two projects, which one would you rather work on.</li></ul>

Connection between Fear and Agency in the Brain

<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Allowing children to make choices, such as selecting their clothes or meals, promotes a sense of autonomy.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Children tend to enjoy activities more when they have the opportunity to make decisions themselves - this further fosters a sense of responsibility and self-confidence.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Even if it's like getting them to eat salads, encourage them to make their own salad - when people make things themselves, they like it better (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IKEA_effect">Ikea Effect</a>). </li></ul>

3 Elements of Storytelling

<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">A story must begin with a relatable experience - a situation or a problem that your audience can relate to.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">You clarify what the main character of your story is trying to accomplish - Here's where we were. Here's where we were trying to get. And people make the connection to, oh, yeah, I've been in that similar situation.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">When people see themselves in the story, they are more likely to be engaged and emotionally invested.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Showing vulnerability can build trust and make the storyteller more relatable.</li></ul>

1. Relatable Experience

<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Next, you need to introduce some conflict. Something has to get in the way of that goal or else the story is pretty boring.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">This is what makes people pay attention because they start wondering - what's going to happen? How are we going to get to the end of this?﻿ </li></ul>

2. Conflict

<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Finally, you would describe how the conflict was resolved. Or alternatively, what happened because of which couldn't be resolved. And what can we learn from that?</li><li>Closure: The resolution should tie up the story’s loose ends and provide a satisfying conclusion.</li><li>Lesson or Insight: The resolution should offer a takeaway or moral that the audience can apply to their own lives.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Transformation: Show how the characters changed as a result of overcoming the conflict.</li></ul>

3. Resolution

Research shows that there are 3 distinct neurochemicals released in the brain corresponding to relatability, conflict and resolution.1. Oxytocin (trust hormone): When individuals can relate to the characters and situations in a story, it triggers an oxytocin response, leading to increased levels of trust towards the storyteller.

2. Cortisol (stress hormone): Introducing conflict and risk into a story increases cortisol levels in listeners' brains, making them more attentive. This explains why people remember information better when presented in a story format.3. Dopamine (pleasure hormone): A good resolution to a story triggers an increase in dopamine, offering a sense of satisfaction similar to completing a task or achieving a goal.

What is Perspective Taking?

Scenario-1: You are having a conversation with a friend who is going through a difficult time. Instead of immediately offering advice, you can practice active listening - take a moment to think about the problem from their perspective. Acknowledge their emotions by using phrases like, "I can see that you’re really upset".Scenario-2: You are working on a team project with colleagues from diverse cultural backgrounds.Instead of assuming that your way of doing things is the only correct way, you actively seek to understand and respect the cultural perspectives of your teammates.

<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">In marketing and sales, it is crucial to focus on the benefits that appeal to customers' core human drives rather than the features of a product.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Features are facts or attributes of a product (e.g., This candle is made from 100% soy wax). </li><li class="ql-align-justify">Benefits are the positive outcomes or results that customers experience from using the product (e.g., This candle creates a clean, eco-friendly ambiance in your home).</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Customers are primarily motivated by benefits, as they address core human desires and needs.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Many entrepreneurs confuse the two or outline only the features in their product pitch.</li></ul>

Convey Product Benefits instead of Product Features

A famous example of features vs. benefits is that of Steve Jobs when he launched the iPod. Instead of stating that it has “5GB storage”, he described the iPod as “a device to carry 1,000 songs in your pocket”

Think along the lines of answering the following questions:</li><li class="ql-align-justify">What: Lay out the facts and describing the situation objectively. What happened? What was the idea?</li><li>So What: Analyze the significance of the situation. Why is this important? What impact did this have?</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Now What: Decide on the next steps. What will you do differently next time? How will you apply the insights?</li></ul>

Being Concise: Utilize "What, So What, Now What" Structure

<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Focus on what is relevant to your audience and start with what is most important to them.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Avoid the tendency to overexplain or show off your knowledge by building the clock when all people need is the time.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Simplify language by avoiding jargon.</li></ul>

Share practical steps you want them to take after receiving your message.</li></ol>This is applicable for any form of communication—be it a speech, presentation, email, or meeting.

3 Key Components of Effective Communication

Imagine you are giving a presentation on the importance of cybersecurity in your organization.<ol><li>Information: Present statistics on recent cyber-attacks, the potential risks, and the current state of your organization’s cybersecurity measures.</li><li>Emotion: Share a compelling story about a competitor that suffered a significant data breach and the emotional and financial toll it took on them.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Action: Conclude by outlining specific steps your team can take to enhance cybersecurity, such as adopting new protocols or attending a training session.</li></ol>

Children need Autonomy, Competence, and Relatedness to flourish

<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Sadly, lots of youngsters aren’t getting autonomy, competence or relatedness things in their offline lives. </li><li class="ql-align-justify">At school, they are stifled by rules. At home, they bear the burden of their parents’ expectations and risk being labeled failures if they don’t do well at school which fail to stimulate their imaginations. </li><li class="ql-align-justify">The online world becomes the only space they have to roam freely and interact with their friends independently. </li></ul>

Why children turn to the online world?

<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Technology isn't inherently bad. It can be used to facilitate free play, which is crucial for children's development.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">The author's daughter uses online tools like Zoom to play games with friends, allowing for social interaction and unstructured play even when physically apart.</li></ul>

1. Leverage Technology for Free Play

<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Differentiate between content that promotes creation and content that leads to passive consumption.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Encourage children to use technology for activities that build skills and knowledge, such as educational games or creative projects, rather than just consuming media.</li></ul>

2. Filter for Creation rather than Consumption

<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Unstructured play is essential for children's social and cognitive development.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Schedule regular playdates or free play sessions where children can interact with peers without the oversight of adults. This helps them learn social skills and develop independence.</li></ul>

3. Promote Unstructured Play

<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Children learn by observing their parents. Model the behavior you want to see in your children.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Show your children how you manage distractions by setting your own timers and sticking to your schedules. This consistency helps reinforce the importance of being indistractable.</li></ul>

4. Model Indistractable Behavior

<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Traction is the opposite of Distraction.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Help children understand the importance of scheduling and making time for activities.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Involve children in setting rules and parameters for screen time and other activities to foster a sense of autonomy and responsibility.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Instead of imposing strict limits, discuss and agree on reasonable screen time rules together. This collaborative approach helps children understand and respect the rules.</li></ul>

5. Make Time for Traction Together

<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">A pact is a self-imposed rule that includes a consequence for breaking it.</li><li>Effort Pacts: Make distractions harder to access.: Keeping the phone in another room while studying.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Price Pacts: Attach a monetary or meaningful consequence.: If the child breaks the pact, they lose a privilege or have to do an extra chore.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Write Down the Pact: Document the pact and the consequences of breaking it.</li></ul>

<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Liminal moments are the transitions between tasks throughout your day. </li><li class="ql-align-justify">These brief periods can be particularly susceptible to distractions because they create a sense of uncertainty and discomfort, prompting you to seek quick relief through distractions.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">For instance, checking your phone "just for a second" can end up in never ending scrolling on social media.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">The Ten-Minute Rule:  If you feel the urge to engage in a distracting activity, wait ten minutes before giving in. This technique helps you "surf the urge," allowing the desire to pass without acting on it. Or use apps like <a href="https://one-sec.app/">One Sec</a>.</li></ul>

Be Aware of Liminal Moments

<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Effective planning involves time-boxing, allocating specific time slots in the weekly schedule for different tasks.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Emails, with their variable rewards, are habit-forming distractions - organizing emails into 'For Today' and 'For This Week' folders helps in prioritizing and managing responses efficiently.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">At office, implement a policy requiring detailed agendas before meetings reduces unnecessary gatherings.</li></ul>
