Instead of just sitting back and waiting for a scholarship or funding so you can travel to your dream country, use this time to develop your skills and experience further.  Honestly, there are many skills you can learn, ranging from tech related to non-tech-related; this will benefit you greatly.  PS: Don’t forget that when it comes to individual scholarships or travel abroad journeys, it evolves differently, mine took 3years.  So track your progress and be patient with your process.

Your probably wondering 🤓 Yes, I have a foundation, and I trust God to start up projects next year. Fast forward to July 2019, I become a mentee of Doc. I am sharing this story so you can learn what to do and not do. 🔰Start by following or sending a customized message to connect with them. 🔰Devote time to nurturing a mentor relationship. 🔰Engage with them by commenting on their post; they will naturally notice you. 🔰Look out for events they host and join. 🔰Be intentional about your growth. 🔰Remember your mentor is busy and doesn't want someone they will feed with all information, even the ones they can find on google. After you have engaged for a while, reach out with a clear message with your intent. However, I am sharing this because of thousands of messages asking how to start. This is the first part people miss out on, and I did for years. Not knowing the program you’re going for. Often, the thought of leaving makes you think anything can go. My mentor’s advice was to use my strength as an area for concentration because despite graduating as a communication student. Two years into my journey, I neglected my educational qualification and focused on using my volunteer experience to seek scholarships in other disciplines. Don’t make the same mistake, you skills, volunteer exposure, etc., should complement your educational qualification and enable you to tell an unmatchable story. Make Google your friend: While it’s okay to ask questions if you feel lost. Don’t ask questions you; can find online. You can type on google (Schools in the USA offering Masters/Ph.D in Chemistry 2023 or Communication Masters program in Canada, or Tuition waived public health program in USA 2022, etc..) Often, you will see different articles with the names of schools. Next: Have a document: to write the name of these schools. Aim to get enough; scholarship is a game of numbers. ● After collating names. ● Copy each name and place it on google search; the school’s official website will show up most, if not all, always ends with (.edu). Then, copy and save it in your doc. ● Click on the link, check the website, and locate the course catalog. ● Type and search for your course. ● Check the program requirements, and note them down on your document. ● Don’t forget to get the program coordinator’s email address. ● Go back and forth to each website if you need clarity. ● Start preparing your documents and request for those you don’t have (reference, transcript, etc.) ● Look for people that will review your SOP, CV, etc. ● Create rapport with scholars, so it’s easy to approach them. ● Set a deadline when you want to submit. Don’t forget the place of mentorship, preparation, and determination. Scholarship, like every other job, is time-demanding. Let me know if this post was impactful. Know how your degree fits the program requirements; this will help you craft a compelling application. Identify the areas you should emphasize and other experiences or certifications you should seek to strengthen your application. Choose a recommender who knows you well; typically, programs make it clear what kind of recommendation they are looking for (e.g., professional, academic, a combination of the two, etc.). Please choose people who can speak about your abilities and talents. Request all necessary documents like transcripts in advance; while some schools are okay with you scanning unofficial transcripts and sending official ones if you’re accepted, others want to see official transcripts at the time of application. Please don’t inflate your grade, even if you send an unofficial copy. Have a strong resume or CV that highlights your experiences. Use action-oriented sentences and phrases, and quantify your results with numbers and metrics. If you need assistance, look for those that can help. Be aware of the program deadline: Schools that offer funding have strict submission deadlines. Even if your late submission is considered, your admission will come without funding. Honestly, it makes all your hard work nothing! Find out if you must submit a separate funding application or if it is included with admission. How would you find out? Take a look at the school’s website, contact the graduate coordinator via email, or connect and speak with current or alumni. You probably already know this, but lying anywhere on your application is not a good idea. The potential consequences are not worth it. Finally, Pray and keep being a work in progress. While the thought of leaving (Japa) is probably the dream of every Nigerian youth because of the present apparent reasons, certain mistakes would hold you back. And honestly, I made all these mistakes. I would keep this as simple as possible and write follow-up content on potential pitfalls to avoid. 1. Not having a mentor early; is like closing your eyes and picturing yourself in your dream country without an international passport lolzz. For instance, my interest in travel started during my undergraduate studies. But I couldn’t figure out where or how to start. But my mentor changed everything in 2019. 2. Waiting for application seasons before preparing. What do you do? Create a spreadsheet or word doc. Start to check your desired programs, note down the requirements (SOP, references, GPA, application fees, etc.), contact person (Name and email), websites, and application open/close date, among others; this gives you a clear idea of your expectations. 3. No accountability partner or group: With constant life shifts, it’s easy to get carried away. So you need someone or a group to hold you accountable when you are backsliding. 4. Not Checking the school website: I realized last year that most information we want sits on the school website. You have to seek and find them patiently. However, it would help if you were sure what information you’re looking for, so you use the key terms to search, e.g. (funding, financial aid, etc.) 5. Not reaching out to your preferred school graduate coordinator to ask questions. Most coordinators, I believe, are approachable. Send them an email, and if you don’t get a reply, send a follow-up email. These are simple yet common mistakes I made.
