Two Ways of Thinking

Carol Dweck, the author of Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, identified two ways of thinking.

We either have a fixed mindset or a growth mindset. The people with the former believe that they are born with certain abilities and those are what determines their capacity in achieving success while the people with the latter believe that their abilities are built and developed over time.

The Growth Mindset in the Workforce

Your success in the workforce is heavily dependent on whether you are able to keep an open mind, have the capacity to hone your skills and develop new ones, and how you approach tasks whether they may be challenging or not.

It is largely determined by one's abilities to be able to learn from their experiences and expand their knowledge from both their successes and their failures.

Transitioning from a Fixed Mindset to a Growth Mindset
  1. Learn to acknowledge and embrace your mistakes. Stop blaming circumstances and take accountability for the consequences of your actions;
  2. Face the unfamiliar. Muster up the courage to do so and see it as a learning opportunity; and
  3. Don't be afraid to ask for help. No one comes with all the expertise. Like the saying says "The master was once a student."
