Like all animals, we know what we need. Nourishment, safety, sex. Our needs are limited. Instinctual. Natural. And in today’s world – almost guaranteed.Our wants, on the other hand, are more complex. Whimsical. Time-consuming. We create them by choosing from a menu of possibilities that changes along with our environment. And boy, has our environment changed. For millennia, we foraged in the wild. Today, we’re being suffocated by abundance.This abundance makes it fair to expect individual desires within a modern tribe to be totally random. Unique, even.But they aren’t.

Our Needs And Wants

Everywhere you look, you’ll see groups of people who want the same things. The newest iPhone. Gucci handbags. Yeezys. Expensive degrees. And lately ­– pixelated JPEGS.Like a bunch of neighbouring metronomes that spontaneously synchronize, our desires coalesce with those of our social group. We desire what other humans desire. In other words, our desires are mimetic.

Keeping Up With The Joneses

Firstly, our wants are confusing. It is impossible to know what to want when there’s an endless, ever-changing list to pick from, with no reference point provided by evolution.
Secondly, we are wired to play status games. High status had evolutionary advantages in our time as hunter-gatherers – it gave us easier access to resources for survival and mates for reproduction.
Thirdly, we’re signalling machines. By imitating the desires of a person we look up to, we signal to others that we possess some of the qualities of that person

The Reasons For Our Mimetic Desires

Mimetic Desire is the reason we become like the people we spend time with or look up to. They shape what we choose to want, often unconsciously.  Since our time is limited, it pays to pay attention to our desires. Escaping them is a futile endeavour for those of us that aren’t monks. Reordering them is more realistic.So find desires that stand the test of time. Those that don’t result in zero-sum games where you compete with your peers. Those that aren’t in conflict with other desires. Find desires that can create a journey you will enjoy, for the destination is never guaranteed.

Depending on how we answer whether someone likes us or not, we will either take steps to deepen the friendship or make moves to withdraw to spare ourselves humiliation and embarrassment. We assume that the other person must settle this, and we can do nothing to shift the verdict. However, we fail to realise that we often don't know what we think of other people. What usually helps us decide what someone means to us is our sense of what we mean to them.

The possibility of friendship often hangs in the balance because both sides are quietly waiting for a sign of whether they are liked before they dare to show any enthusiasm.  Most of it depends on how we behave towards them. We have every opportunity to persuade them to see us in a positive light by showing them that we see them in a positive light.

How we can show charm:<ul><li>We can remember small things about the other person.</li><li>Show interest in what they have been up to</li><li>Laugh at their witty comments</li><li>Sympathise with them about their sorrows</li></ul> Once you have carried out this set of techniques, you have to be highly unlucky to talk to people who show no interest in a friendship.

Friendship cannot develop unless one side is willing to show they are ready to like when there is no evidence of being liked back. Whether or not the person likes us will depend on what we do, not on what we are by nature. They may initially look a little distracted and behave in an off-hand way, but if we keep showing them warmth and encouragement to help them overcome their self-suspicion, the barriers will eventually come down.

How to Stop Worrying Whether or Not They Like You

One of the best treatments for anxiety, stress and inflammation is regular and appropriate exercise. Exercise increases not only your physical health but also your mental health. It is better than any other medication because you don’t build up resistance as you would to medicine. Even if you are on medication, exercise will be beneficial.

It can be really hard to eat enough protein to build muscle. People may think they are eating enough protein, but when they start to track their intake, they realise that they don't eat enough protein consistently throughout the day. Track your protein intake. If you find you have not consumed enough, throw in some shakes.

There are three big lifts: deadline, squat, bench press. If you are a beginner, run through the lifts first. Ensure to improve your technique to identify sticking points before you increase the weight.   Don’t get stuck in a routine. Instead, switch programs regularly. When you are training for a competition, visualise the competition, then practice the lifts in the order you will perform them.

How To Get Stronger In The Big 3 Lifts

When you have knee pain, it is almost always because of the ankles or the hips. Work on your mobility. Ensure to do ankle and hip mobility exercises every day. If you cannot do a conventional squat, try split squat stance or Bulgarian squat.

When we think we have clear differences in lengths of limbs, it is often just tightness in the muscles. We then overcompensate to correct the perceived imbalances. To improve, do unilateral movements moving one arm and one leg. Start with the weaker side and let that side dictate how many reps you do on the stronger side.

During the off-season, you train heavy and hard. Do resistance training two days per week, one or two days per week of cardio exercise, and mobility on off days. During in-season training, do correctional exercise and your prescribed triathlon training.

That’s why political parties, instead of coming together to find solutions, whip their supporters into a frenzy of anger against the other side. Corporations are now getting in on the action too. They weaponise your outrage to sell their products, such as Gillette with their ill fated ad campaign and Nike using Colin Kaepernick to bring socially conscious consumers to their brand.

The mainstream media is by far the worst culprit, however, because without your attention they don’t have a business model. They have to make you keep clicking and tuning in, otherwise their advertising dollars dry up. That’s why everything is increasingly sensationalised and it’s no longer about reporting facts. A headline that makes you emotional causes you to click. The article gets you pissed off, which sends you to the comments section to argue with people. The topic trends on social media, which you’re of course taking part in.
